Freeze break request(s) (was Re: New (hidden) settings translations in totem)

2022-02-17 Thread Bastien Nocera
Hey,

As I didn't receive any answers to this mail, I'm resending it with a
new subject line.

I would like to land this:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/totem/-/merge_requests/247
as mentioned in the original message.

As well as this one:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/totem/-/merge_requests/248
which adds a bunch of new shortcuts.

Cheers

New (hidden) settings translations in totem

2022-02-15 Thread Bastien Nocera
Hey,

I should have landed this earlier, but I got caught up.

This would add 2 new strings that don't need to be translated because
we don't have a UI for it:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/totem/-/merge_requests/247/diffs?commit_id=0ed623b4f1d3c5abfb29d353ac26a8679dd5a6d3

We still don't have a way to mark translations as important/not
important, but this one definitely falls into the latter category.

I know how to ask for string freezes, thanks, but it's not really
helpful, as it's not going to be the experience users would encounter.

There are 97 language translations, and they're unlikely to be updated
in short order, contrary to branches that are in-development and close
to release.

So question stands.

Out of curiosity, what do you think an alternative would be? Because I

Empty notifications, or untranslated notifications? Tough choice

2021-07-21 Thread Bastien Nocera
Hey!

What do you fine folks of the translation persuasion prefer?

Empty low battery notifications like this one:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-settings-daemon/-/issues/607
or untranslated notifications like one you can generate with:
notify-send -i battery-caution-symbolic "Device battery low" "Device is
low in power (10%)"

Thoughts more than welcome in:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-settings-daemon/-/merge_requests/252
which I'll cherry-pick in the GNOME 40 branch.

Thanks!

totem-pl-parser translation updates

2021-06-23 Thread Bastien Nocera
Hey,

I've done some work on the translations in totem-pl-parser with regards
to possible licensing problems.

I've:
- removed all the obsolete message translations including the ones that
still contained a copy of the GNU GPL blurb from totem
- changed all the totem references to totem-pl-parser
- and remove the Breton translation which had an incompatible license
(and not just a message that said "same license as PACKAGE")

Is it worth me filing a bug against damned lies about making sure that
all the translation files actually contain a line that defers the
license decision to the package itself? I've seen a number of
translations without such a line, or that called the package "PACKAGE",
which is less than ideal.

Cheers

Right, see below.

I never actively disabled notifications on Transifex, I just never
logged in to the website after setting up scripts in shared-mime-info
back in 2011. I receive emails for completed translations, but not for
messages.

I'd be happy pointing people to a particular address, or mailing-list,
but the problem is that I don't know what the workflow looks like for
translators on that platform.

Currently, the HACKING section in shared-mime-info's README says:
"
Translations should go through Transifex.net, and the freedesktop.org
team:
http://www.transifex.net/projects/p/shared-mime-info/
"

Could you explain what the flow should be for potential contributors,
so I can document it in that file?

Something like "Join the freedesktop.org team on Transifex, and email
XXX if you run into problems" ?

It looks like the problem isn't so much the infrastructure but rather
the admin around it. I'm happy to see Piotr and you are both involved
in the fd.o translations on Transifex :)

Freedesktop.org Transifex org management

2019-02-26 Thread Bastien Nocera
Hey,

[I know this isn't directly related to GNOME, but has there is an
overlap between the folks involved in GNOME and in Transifex's
Freedesktop.org org, and GNOME is a consumer of those translations,
here I go]

I maintain shared-mime-info on freedesktop.org:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xdg/shared-mime-info/

shared-mime-info uses Transifex as the translation service from back
when it was a Fedora hosted/sponsored project.

Somebody contacted me recently about how to get approved as a
translator for shared-mime-info for their language, which means getting
accepted as a translator in the "freedesktop" group:
https://www.transifex.com/freedesktop/public/

The problem is translators have had problems getting accepted into that
group, there seems to be no list of people to contact on the above
page, and, in the end, translators contact the module maintainers
directly, and they (I) know nothing about how transifex works from the
translator/group management side.

This is an example of the communication I received after some emails
discussions:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xdg/shared-mime-info/merge_requests/17

And I've also found 8 more messages in my Transifex inbox from
translators who were trying to get accepted there.

I've been told Claude was responsible for the group. Is he still
responsible for it? Is there documentation we can point translators to
about applying for a position in the group? Or should I start looking
at other ways to get shared-mime-info (and other modules I maintain)
translated?

That was the same error message that was in the xine-lib backend for

easily fix a long-standing problem with some sub-par error messages.

I'd like to add those new strings in totem 3.32:

either, so I'm going to close this bug.

Well, for some of them there are no major cities to which we could
attach the airports/weather stations.

In any case, I think this might be something I'll poke gnome-i18n about
in the future, so we could "crowdsource" updating all this. There are
about 8000 entries in total, so it's not a one-person job...

libgweather message context problems?

