Anyway keen on taking over i18n-coordination-list?
Hi all! Due to life and time I am currently not able to manage i18n-coordination-list. If anybody else wants to do it, please step up, otherwise I would probably propose the list for removal as it hasn't been used a lot in the past year. 5 posts overall, 3 were CC to gnome-i18n. Hi! Oh, well, I think so. There was a complaint from the administrator of the gnome i18n list that he got too many join requests, and wanted to shut down the list. We have found out a way to reduce significantly - almost remove the join requests coming thru to the list maintainer. I think we then can continue the list. So long so good. Should to clarify, it was not about *this* list but about i18n-coordination-l...@gnome.org mailing list... Coordination-list, still needed
Hi all! Do we still need the i18n-coordination-list that was used by the gnome-i18n coordination time sometimes when matters should be discussed publicly? The background is that a lot of spammers try to subscribe to the list which obviously fails because it is invitation only, but causes massive mail traffic and annoyance for me. Hi Keld! I think the list could be useful for me in developing international standards in the field. I am the editor of the Linux locale standard, and I have got permission to enhance the standard. Well, I don't really get your point. The list is a private list of the gnome i18n-coordination team and was actually created once for a specific issue that has been resolved long ago. Anything about the linux locale standard should be discussed publicly on this list. Is it possible for you to just reject the spammers? If so, I have similar problems, and would like any info you have on doing that. How do people/crawlers get info on the list? Maybe you could remove such info. While you can mass reject mail, mailman doesn't allow you to mass reject subscription requests which makes things annoying. Hi Milan! Hi, thanks for the notice, I overlooked the string, it was not intended to break the string freeze, I'm sorry for that. The required strings were supposed to land within commit [1], which was done just before the string freeze. Even I might be able to workaround this by using the strings from [1], it would also make the code hard to read and follow. I mean: Could I ask for a permission for the two strings being added to evolution gnome-3-10 branch, please? The change which introduced them is there to make sure the users will not lose their data (calendar events) when copying/moving recurring events between calendars. Sounds reasonable to me 1/2 from i18n. Hi Milan! Matthew decided to outsource the usability to GtkFileChooser, but it's not ready yet for our needs (to open in previously used folder), thus I want to return back functionality users are used to in Evolution. It's very rare to attach the same file multiple times, you usually want to add more files from the same folder. Currently, you are presented with Recently used items, which is useless, then you need mouse to get to your album folder, which can be anywhere. I hope you can imagine the pain for users. As an example, I cannot imagine loosing option for Always ask me where to save files from FireFox, neither if it would always open in other than previously used folder. It would be a deal breaker for me. OK, I see your point and these strings are most likely still in most translations. So 1 of 2 with i18n-head on but I would really like to have usuability in GtkFileChooser fixed because it is personally annoying me to always default to recent use files (= release-team...). Hi Chngis! Nobody hear doubts that you produce high-quality translations but open-source software is about review, trust and reputation. Nobody on this list can speak your language so *we* cannot check if your translation is ok, only your coordinator can, and I am pretty sure he will do so as soon as possible. If in the end he thinks that your translation are really high-quality he might give you more rights to push them right-away but that's the coordinators decision. Thanks for your patience. Hi! The first bug (birthday button) introduces the strings Select... and Select. I can just speak for the translations and I think this shouldn't be a big deal as we still have a bit of time to translate those two strings, so 1/2 for i18n. Not entirely sure if it should be … instead of ... but that might be german specific... Hi! Seriously, I don't quite see the usefulness of translating clutter at all: at ~570 strings, and it seems like all the strings for translation are GObject property names and descriptions, and I don't see why they would be translated. AFAICT, they would only appear in a debugger, so they are more or less as useful as schema strings, and shouldn't be in the reduced PO files. Agreed they aren't as easy to spot as schema strings, but are annoying nevertheless (and sometimes hard to translate). It's your decision what you want to translate but