Re: [Gimp-developer] Sourceforge downloads

2015-05-30 Thread Sebastian Wahl
If we could clarify what is happening and if the GNOME foundation can
indeed help, this would be good.
Looking at the sidebar on the Summary page there is this notice:
Hey, this isn't a SourceForge project! Check out the SourceForge Open Source
 Mirror Directory for more information.
It also appears that the account the project page belongs to is sf-editor1,
and a lot of well known projects are listed on the user page:
http://sourceforge.net/u/sf-editor1/
I'm also noticing VLC on that list, which abandoned SF as well if memory serves
me right.

The box in the sidebar links to http://sourceforge.net/mirror/ and explains
that they are mirroring popular open-source projects which are not already on
SF or no longer maintained.
The last section claims they want to hear if you don't want your project
mirrored on our site and points to the email address:
communityt...@sourceforge.net
Then again, all they are saying is that they are willing to listen, not
necessarily that they will do anything about it...

I wasn't already subscribed to this mailing-list, so bear with me if I messed
up the addresses or missed some replies which were not yet shown on the archive
page.

Of course, they may not consider a request to CD the delivery of the

Over all that, let's not forget the wrapper installers. Which seem to
have been removed silently now - and are not being mentioned at all in
 their blog post.

The phrasing they use in the post is «Mirrored projects[those that they
take over] are sometimes used to deliver easy-to-decline third-party
offers,».

What should happen is this:
1. take back control of the http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-win/
project page,
2. decommission the project (remove files, text, documents, etc).

It looks like SourceForge is too desperate to monetize since they have lost
their edge to github.
There is no future to Sourceforge.

This makes it all the more important to update the Windows download page on
GIMP.org to provide easy download. I will submit patches this week based on
our previous discussions, now that I have all the text (thanks Michael). I
think providing easy access through our GIMP.org site will hasten SF to its
timely grave. Possibly without the need for litigation.

As I openned the profile for that page to check the list projects it said
GIMP for Windows: last upodated 4 minutes ago - and the downlaod file thre nw
feature today's date.

Maybe due to our contacts they have just changed the kind and nature
of the malware
shipped with the installer.

I agree, if it hadn't been because they unbeknown to us had updated the
installer, the links would be pointing to an old version anyway. I think it
is better to have broken links and force people do a quick google search,
than having users install old versions with fewer features and more bugs.

[Gimp-developer] Sourceforge downloads

2015-05-26 Thread Ofnuts

The Sourceforge gimp-win downloads are now pointing to a 730K downloader:

http://i.imgur.com/ImWKmHN.png

Should this site be closed down entirely (assuming it is still under the
control of someone related to Gimp development)? There are still plenty
of links pointing to it, and it would be better for them to be invalid
instead of pointing to this crap?

SourceForge has taken the gimp-win project control away from me
(apparently due to inactivity, although they haven't done anything
like that with a few other inactive projects I'm a member of), and so
far they haven't responded to the message I sent them to cease the
 distribution of the installer.

 Eek!

Wow. I'm seeing a few 2.8.14 downloads (a tar.bz2 and a .exe) in
there, from September of 2014, hence *after* we said we would not use
Sourceforge anymore and have all the installers on our servers (and
bittorrent). Are we saying that while taking over the account,
Sourceforge created its own archives of GIMP for Windows?

That is quite a nasty scenario- we have the former project host to
 have apropriated itself
of being the target of download links to actively distribute malware with
 GIMP brand.

I think that if some (not many) communication attempts go unresponded this is
 an
issue where we should tap on Gnome Foundation and check whether there
are legal resources we can lay hand on to get them to stop it

Yes if that is what I understand, this is clearly an impersonation of
the official GIMP team. The GPL license allows anyone to do forks of
GIMP, or do alternative packages. But that does not give them the
right to pretend to be the official upstream (which is clearly what is
happening). And if they install something else, they are also using
the brand name of GIMP to install other stuff (malwares? adware?),
which is clearly not acceptable either.

If we could clarify what is happening and if the GNOME foundation can
indeed help, this would be good.
