Re: Little init problem :)

2006-07-14 Thread dooteo
Hi Fernando and Gora,

Fernando, did you translate your application to Basque (eu) language,
compile it (with msgfmt tool) and copied the output file
into /usr/share/locale/es/LC_MESSAGES directory? Or in 'eu/LC_MESSAGES'
dir?

If you walk in another way, can you explain us which steps did you do?

Best regards,

Dooteo

case, the application is showed in english.

Now we have hr.po, eu.po, ru.po and others... and I had a big

If it is only that application, look to see if your es_ES.gmo file
somehow got overwritten with the eu_XX.gmo file, though I am not
sure how that could have happened. If it happens to all applications,
your setup has somehow been misconfigured. Check the environment
 variables, $LC_ALL, $LANG, and $LANGUAGE.

Re: GPL: disclaimer and format

2006-07-14 Thread Clytie Siddall

On 12/07/2006, at 12:11 AM, Jason D. Clinton wrote:

If I recall correctly -- while GPL translations are helpful -- the GNU
does not allow them to be considered official. Therefore, the only
document with any legal weight is the official English version.

You are correct.

GNU stipulate on their page for unofficial translations [1] that they
will support unofficial translations of their licences, by listing
them and linking to them, providing their supplied disclaimer is
prefaced to each translation.

The disclaimer prevents any reader of a translated licence from
assuming that the translation is a legal document. Readers of other
languages may not otherwise be aware that only the English version
has been assessed and certified as a legal document (the costs of
doing this for other languages are not practical: professional
translators + liability insurance + legal services).

So, my question remains: could we please include the supplied GNU
disclaimer in our translated versions of the published GNU licences
in gnome-desktop/desktop-docs, as Debian does?

I am uncomfortable with providing translations for these licences
_without_ the GNU disclaimer. I believe doing so leaves us open to
users assuming our translationed licences are also legal documents.

I think the OFL [1] is worth considering, especially if we include

Guilherme, bem vindo! Welcome to GNOME! I'm happy to see you here. :)

Actually, Guilherme is an old timer in the GNOME community (as you can
probably see from his e-mail address, and information about him can
also be found at http://live.gnome.org/GuilhermePastore and
http://blogs.gnome.org/gpastore ).
But I suspect he still appreciated your welcoming. :-)

Hi Andre,
The .../src/orca/scripts/gaim.py file has the following new strings:

 Don't

if i was a translator, it would be impossible to translate this
properly. can you either try to have an entire sentence or at least add
a translator comment[1] to provide some contextual information?

I'll change it to do not. Hopefully that should be more universally
understandable.

Thanks.

that's not the issue. it's more about splitting sentences, see
http://developer.gnome.org/doc/tutorials/gnome-i18n/developer.html#split-sentences

i just cannot translate Don't on its own, it can be a dozen of words
and meanings in my language, depending on the *entire* sentence.

cheers,

Well, it was simple. As Gora said, the original es.po file was overwritten with the eu.po file.
Sorry, I'm not an expert... internationalization is a a head-ache source for us :S

Now we have hr.po, eu.po, ru.po and others... and I had a big surprise when I run my application and it is showed in Euskera! (eu.po). But my system is set to spanish. So I think that maybe I
touched something... but I don't know what :) If it is only that application, look to see if your es_ES.gmo file somehow got overwritten with the eu_XX.gmo file, though I am not sure how that could have happened. If it happens to all applications,
your setup has somehow been misconfigured. Check the environment variables, $LC_ALL, $LANG, and $LANGUAGE. Regards, Gora ___

I ended up just changing it to two strings that hopefully have a full
meaning:

  speak chat room name.

do not speak chat room name.

Hopefully that simplifies things.

The .../src/orca/scripts/gaim.py file has the following new strings:

As Andre said, some of these new messages appear to be very broken
from a i18n point of view:

 Don't
 Message from chat room

A golden rule when marking messages for translation is that sentences
should be self-contained. In other words, concatenating pieces of a
sentence together is a big no-no
(http://developer.gnome.org/doc/tutorials/gnome-i18n/developer.html#split-sentences).
This is because word order, genders, and other grammatic rules vary a
lot between languages, so there is no way to assume in what form a
given word or sentence fragment should be used in any language, or
where it should be placed inside the sentence.

To solve this, use a *printf-style approach if necessary:

line = _(Do not speak chat room name.)
line = _(Message from chat room %s.) % chatRoomName

This will allow the translator to place the %s wherever necessary in
the translated string.

Arafat Medini [EMAIL PROTECTED] is still the Arabic coordinator in
GNOME. He hasn't let us know about any resignation on this list, so he
is still the official Arabic coordinator
(http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gtp/teams.html). Arafat, can you
please clarify?

'sinplomo', we would like to know more about you, before you can be
considered as a candidate for any new coordinatorship. We would like
to know your real name, and we would also like to know of any previous
Arabic translation contributions that you have made. Can you please
give us a summary (preferrably with URLs)?
Furthermore, we would like you to get yourself an account in our
Bugzilla (http://bugzilla.gnome.org/), and we would also like you to

already done so.

That would be really nice, but it's still not the issue here.
To clarify, let me take the example and show you how it's translated in
Dutch.

English: Speak chat room name
Dutch:Chatroomnaam uitspreken

English: Do not speak chat room name
Dutch:Chatroomnaam niet uitspreken

Note that the translation of 'Do not' ('niet' in Dutch) is in the middle
of the second sentence.

In other words if you split the sentences like they are now, and
concatenate it at run time, the translations would sound like a Dutch
master Yoda (Speak do not chat room name), which could be endearing, but
not what I want as a translator.

context prefix for strings in glade/xml files?

2006-07-14 Thread Andre Klapper
hejhej,

i'm looking for information how to solve
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=339156 - seems like one needs
to use a context prefix like described at
http://live.gnome.org/GnomeI18nDeveloperTips , but noone so far could
tell me how to use this for glade and xml files. if i remember the
gettext manual correctly, it is possible for glade files, but definitely
not for the xml files that evolution uses for the menus. any ideas how
to fix this? :-(

comments welcome,

thanks,
andre