those strings appear in the user interface of glade (ok, if it supported clutter widgets at least). They might also appear in other development tools. The reduced po file is create by damned-lies so their content can be defined however people like it. Hi! Apparently, these words are accent-sensitive (for example, έλεγχος and ελεγχος are different, so when the user mistypes without an accent in the local script, nothing appears. So, a tip is to also type the words without accents. The search in Unity and gnome-shell should actually be clever enough to work with both. If there isn't a bug about it already one should be filed. Hi! By the way, why the master branch is string-frozen? You have to inform the i18n-list when you create a branch that is then defined as stable/string-frozen. i18n-team will assume this on branches that are called gnome-x-y (e.g. gnome-3-2) but you don't have those in libpeas. master is string-frozen after a GNOME release until you announce such a branch. To try and keep the ball moving on this, I have made a feature request bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/intltool/+bug/918622 in the intltool project (which is used to extract the strings and put them in po-files.) I think it would be better to file a bug against its-tool since it is definitly the more actively developed project when it comes to extracting strings from xml files. Hi! As the proposal above does not mention a date for The Freeze I propose either Feb 20 (current UI Freeze date) or Feb 13. I would propose Feb 20 (or 21) to be able to include some work that might happen at the Brno Hackfest. Writing documentation often means to find small usuability bugs that can be fixed easily and we shouldn't miss that chance. Hi! The Contest is not open to residents of Cuba, Iran, Syria, North Korea, Sudan, Myanmar (Burma), Quebec, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Italy or to other individuals restricted by U.S. export... I understand Google might be subject to US laws, but then, do without me. I stumbled upon this yesterday while registering and it is indeed unfortunate but we cannot do anything about it. I think somebody told me that Google tried to at least allow the countries that don't have U.S. embargos on them but it is too difficult to get around the *local* laws of those countries. I am pretty sure Carol can give you details if you are interested. GNOME doesn't have these restrictions of course, but Google runs this contest for free, so we cannot do anything about it. Hi! At the moment I translate OSS-projects to tatar language (tt locale) and i wish translate GNOME-apps too. Tatar team of Gnome is exist, but main coordinator (Albert Fazli) not answered to me. What I should do in this sutiation? If you want to coordinate the team, write a mail to this list with the old coordinator in CC. If he doesn't react for 1-2 weeks you can become the new coordinator. You should have a bugzilla-account at least, commit access will come later, you can ask one this list if you have translations that can be committed in the meantime. Hi! I would like to propose myself as the new coordinator of Assamese language team since the current coordinator has been unable to help out with translation and coordination tasks. I have been working for Gnome Assamese translation since version 3.0 and had to rely on other translation teams for getting the translation committed (ref: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=659595). As suggested by Claude, I am writing in to request the change in coordinatorship if the current coordinator would like to hand it over. Kindly, also let me know any further formalities are required from my end to go forward with this request. Just for clarification: Have you been able to contact the old coordinator? If not, he should be CC'd on this request and if there is no reply within one week we can change the coordinator. Hi! Consequently the same question goes for String Change Announcement Period - CC'ing gnome-i18n as I'm wondering if translators still consider the String Change Announcement Period useful. I'm all in favour of dropping it, for the following reasons: 1. I doubt it is really useful for translators 2. I think only a minority really announce new strings 3. It would be easy to do something automatic from l10n.gnome.org if needed Agreed, can we just merge the String freeze into the The Freeze, too? Because if you cannot change UI/features it is unlikely that strings will change and if they do, as Shaun pointed out already, you just sent a mail. I18n didn't block many strings the the last cycles and it oftens gives us the oppertunity to fix the string (english, type, whatever) before it is commited. Hi! Still, I thought we have code freeze requirements too. As I see it, this patch adds new functionality to evolution, even if it's not obvious how to enable it. This may require approval from release team (?). No, hard-code freeze ends with the 3.2.0 