I experienced the same issue with the GIMP program, and unfortunately, I didn't found a solution, and all my files were lost. The most valuable was my case study. Note however that it is sometimes compressed as *.xcf.gz ; *.xcf.bz2 ; *.xcf.xz ; etc. Anyway, you should be able to just copy over the files somehow and it will work.
