resynthesizer via gimp-plugin-registry worked for me.

Thanks for that suggestion. I'm also not an expert at most things relating to
computers so that rules me out of lots of things. Especially, I must add, that
I'm now aged 83 and unlikely to learn a lot more at my age.  In the project I am
doing I found that saving the edited files as .jpg  instead of .psd all seemed
OK.

I am only adding print statements to gimpfu.py so I can see what's going on.

As for _query() I discovered it is only called when registration is changed.

If you write a plug-in for the  menu for instance it requires two
PF_STRINGs as input parameters 1 and 2 and a PF_IMAGE as output parameter 1.

I wish to find out where in the code this is determined so I can see what
input/output parameters are required for each menu location.

It means I build new Gimp 2.9.x packages on a weekly basis, I hope.

You can install the gimp-plugin-registry package. It contains 
resynthesizer 2.0. AFAIK resynthesizer 2.0 from git is three years old.
The version resynthesizer 2.0 in the gimp-plugin-registry package should 
be same as in git.

sudo apt install gimp-plugin-registry