tarballs. You can change as much code as you want, string and ui freeze stay in effect though and feature freeze is a very soft thing. Hi! I'm sorry, that wasn't intentional. Can I fix it by unmarking the string from translation for 3.2.x? This one shouldn't be shown to a user often, it's rather rare string, when a syntax of a filter doesn't match, which can happen only if a developer develops new filters, I believe. Just request a freeze-break for 3.2.1. Unmarking the string doesn't fix it but just creates another bug (string not marked for translation...). As you probably doing that and I think that is fine to fix in 3.2.1, 1 of 2 from i18n. Hi! The aisleriot games are written in scheme, using embedded guile. We have a _ function in scheme that is a wrapper around the C gettext() function. It would be easy to wrap other functions, but I don't know how to do it so that the scanning tools can pick up the messages. Normally nothing else than the _() function (which is some macro in C but I guess it just calls gettext) should be needed as it can handle all the context/comment stuff correctly AFAIK. Hi! Instead of keywords, we could just add bugzilla pseudo accounts for string-freeze-br...@gnome.bugs, ui-freeze-br...@gnome.bugs, code-freeze-br...@gnome.bugs. Then to request a break, just cc: the appropriate address on the bug along with a comment explaining why. Release/docs/i18n team members would just watch the appropriate address and so automatically get cc:ed on all the appropriate bugs. If we do that I would definitly suggest not to add individual people but the appropriate mailing list to those pseudo accounts. Especially for string freeze it is often really good to have more people looking at the added string because you will never know if any language might have difficulties with a phrase for one or the other reason. And it would keep things mostly the same from an approver POV as you would be notified and would get all feedback by bugmail. Hi! The link dialog shows a list of all contacts that you can link to, and at the top it shows some suggestions that folks recommends. We really want to add a header to this list that says Suggestions, but this would add a new string. So, can I add this? Overall I think it would be stupid to fail here because of string freeze. But I would suggest to add some context (and if it's just a link to the screenshot) to that string because I guess for some languages there might be more options to translate it. In addition, this could also be just Suggestion if there is only one? Do we need a plural form, too? If you can fix that (or tell me it's unneeded) 1 of 2 from i18n. Hi! The patch adds a new user-visible string used in a notification. A little bit of background: gnome-shell's user menu now has two controls which interact - a switch to turn notifications off (formerly known as Busy) and a combo box to set the IM status. Now, when turning off notifications, the IM status is set automatically to busy, which is not exactly obvious (the reason being that without notifications, incoming messages are easily missed). We would like to pop up a notification in this case explaining the behavior. It adds two string (just for reference): +Main.notify(_(Your chat status will be set to busy), +_(Notifications are now disabled, including chat messages. Your online status has been adjusted to let others know that you might not see their messages.)); As the IM status/Notification status in gnome-shell was a real mess in 3.0 I think that change might help a lot and as we still have one release candidate it should be enough time for the two strings. So 1 of 2 from i18n. But I think you should definitly ping the docs-team about it as this should be convered in the docs. Hi! Also, not all translations' (and even registered teams') locales presented at l10n.gnome.org have glibc support, so I assume it's not a required prerequisite to register a team. Are there reasons we cannot assume ru@petr1708 locale code not waiting for glibc support, as it's unlikely to change in the future? Can you give an example of a team that has a locale not in glib? Usually we have this prerequirement (see https://live.gnome.org/TranslationProject/NewLanguage) though it might be ok if a bug in glibc exists for it at least. I am going to re-install perl and see if that helps things. At least this time I am getting an error message. If you didn't install the script in some directory contained in your $PATH variable you probably need to run ./en_GB.pl input.po output.po from the directory your en_GB.pl script lies in. Otherwise, just copy the script to /usr/bin, you can run it from any directory then. Hi! GNOME 3.0 came and went, and i18n seemed to never be a goal of GNOME 3.0. I'm hoping things can improve in future releases, so I'm trying to follow up on some bugs that affect i18n that I have reported before which haven't received attention yet. Well, that's not true, i18n was and is always a core feature for