I've put:
TARGETPLATFORM=i386-unknown-linux
and all is well. The install instructions don't mention you have to change this and it
wasn't clear (to me at least) from the comments in config.mk that this needed to be
changed.

Looks like you've managed to configure for mingwin. Are you by any chance
not running this compile under mingwin? Check your HDirect Makefile.
