The primary author of SGML, the language on which HTML was based, was
written by a lawyer (Dr. Charles Goldfarb).

HTML itself came from the SGML Starter Set via Anders Berglund to (now
Sir) Tim Berners-Lee at CERN. Neither Tim nor Robert Cailliau working
on the Web anf HTML at the start were (or are) lawyers.

Shlomi Fish has already responded to you on the GPL, although the FSF
spent a lot of time in consultations in developing GPL v3, and that
included significant input from laywers.

I think it was written by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Stallman who is
not a lawyer AFAIK, but it reflects the values of
https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html.en and of the
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_General_Public_License which they publish and
under which GIMP is covered. I can sell people a copy of the source code of
GPLed software possibly along with some binaries for as much as I want
(including for millions of USD) as long as I do not violate any other laws.
Some people may opt to buy FOSS on digital media, and it is perfectly legal
under such conditions.

You can hire a developer to forward port the old version of the plugin. The
sources are at https://www.gimp.org/source/ . Note that I am available for
commissions (see https://www.shlomifish.org/work/hire-me/ ) but you may

[Gimp-user] Can't copy and paste drop shadow

Could have done with more info, version of Gimp, type of image..

Nothing I can do about your perception of quality. The displacement and opacity
all depends on the values entered in the tool.

Then the quote "When I draw a box around it and copy paste ." There are two
options once the selection is made.

Edit -> Copy shortcut ctrl-c which copies whatever is on the layer

Edit -> Copy Visible shortcut shift-ctrl -c which does what it says.

If you have the subject on a transparent layer, no real need to make a
selection, just copy(or copy -visible) and paste the active layer.

Without more info, best guess, using Gimp 2.10 (although could be Gimp 2.8 for
the second case)

Gimp 2.10 has two drop shadow plugins.

The GEGL plugin applies the effect directly on the canvas. see screenshot 1 One
layer copy / paste it

The legacy (Gimp 2.8) plugin makes 2 layers see: screenshot 2 Either Layer ->
Merge down the two layers into one and copy/paste or use Copy Visible.

That gets you a 'floating selection' screenshot 3. Two options, anchor the
layer, which merges down or better, promote to a new layer Layer -> New Layer,
which will allow a bit of tweaking.