GNOME. In which cases are we allowed to fix i18n issues or other errors in the source text ourselves? Even in a case with a patch supplied in Bugzilla I'm not necessarily getting a response. Of course everybody is busy, but it seems that some i18n issues are simply ignored while other things are getting attention, so I'm wondering to what extent we can still count on good i18n being an important project goal and hold developers to it just as we can for usability, security or other important issues. You may ask on #gnome-shell if they are fine with you fixing string issues (plurals, typos, etc.). Normally that shouldn't be a big deal as long as you only touch strings and no source code. But better ask because people might be unhappy with commits by random people. Hi Sebastien! For the master branch it doesn't matter, but you have also pushed the two commits in the 'releases-2-2' branch. This branch is for _releases_ only. It contains the C code generated, and it's useless to duplicate commits there... When I want to make a new release, I merge the master branch into the releases branch. So please avoid pushing commits elsewhere than the master branch. This is completely against the usual workflow for the GNOME release process. A releate-x-y (or better gnome-x-y) branch means that this branch will be used for the stable x.y.[1,2,3,...] releases and that strings are frozen in that branch. This way translators can update their translation if they have be incomplete in a minor release. The master branch is (usually) not string frozen and contains new features, etc. Generated files shouldn't be in git at all - they should be in the release tarballs only. It would be nice if you could adapt that workflow as it is useful not only for translations. In the meantime, the master branch contains the beta releases (2.1.x). Minor nit-picking: Rather create a gnome-3-2 branch by just using the gedit/gnome version you are targetting. This way everybody knows which of the version is the current stable. If you want to stick to your version scheme, use latexila-* prefix instead of gnome-. Otherwise, sounds fine! Hi! A lot of strings of the *.po are the same as in gedit. To avoid retranslating them, for creating a *.po for a new language, I take the *.po of gedit instead of creating a new one from the *.pot. Then I update the *.po with the *.pot and I delete the commented strings (which are present in gedit but not in latexila). Is it possible to do that automatically? In general - don't do this. You never know if translation are really simular even if the original strings are. Better leave a comment and let the translator decide if he wants to reuse the strings. I think the easier is to use the autotools instead of CMake so it is better integrated. But I'll need some information on how to handle the XML file and the templates (*.tex). Is there a project with similar needs? its-tool[1] seems the way to go nowadays. It does only handle xml AFAIK. Hi! At this point this it is just an idea and I am very much looking for feedback. Would this be helpful? Will developers play along? Will this be acceptable within the design goals of Damned Lies (Claude)? Should the information in this columns be what I wrote, or is there something else that would be more helpful? As there are still rules to be defined for the applications included, this is difficult to tell. However, I think at least a list of release dates would be helpful as long as it can be generated automatically from GNOME releases and only those modules that have other dates would need to update them accordingly (which could send a mail to gnome-i18n). The documentation part seems difficult to me because it is always hard to tell how up-to-date documentation is. But it would be nice to have a marker that says Don't translated, this is outdated/being updated. Hi! is about making the network panel show the same information as the gnome-shell network menu for devices that cannot be activated. In particular, we want to indicate if the device cannot be activated because firmware may be missing. This adds the same 'Firmware missing' string that was added to gnome-shell a while ago. Easiest for i18n is if you do the grep/sed magic to add the string from the gnome-shell po files to the gnome-control-center po files for those languages that translated it already. Hi! Also a bit of a warning: fredp wants me to finish the minimize difference between fallback shell bug, which possibly means a few other strings (that are all in gnome-shell, in the user menu). But I don't want to block things on this. Vincent agreed to do the magic to reuse the strings already translated for gnome-shell to reduce the load on translators. Of those 17 strings, 15 are in schemas (so really not visible, except in dconf-editor; and l10n.gnome.org has magic to let you ignore those), and 2 are error messages displayed in extremely unlikely cases: Cannot create initial panel layout.