That's just what I do.

I have no idea whether you have to become officially "subscribed" to it -
via the Google Groups interface (I did) - but then you can just post a message
there via plain old SMTP and receive the ML's traffic into your mailbox.

And FWIW, you don't have to use a Google-hosted mail address for this.

Oh, and if you actually wanted to know whether you could start an ML thread by
posting without being subscribed, you could just try and we'll see whether you
mail will come through.

[git-users] Re: Meta: Gmane newsgroup bi-directionality

2021-09-14 Thread Philip Oakley
Thanks for the clarification. I guess it's a Google (groups) related issue.
The main Git list is organised via the kernel.org so probably has more
flexibility. Others may know more...

[git-users] Re: Meta: Gmane newsgroup bi-directionality

2021-09-14 Thread Daniel Fleischer
The "gmane.comp.version-control.git.user" is the NNTP broadcast of this
"git-users" group and I'm able to read it through NNTP. However the link is
one-directional, i.e. I can't send a message to the newsgroup having it
reach here. I know it's possible even with a google group because I did it
in another group.

https://lore.kernel.org/git/ is the technical mailing list, available as
NNTP on "gmane.comp.version-control.git" and it's indeed bi-directional.

If there are legal issue, no worries; I was just wondering why the link was
one-directional. Can one still participate just be sending an email to
"git-users@googlegroups.com" ?

[git-users] Re: Meta: Gmane newsgroup bi-directionality

2021-09-14 Thread Philip Oakley
Gmane's majordomo service for Git was taken off-line a few years ago
because of legal troubles at the gmane service (right to delete issues
IIRC).

I believe it is still available as an nntp service.

If you need to access old gmane based links to past Git List mailings then
use the https://lore.kernel.org/git/ (search for gmane) for that ability to
reference gmane threads. Also on
https://public-inbox.org/git/xmqqblrpfky5@gitster-ct.c.googlers.com/

Hope we are talking about the same list...
