Merging translations from Ubuntu, keeping fuzzy strings
I've received some Ubuntu translations and I'm wondering how to best merge them. The up-to-date translated strings look fine, but fuzzy strings in the gnome PO file are untranslated in the Ubuntu PO file, and also in the merged PO file. For example: In http://l10n.gnome.org/vertimus/gedit/master/po/nn , the word GTK_WRAP_CHAR is present in some fuzzy strings in the gnome PO file, but those fuzzy strings are not in the Ubuntu file or the merged file. Instead, the updated msgids are untranslated. Also, the gnome file has history/previous version of the string, but the ubuntu file and the merged file doesn't have the previous string included. Item in Nautilus
I'm having a bit of difficulty with the word Item in Nautilus when translating to Norwegian Nynorsk (nn_NO). Item is used in place of File, i.e. Move item to Trash, Rename item etc. I have difficulty finding a short generic word to translate it with, the generic words I can find feel clumsy or are rather long. Unable to push to git repository. utf-8 bug in git?
I am trying to push commits to gimp-nn.po. For reference, this is the git command I used: $ git commit --author 'Kolbjørn Stuestøl kolbjo...@stuestoel.no' -m 'Updated Norwegian Nynorsk translation' I then used cherry-pick to commit the same fix to both master and gimp-2-6 branches. I had cloned the repo a couple of days ago, and forgot to rebase before I committed the changed file. As one would expect, my push failed because the remote repo had new patches. So I tried to rebase. $ git pull --rebase First, rewinding head to replay your work on top of it... /sw/lib/git-core/git-am: line 682: Stuestøl: command not found Patch does not have a valid e-mail address. What happens here? My guess would be that git somehow chokes on the non-ascii characters in the author name when doing string splitting. Or am I doing something wrong? Git 1.7.8, installed via Fink. git deleted nn.po on commit
I updated a translation received from a translator, and committed according to what is normal procedure, as far as I can tell. Translation of update-manager in Ubuntu: Official GNOME app?
Short question: Is the application “update-manager” (update manager for Ubuntu) an official part of GNOME? It is not currently listed on damned-lies. Should it be? Tldr: The program update-manager in Ubuntu is described in Launchpad as “update-manager: GNOME application that manages apt updates”. Is this an official part of GNOME, or does it just mean that this program is intended for use with GNOME? We're trying to clean up Norwegian Nynorsk translations for the next Ubuntu release, and want to synchronize Ubuntu translations with upstream projects. It seems Upstream for Update-manager is a separate project in Launchpad, and not hosted on GNOME servers: https://launchpad.net/update-manager update-manager is not currently mentioned in damned-lies. Feature request for damned-lies: Ignore changed sourceref in diff view
Is it possible to make the diff function in damned-lies ignore the sourceref lines? GNOME policy for IEC binary prefixes?
does GNOME have an official policy for whether applications should use KiB, MiB etc. instead of kB, MB etc. when refering to 1024 bytes, 1024*1024 bytes etc? However, it's obvious that translator comments are needed in the source to point this out, since so many have made this mistake. Python library for reading and writing OP files
Is there a Python library for reading and writing PO files? I'm looking for something that will give me something like an object containing (msgids, msgstrs, isFuzzy, isObsolete) for each msgid (with plural support), and will write such strings to a PO file. As far as Google will tell me[1] there's not too much around, but I think what I'm looking for is hidden inside Pootle. In case the msgstr is untranslated or fuzzy, doesnt the original msgid
string show up on the interface? Hence if these strings are left blank
the original msgid i.e. some prefix| would be used in the display,
which beats the purpose of leaving out the prefix in the translation in
the first place.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
So some context| could be translated to some context| (msgstr ==
msgid) and the problem goes away?

I was a bit surprised to see Norwegian Nynorsk listed as a newly
supported language, since the status pages lists it at only 76 %. Also

dropped to partially supported around GNOME 2.12 or during GNOME 2.13, IIRC.

It is %Id not %ld (a big 'i', not a small 'l'). Maybe this helps you?
Good point. When I put %Id, my msgfmt accepted the file. However, I
believe the bug still is real, since GNOME CVS refuses my file:
877 translated messages, 2 untranslated messages.

