[Gimp-user] Size photo so it will consistently print at a specific size

2019-06-27 Thread Scott Jacobs via gimp-user-list
Whenever I know I want to print a photo at a certain size, Ibring it into GIMP,
and re-export it immediately, changing thename to photoXXX_8x10.jpeg. (So as
not to accidentally killthe original file)I then do a rectangle select, and in
the Tool Options section, click on Fixed -- Aspect Ratio, and enter 8:10 (for
example) inthe box below.  I then click 'n' drag in the image. The boxI make
will be the right shape for the print (or I then go back andmake it 10x8,
'cause I got it in the wrong order...!).I release the left mouse button, and
then use the side and
corner buttons to enlarge the box, and click 'n' drag in the centerto drag the
box around.  Once the box contains all that I want toinclude in the photo, I
press Enter to 'finalize' the selection (clickinside the selection to get the
'handles' back to further modify thesize/position).Once you have a finalized
selection, the menu option Image->FitCanvas To Selection modifies the image
dimensions to match the newsize/shape of the image.  Export this, and you have
something thatwill exactly match the shape of the paper on which you want to
print.
(Sometimes I don't want to crop ANY of the image, and then I just makeone of
the dimensions LARGER than in the old image size, and just live with the fact
that there will be white borders on two sides of the image. You may need to
enlarge the canvas, and make a layer underneath your image, filled with white,
to do this.  You MIGHT choose,if your image is bordered with black, to fill
this layer with black instead.)

Note that here we are not concerned with the exact dimensions of the
print, merely the shape (aspect ratio) of the image, as the printing firm (my
cornerdrugstore's photo kiosk) is only concerned with matching the shape of
theimage with the shape of the paper.

Re: [Gimp-user] Help newbie with plugin dev guidance

I've experience writing code in Perl, C, on UNIX platforms. But new to GTK,

I want to write a plugin/app that does the following:

- Opens a GTK dialog that displays an MxN matrix of int values and a few buttons
to interact with those values.

Not much experience with GTK bit when I tried (PyGTK) it wasn't that hard.

- Reads data over serial from an Arduino sensor to populate that matrix with
measured values.

Not a problem.

- Once fully populated, allow the user to send the MxN matrix to a GIMP plugin
that processes it into an M*S x N*S (where S > 1) 8-bit grayscale image

You are already in the plugin.

that can
then be saved in a format that GIMP probably doesn't already support (that I
don't yet fully understand but do have access to code that reads/writes it).

Gimp supports most usual image formats. Is someone reinventing the
wheel? You can add file type handlers in Gimp, and in the worst case the
handler can save the image in a usual format and then run a converter on
the file.

- Run on Win/Mac/Linux if possible

That will be Python, then, if you want to avoid recompiling things for
all platforms.

If you can please point me to resources/tutorials for learning how to do
something like that, I would be grateful. I've already watched 2-3 YT videos on
plugin development with script-fu and am about to go check out the tutorials
link that I saw when I registered on the site.

The Gimp source code contains several Python plugins. The python
interface is documented here:

[Gimp-user] Size photo so it will consistently print at a specific size

2019-06-27 Thread SandyGranny
Hi there!

My friend and I are avid, rabid photographers. ;-) He is -far- more advanced
than I in using GIMP (GIMP 2.10.10 ~~ on Windows 10 machines) to edit photos
while I'm just learning. But independently we have a "problem" we can't seem to
resolve -- so I am VERY MUCH hoping You have the answer!

We want to size / save an edited photo so it specifically will fit (without any
further editing, cropping, or other manipulations) a frame size -- ie, so we can
save it as what would print as an 8-1/2 x 10 ...or as a 7-1/2 x 11-1/2 inch
size. Now, I'll copy his explanation -- and hope Hope HOPE you can please help
us??? Thank you SOOO Much!!!

His description of our problem:

" I need to be able to crop my photo with specific dimensions, ( 8x10 etc)
export it to thumb drive for photo store to print and frame. When I use
rectangle tool it’s a perfect square (wrong dimension).Once it’s a square and I
change to 8x10 it becomes a distorted photograph. I’m familiar with the image
scale process but the tool box on side of program confuses me. The fix ratio
etc. Why are there two places to change size? The Scale plus the tool box ratio
side? I’m missing a step or doing wrong sequence. I make sure I use inches and
also at least 300 DPI..When the photo store corrects to fit a frame much of
photo is lost including my signature at times. They all use PhotoShop or
Lightroom and unfamiliar with Gimp program. My photos are fine but I can’t crop
and scale to standard frame sizes for the print store. I found no Utube
tutorials for step by step to follow.

" I am totally baffled trying to save an image to specific size for printing at
a photo store. My imported photos into Gimp are 6000 x 4000 from camera (not
raw). I click on the rectangle tool which opens tools for ratios, fixed etc on
right side column of Gimp program. I change the pix numbers to inches such as
8.00 x 10.00 and hit fixed. The ratio I believe is at 1:1. Then I go into scale
and again change to inches and type the 8x10 again. After which I export as
.jpg. The two sizes I am most interested in are: 7.5 x 11.5 and the 8:00 x
10:00's. Watch all sorts of Gimp tutorials and found nothing that help with step
by step guide. In addition to this problem when I crop an image it's sizes are
uncommon for framing.. If anyone can guide me through this I would deeply
appreciate it."

I SO VERY MUCH HOPE YOU CAN HELP!!!

Thank you!!!

ps...the saved image is simply because a file is required to be able
to post this question---it is not 'the' photo driving us nuts, just a thing to
be able to post our question; again, thanks!!

This person is using a third-party DDS plugin (it is not "built in to
gimp") and that plugin appears to need updating.

This is about colour management probably, and whether you are using a
linear or gamma-corrected image.

2019-06-27 Thread Pierre L.
Hey,

I saw something similar... this one is about alpha channel, and .dds
export, a guy is showing :

from the forum message :
http://www.maniapark.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=211743#p211743

And I've tested to go back to Gimp 2.8 as said on his message, it's ok

May be it's the same problem for you ?
