I mean that if you change style after given the effect you see no changes.
You have to re-select the selection with the desired selection/border style and
then
you can see any difference, but perhaps I am to prosaic in saying this ...

For the feather style, you do have an alpha layer when you make the
selection, don't you?

For the smooth style, use high values with a rectangular selection to see
the smooth (round) effect ...

#: src/menus/view/zoom.xml:161(para)

"This command zooms the image so that the selection fills the smallest "
"dimension of the image."

in

menus/view.po

I would have written:

"This command zooms the image such as all the selection is visible."

or

"This command zooms the image such as all the selection is visible"
"occupying the most part of the screen."

or

"This command zooms the image such as all the selection is visible"
"fitting all the screen."

but my English is not so good so I could be wrong of course.

The shades of gray will be calculated as

[Gimp-docs] unclear sentence

Hello Authors,
my humble opinion is that this sentence is a bit unclear:

src/filters/blur/linear-motion.xml:41(para)
msgid ""
"This filter creates a linear in a direction determined by the Angle option. The default direction is horizontal to the right (0.000 "
"degree)."

I would change it in:

"This filter creates a linear blur in a direction determined by the
Angle option. The default direction is horizontal to the right (0.000 "
"degree)."

Do you agree?

Hi Morgan and welcome aboard!

I'm the Italian translator of the manual, so please forgive my bad
English. The GIMP manual is written in docbook-xml, and converted by the
source code present in its repository in PDF and HTML. The strings are
automatically extracted by a series of very smart scripts and Makefiles
into .po files (see the gettext docs) for the use of us -translators-.
Translated strings are then riconverted into docbook by means of the same
scripts to obtain the different languages versions of the docs. The
mechanism is very smart. In this way translators can focus on the
translation and every small modification or update in the original source
text will automatically transmitted to the translations in the form of
marked strings to update/translate.

It is very important to understand the mechanism and keep it working to
permit to translators to work.

Docbook permits also to have "anchors" in the text that make the "context
help" through the pressing of the F1 key work inside GIMP.

Hope this help you clarify matter...

Sorry I was unclear, I meant the GIMP application, not the manual.

I was trying to update the translation of the manual when I realized that
the specific dialog window was completely untranslated, yet no strings
were untranslated or fuzzy in the app...

Presumably my fault but I have no clue on how to fix it...

I can describe how I do it myself (I'm a translator in Italian):

I compile and apply the freshly translated .po files to the program that
I compile from the ufficial git repository, then I take screenshots of
the translated dialogs, cut them to suit my needs (usually with GIMP
itself) and commit those translated images.

I know, it's a hard work, I have been doing it for more than fourteen

   ^

> Any feedback to whether this tarball is suitable for distro and/or

Here my 2 eurocents:

1) I compile it on a day-to-day basis and I do not see any problem. I keep a
compiled version here that i manually update from time to time...
(I'm going to update it today)

I think that a CI, connected to the git repo would be a very good idea.
Github has that feature "build-in", if it is difficoult to do with gitlab
why not create a mirror on github just for this feature?

2) it would be useful also to compile _all_ languages tar balls...

3) the site should report clearly the compilation time _on the web pages_

You mean when the site will be updated? I asked for years if it was
possible to create a simple timestamp to check the site update time/date
to see the results of a specific commit ... just be patient and your
commits will show up but unfortunately currently we cannot know exactly
when and if ...

How do you see it that it's not updated?

Most of all it is not encuraging ignoring us and our problem reports...

Who is responsible to the help compilation?

Can we, at least temporarly, cover for him?

How can we do? Do we need special permission on some Virtual Machine somewhere?

Devs? Is anyone here?

[Gimp-docs] clarification needed

2020-06-19 Thread Marco Ciampa via gimp-docs-list
Hi people,
GIMP, tool option dialog.

The button on the bottom right "Reset to default values SHIFT Reset all
tool options" ... Is there someone who can explain to me the function of
pressing of the Shift key during the press of those button?
What is the difference between with and without pressing SHIFT?

TIA

Hope you don't mind I rebounce it on the gimp-doc ml... it can be useful

Ok, if you go here,

http://gimp.linux.it/www/manual/2.10/html/en/

is it less old?

> Another thing: how do you use IRC. I don't know that.

First of all you need an irc client. There are many for Linux. I use
hexchat, try it. Then you have to select to the GIMPNet server
(irc.gimp.org) and go for #gimp #gimp-user and #gimp-web channels.

You can execute some commands with the GUI and all commands manually.

All commands on a IRC server are more or less the same:

/join #channelname

to join a channel

/quit

to quit

usually in the form:

/somecommand

search on web there are plenty of guides to do anything in irc.
IRC protocol is really the "father" of all on-line chats in use these days...

My experience is ... the few times I connect into irc, all people are
connected but nobody's speaking. It seems to me a place where people meet
after having arranged an appointment or so by any other means...

Email is persistent, irc is not. I can't see older messages. So, for me,
irc is like using the phone: without record and on the fly.

Not the right tool for bugs that lasts for months...

Am I wrong?

I do not know with which frequency the help is recompiled on the site.

I often asked the devs to put a timestamp on the website to show the last
compilation date.

Nobody put anything that I know of, I am sorry.

You can find the "Term of use" in the license. The other topic as
"processing of personal data" is as simple as that: the GIMP program does
not process any personal data of any kind I know of.

Both open source and proprietary code licences assume no responsability
on the inner working of the software. Check ANY software licence.

The program do not use any personal data and the only way to be really
sure for any software is checking the source code.

Proprietary software do not expose any source code so you have to trust
the word of corporations and so obviously one can never be sure.

Good luck with that!

Your colleagues / office are probably looking for someone/some company to
blame for if something goes south...

No offence but that's the corporation way.

But this is just my opinion on that.
This is not an official position of the GIMP DEV TEAM.

Best regards,

[Gimp-docs] possible mistake...

2021-10-19 Thread Marco Ciampa via gimp-docs-list
Hello devs,
to me this seems to be wrong:

#: src/using/variable-size-brush.xml:138(para)
msgid ""
"In the left column Action, click Increase "
"Brush Scale to highlight it, then click the OK button."

in GIMP I do not see any "Increase Brush Scale" but somethig like:
"tools-size-increase" ...

Am I looking in the wrong direction?

Then "make validate-it" gives you:

Source xml: ./src/gimp.xml
Source po : ./po/it/gimp.po

Ok. Can translators just copy the untranslated sentence into the msgstr

[Gimp-docs] suggested translation workflow

2022-07-04 Thread Marco Ciampa via gimp-docs-list
Hi devs,
I am here asking you for some advice for making my translator work more
productive.

Since there are 2 branches of the docs, that follow closely the gimp
development, main and current (actually master and gimp-2-10), to avoid
doing the same things twice, and for avoiding errors and incoherencies,
what do you suggest to update the translation first or only?
Master or gimp-2-10 branch?

PS: please forgive me I somebody asked that before! I might have forgotten that!