2017-12-13 Thread Bastien Nocera
Hey,

I was wondering whether this particular problem:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=573969
was a big problem for translators in the past couple of years.

I don't think that it's worth invalidating nearly all the current
strings to avoid problems in a couple of edge cases.

(I do know about:

Freeze break request, Keyboard Settings

2016-09-08 Thread Bastien Nocera
Hey,

The redesigned Keyboard Settings landed shortly before GUADEC, and I
had hoped that there would be less to fix up after the initial big
commit so that we would be entering the code freeze in a good state.

The following bug has a number of patches:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=769314

That make it match the designs, and fixes a number of bugs. There will
probably be a small follow-up patch, as some keybindings can't be
captured right now.

If somebody wants to test this patch set, the (reverse, as per git log)
order of the patches is:
keyboard: Don't apply "Backspace" straight away
keyboard: Add helper to detect empty keybindings
keyboard: Fix grabs not working when showing the dialog
keyboard: Don't regrab the keyboard after an event
keyboard: Don't rely on events to grab keyboard
keyboard: Don't grab the mouse pointer
keyboard: Remove unused variable
shortcut-editor: show custom page while waiting for input
shortcut-editor: move widgets into a stack
shortcut-editor: update reset button position and style
shortcut-editor: use a different page to edit custom shortcuts
keyboard: add enter-new-shortcut asset
shortcuts: remove bottom label
shortcut-editor: hide editing dialog on Escape
shortcut-editor: use states to handle headerbar mode
shortcut-editor: add 'Set' button
shortcut-editor: update header title message
keyboard: use a better icon to represent "Reset Shortcut"
keyboard: make Add button insensitive after editing
keyboard: change standard shortcut top label

Fix for truncated panel names in Settings

2016-04-07 Thread Bastien Nocera
Hey,

If in your language, you've seen truncated Settings names, such as in
this screenshot:
https://bug647087.bugzilla-attachments.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=185464

You can fix it now!

In master, for GNOME 3.22, the names of all the panels now include soft
hyphens, which will automatically break the line, and not clip the
words anymore. The string change means that English with large text
(which you can enable in the Universal Access panel) is now fixed, and
it's a reminder that you should add those hyphens as well.

For earlier versions of GNOME, including the current stable 3.20,
translators!, you'll be on your own.

I will be opening bugs for each one of the languages against which
problems were reported, so that you are aware that this language's
translation will need fixes.

See https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=647087#c13 for more
information.

Hopefully, soon enough, we will have a new shell design which won't
have this sort of problems:
https://blogs.gnome.org/aday/2016/01/13/a-settings-design-update/

Freeze break request for gnome-control-center and gnome-desktop

2016-03-19 Thread Bastien Nocera
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=655041
contains 3 patches.

One that adds a simple new function to gnome-desktop, one to add the
"Refresh Rate" drop-down to the display dialogue (which adds a new
string), and one to reduce the number of confusing frequencies from the
list (which adds 2 new strings that are unlikely to be translated for
most languages).

The drop-down looks like this:
https://bug655041.bugzilla-attachments.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=324127
though it will say "NTSC" instead of "ATSC" now, as it is a more
recognisible term.

This hasn't received UI review, but the changes are limited, and won't
stop us from providing the same functionality in a different way[1] in
the future.

Cheers

This one will only show in the test suite, not in any user-facing
software. I don't even think that the string should be translated.

This will only show when using the command-line grl-launch.

This isn't much of a problem. The strings won't be visible in user-
facing software such as Videos, Music, or Rhythmbox.

I don't know what Juan plans to do, but the easiest would be to unmark
those strings as translatable, or simply leave it as-is.

Note that for grilo, we would hack around the problem by hard-coding
the same access key that gnome-online-accounts is using into the
plugin. So it wouldn't be required for grilo, but would certainly be
useful for other types of integration in third-party apps that do not
follow GNOME's schedule (Rhythmbox for example).

This breaks the string freeze. What is the plan for the next
 releases?
Will you have a 3.14.3 or is it going to be a 3.18.x? The best
approach as far as i18n is concerned would be to branch for 3.14
before 199bf86bcd6b1adb1b2b2725a7f8055bfac0c55e and then have the
 next
release be a 3.18.x (and possibly also have a 3.14.3, but without the
 new string).

Branched before the changes targetted at 3.18 were merged.

Sorry, I didn't know the Gnome schedules, but the change adds a missing
feature and should not be reverted.
The change has been committed as per bgo #720312 by Bastien.

I've unmarked the string for translation in gnome-3-8 and gnome-3-10,
which should be acceptable for now.

The point of the string freeze is not to have new English strings pop
up in the interface; intentionally not marking strings as translatable,
while they should be, is absolutely not a solution, and that's a
misconception that should have died years ago.