The mail server (mail.gnome.org) appears to be receiving too many spam
connections lately that can cause it to miss legitimate connections from
your mail server (that is, your mail server may try a few times to

My university uses a simple and apparently very effective anti-spam trick:
When an SMTP connection from an unknown/external host comes in, the
connection is accepted, and the remote machine then sends HELO or
EHLO. The local server then does nothing, but simply holds the
connection for thirty seconds before answering. If I understand
correctly, this is well within the required limits of an SMTP
conversation, but a spammer, which has to go thru thousands or
millions of such conversations (and perhaps operates from a pwned
private computer) will usually just send the message without listening
to what the SMTP server answers. Since the SMTP server has not yet
answered the HELO/EHLO, it ignores everything the remote host says.

do a cvs update ChangeLog before you add your entry. Don't add your

it takes you to update the ChangeLog, add your entry, and commit the
new ChangeLog and PO files.

Near-duplicate strings in programs (Open, _Open etc.)
A suggestion for the applications of the future:
Many programs have lots of near-duplicate strings that differ only by
'_' or '.'. For example, both 'Open' and '_Open' are listed in most
programs. Also, many GConf description schemas have a 'long' and
'short' description that sometimes only differs in that the long ends
with a period, while the short one doesn't.
Can't these near-duplicates be merged somehow? For example
(pseudocode):
g_menu_item(item, _(_Open));
g_menu_item_desc(item, strrep(_(_Open), _, ));
I.e., instead of merking both Open and _Open in source as
translatable, mark only _Open and remove the _ from the
translation as needed.
I'm not saying this is a huge problem, but the less duplicate strings,
the better.

Missing features leads to lots of people thinking up their own hacks.
For example, here's a bash script that downloads the files for one
language for you:

-N is a timestamp check, but it's only there to save a little
bandwith. wget will happily overwrite any files already in the
directory.
Set LANG_CODE to your language code, of course. I don't know if it'll
work on Mac (you need a bourne shell and wget).

Anyway, the entries in question are:
nn, N_(Norwegian (Nynorsk)),

so there is clearly a difference between the language code.
Are these both distinct Norwegian language codes? I haven't encountered
Nyorsk before, so I thought I should check.
Nyorsk is a typo. It should be Nynorsk. I'm not sure if it's
necessary to have both lang codes (I only make nn.no-files, never
nn_NO.po, and there's no significant use of Nynorsk outside Norway
that I'm aware of).

(The first offending thing seems to be Chambéry). This results in weird
behavior in msgmerge, which has resulted in breaking all (?) non-ASCII
PO files also.
I am investigating this, but would someone who knows more about intltool
and stuff take a look? Locations.xml.in looks to be valid UTF-8 and XML
(as XML doesn't require an encoding declaration if the file is in
UTF-8).
The offending ISO-8859-1 string is in a translator comment, which I
assume the XML parser ignores, and therefore there's no error in the XML
file. So the problem is that gettext isn't clever enough to ignore
invalid characters in comments?
The second offence, Bâle-Mulhouse-Fribourg, is also in ISO-8859-1 and
is in a comment. The next offending string is in the same comment:
Basel-Mülhausen-Freiburg
Next: Bôvetchén, België, Lübeck, Saint-Étienne, Brünn,
Brüssel, Flämish-, São Paulo, Tchalerwè, Baden-Württemberg,
Köln, København, and it no doubt goes on and on.

As Ross already said, that's not possible.
The only way for the sysadmins to detect if a user has an ssh key

My fumbling fingers left out the c in the msgfmt check once today, so
my doc _looked_ OK. Fortunately, the CVS on-commit check picked up the
remaining errors. Gotta love gettext. ;)
I have (amongst others) these aliases defined in bash:
alias mgc='msgfmt -cv nn.po'
alias cvsci='mgc cvs ci -m `head -3 ChangeLog` nn.po ChangeLog'
I've made it habit to only commit with the 'cvsci' alias. This has been
helpful at times. It's also significantly less typing, so it's been an
easy habit to pick up. I also have a script that updates the ChangeLog
for me when I commit (which is very rarely these days).

It will be shipped in Mandriva Linux 2006, which is scheduled at Oct 2005.
But will there be more releases? Will maintainers think that a new
