[Gimp-user] new user

2009-03-29 Thread Ernst W. Winter
hello,

being new to Gimp I would like to ask how a few things work.

I try to cut a picture in half and then mirror it. So far I had

Thanks in advance.

The best advice I can give to a person who is new to GIMP is to read all
you can available through Help, then try to do what you want to do. If
then you are still stuck, tell us what you did and then we could have
some basis on which to help you.

Rectangle select tool (select half you want mirrored)
Copy
Paste (you probably left out this step)
Flip tool (horizontal or vertical) -- be sure the tool will flip
selection not layer or path
Move flipped half to the other side
Merge down

PS - there are LOTS of capabilities, so reading the manual is highly useful.
But some things are really pretty easy -- you kind of have to get the
hang of selecting the proper tool, setting it up the way you want it to
behave, and then using it to your heart's content :-)

[Gimp-user] new user question about gimp scripting vs. Imagemagick

2004-11-05 Thread yonosuenohito
Hi all,

I recently wrote a shell script using Imagemagick which goes through all my
backups and finds, identifies, thumbnails and catalogs all images found
there, even if the file names have no extensions. However, Imagemagick
handles some issues rather badly: when converting CMYK to RGB, it makes
terrible color distortions, flattening multiple layered PSD files usually
ends up in a mess, and very large files (like 30MB+) take very long to
convert.

Is it possible to make command line identification and conversion scripts
with GIMP that would be comparable, and would they perform better and faster
than using Imagemagick?

An expereienced response would save me a lot of time.

Thanks,

JM