The options are simple, please revert or ask for permission.

I actually think it's fine in this particular case, it's a string that
almost never is presented to users, and I'm not even sure that it should
be marked for translation to begin with.

gnome-user-share clue bar string break

2013-11-09 Thread Bastien Nocera
Heya,

I've file this bug with a string changing patch:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=711726

It was spotted in https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=694995#c4
but as you can see, we never took the opportunity to make the change.

Is this OK to commit for GNOME 3.10?

Cheers

If they aren't user visible, why are they marked for translation?

Because they used to be visible prior to the Background redesign in 3.6.

We still have the same problem in GSettings schemas where, in the past,
we translated strings that weren't actually user visible. It would be
good if we could mark strings as it would be nice if it were
translated, but not a problem if not.

  Any opinion on this?
No 3.7 tarball of nautilus-sendto has been released yet, and I'm planning
to release nautilus 3.7.92 later today, so there would still potentially be
time for the change to be included in this release.

Even if I didn't spell it explicitly in my previous message, the change
implies an UI freeze break request for nautilus-sendto, and a string freeze
  break request for nautilus.

I'd prefer to remove nautilus-sendto from 3.8; it's in my opinion way
too late in the schedule to get those changes in and appropriately
 tested.

Those changes are based on the existing nautilus-sendto code, they're
nicely separated, and they've been better tested than nautilus-sendto
had the chance to be in the past couple of releases.

Still, I'd let this slip in, be tested in .92, translated, and removed
 from 3.8.0 if necessary.

Cool. FWIW, the only string changes are the 2 strings in nautilus,
there's nothing more to translate in nautilus-sendto itself.

I'm sorry, I should have probably explained this a little better.
Nobody is trying to gut nautilus-sendto, the goal is to have something
working nicely for the use case of sending a file to somebody. As far
as I can see, the Email option is really the only interesting one
working correctly for nautilus-sendto at the moment, and that's where
 the patch came from.

It's not the only interesting one working correctly, but it's the only
one for which a workflow with a UI that doesn't suck was designed.

For example, the nautilus-sendto plugin in gnome-bluetooth. It works,
but it looks like crap, and even more so if you don't have any Bluetooth
targets around.

Note that nautilus-sendto has two parts: the module itself and a
Nautilus extension that adds the item to the context menus. Only the
extension lives in the nautilus source tree right now; I cannot really
answer the question about whether it's used by other modules, probably
Bastien would know. Of course, the nautilus change doesn't make any
sense without the corresponding change that removes the dialog in
nautilus-sendto, so probably Bastien should send an UI freeze request
 for that first?

I wouldn't have. There would be no UI to nautilus-sendto, so it wouldn't
change the UI as much as change the workflow.

I should also note that this is not a high priority bug for me, and
it's also completely fine if we decide it's better to punt such a
 change to the next cycle.

In which case we'd think about how we want to implement sharing for the
other targets, and implement this properly (eg. without the legacy) in
nautilus-sendto.

So a cursory grep indicates that nautilus-sendto is used by
evolution, evince, yelp, rhythmbox, and cheese. I understand
this wouldn't exactly break these modules, but it would offer
a different experience than what the maintainers expected.

Not exactly that different.

And that potentially invalidates documentation and marketing
materials for any of those modules (or third-party modules
 I've missed).

Is there any documentation mentioning it?

I suspect none of them would even have used nautilus-sendto
to begin with if this were the original behavior, because I
really don't see how it's any different than

   g_app_info_launch_default_for_uri(mailto:?attach=...;);

About 150 lines of code to handle different mailers in nautilus-sendto
tell a different story:
http://git.gnome.org/browse/nautilus-sendto/tree/src/plugins/evolution/evolution.c#n305

Especially for evolution, it's very strange to call out to
another program just to open its own composer window.

I agree, far from optimised. It should really be done internally within
Evolution, but it was a low-cost way of having the functionality
straight away.

But the other targets do work. I've used them. I'm sure
we could come up with better designs for them. But then
let's do that, rather than throwing them away. I'd much
rather we came up with a design and put it through the
 feature proposal process for 3.8.

There's the full list of plugins:
- evolution, half-working as e-d-s changes broke the auto-completion
- gajim, not useful to GNOME
- nautilus-burn, really obsolete
- pidgin, not useful to GNOME
- removable-devices, obsoleted by nautilus' new features
- upnp, not very useful at all

From third-parties:
- gnome-bluetooth, UI is completely broken, and functionality is already
accessible through the Bluetooth applet.
- empathy, probably the best written one, no real alternative here, but
the interaction needs to be redesigned

I've maintained nautilus-sendto for the past 7 years, and I'm happy with
those changes. nautilus-sendto's UI has been in serious need for a
redesign, and this is the first part of it.
