The error is pretty explicit: you need to fix errors in your files so that `msgfmt -vc` stops complaining. Often it is something like a missing double quote or other malformed messages. Christopher (CCed as well) also expressed interest in reviving the team, as Zander pointed out. I think it’s great that we have two active people arriving at around the same time. Until the hand over, I suggest you start not only translating more modules (I see you both only have done one so far), but also reviewing each other’s work, and maybe coming up with common rules that you’ll follow, such as vocabulary choice, as sometimes a single word can be translated many ways and consistency is important. In my experience, either the new coordinator or the current/previous one sends an email to the gnome-i18n list with the other one in CC, and the other one responds to confirm the change. I also don’t understand why the list would have to know about an email address change. If it’s about the address subscribed to the list, then anyone should be able to update it on their own at mail.gnome.org. Next steps for Fractal
Hello, CCing Julian, co-maintainer of the Fractal As some of you may know, a rewrite of Fractal has been happening for a while now. The master branch was mostly inactive while the rewrite was happening on the fractal-next branch. The application was not yet usable, we didn’t even offer a nightly flatpak, and the pace of changes was such that it didn’t make sense to put it on Damned lies yet. We are now about to change that. `master` will be renamed to `legacy` and `fractal-next` will be renamed to `main`. `main` will, as the name states, become the main branch. A nightly flatpak will be provided through the GNOME apps nightly repository, replacing the current nightly built from `master`. The application is not advanced enough to be considered beta, we are not replacing the beta and stable builds from flathub. This is still in development and we are not freezing strings yet, but we’ve reached a point where strings are going to be moving a lot less and it makes sense to start translating. I’ll announce when the change happens so we can do the switcheroo on DL. That’s for the heads up to translators. Now the question that came up when planning this is whether we could bring back the old translations to provide a base for translators, so they don’t have to start from scratch if the old version was already translated. I am the first one to say that developers should stay away from po files, but in this case… I don’t know. Can we just copy over files from the old `po` directory` into the new one? We aren’t going to “touch” the files and try any magic, merging, or replacement. This would be a simple copy-paste of the files. I think that is the same thing we’ve been doing in the past for instance for release notes. Does that work here? A speaker of a given language surely has a better chance of knowing a place by their localised names, don’t they? Short answer: no. Longer answer: testing mnemonics is tedious and requires exhaustive manipulations of the localized apps. Most translators do their best when working on the translation of a given application to try it out, but conflicts happen. It is already difficult to check for duplicate mnemonics in a given menu, but if you add keyboard shortcuts to the mix then it’s just unrealistic. It is unreasonable to ask translators to hunt them down, even more so for apps that still use GTK3 and will be ported to GTK4, making this work short lived. If users find specific problems in specific applications in a specific language, they should request an appropriate fix from the relevant team. Translators, this is a very early version of this piece of software and the strings are still quite rough. I opened a bunch of issues and I expect strings to change a lot soon after release. Keep that in mind and if your resources are tight, maybe skip this version. If on the other hand you have the opportunity to work on this and don’t mind having a significant amount of work to redo, then please don’t hesitate to open issues so the problematic strings can be fixed. Sophie has been very responsive and will appreciate your feedback. You don’t need to have teams on board to do that: the i18n coordinators just have to decide that it is part of our extended platform, like Freedesktop is, and we can add it immediately so we see its status alongside the rest of the platform. As for taking responsibility, I would say yes but with a lower priority than GNOME itself. Branches and releases adjusted for the Dictionary module
Hi, The gnome-dictionary module has not seen a release from master since GNOME 3.26. Emmanuele will make one for GNOME 40, but for recent stable releases the relevant branch is the old gnome-3-26. I just fixed it on Damned lies, and this email is to let coordinators that next GNOME will indeed have a release from current master.