\n Launcher location is not set, cannot load launcher\n Those are displayed in the UI, right? Because otherwise we more or less agreed to not translate messages that are thrown to the command-line (using g_warning/error) as it makes it more difficult to debug things. Again, this all happens way too late and I'm very well aware of that. But I think this is all important for the 3.0 fallback story. Is release team happy with merging those changes? Overall this is considerable really late but I assume that the release-team has great interest in releasing with a 3.0 panel and as such I won't be in that way. Basically we are talking about 2 UI strings which should be doable in about a week (and even those are very unlikely to ever appear). So 1 of 2 from i18n. Hi! While we are breaking the string freeze, we also missed the opportunity to add plurals to the third string above, as it seems to need. So we'll have to fuzzy this string again at some stage for translators to spend their time again on a very visible string. Also worth pointing out that the patches will reduce the overall number of translatable strings, since it consistently users 'Software Install' as the application name in all places, instead of several different names. OK, took a look a the strings and those look good. However, the translator comment that backed g_option_context_set_summary (context, _(Package Name Installer)); and g_option_context_set_summary (context, _(Package File Installer)); are no longer at the (first) position of these strings. In general this strings don't really sound like a good summary to me. But I would at least like to have the comments /* TRANSLATORS: program name: installs a package (or packages) by name */ and /* TRANSLATORS: program name: application to install a package to provide a file */ back and updated. The new string Software install hardly needs a comment while it has two different at the moment. If you fix that, 1 of 2 from i18n. Hi Matthias! From my perspective as a release team member, the overarching goal is to ship something that will get people excited about GNOME 3. Considering that we cut down a lot on other 'tweakability' aspects, having at least set of fresh backgrounds to go with the new background panel is probably more important than following the processes to the letter. (...) Be sure that the i18n team knows that GNOME 3.0 will not be a shiny example of how releases and freezes should work and we really approved many (all?) freeze break requests coming from gnome-shell and other core modules. We really don't try to make everybody live more difficult than it already is. But I would still kindly ask everybody to follow the rules we have set for years now and that have proven to be extremely useful. Nobody has even mentioned that commit to be reverted as it is in for some time now anyway and most likely translated anyway by some teams already. But by asking you would have received valuable information that would have been easy to integrate in the commit. Touching it now to add comments (which will still hopefully happen after the release) is additional work for everybody. I hope you see my point and I am totally aware that some people are working day night to get GNOME3 out. Hi! Do I understand correctly that if you keep shut down then no string change is necessary? If that is the case, why the change in terminology? I looked at the mockups at the URL and they all mention shut down as far as I see. The main gnome-shell UI displays Power Off... (when you press the Alt-key) and I think the dialog should be consistent with that. Power Off... is also much less tech-language then Shutdown. Not even sure if the Power Off string is really a string addition, might be already there somewhere. Hi! If anyone has improved suggestions for the English strings to use, that would make me happy. Hmm, overall that's pretty brave on the last day before code freeze ;) I am not a native speaker so I would like to make sure people check the wording before this goes in. I wanted to do a positive option for Fetch messages in multiple parts, to allow better responsiveness, which would default to TRUE. But when we upgrade Evolution, any new option will be assumed to be FALSE in any pre-existing account. So AFAICT it has to be a *negative* option, along the lines of Fetch messages in one part. In general I think it would be really cool if Evolution/camel would just detect that kind of server and automatically do The right thing(tm) instead of needing user interaction but I don't know if it is easily possible. Consider this a 1/2 if native speakers approve the string. It is clearly a bug-fix and Evolution developers seems to be a ok with it. Might affect quite some people. Sorry, but -1 with my i18n hat on, this is really really late in the cycle and feature freeze is long over and everybody is busy getting all the unstable bit (control-center, etc) of GNOME 3 up and running which is difficult enough. Consider to repropose this after 3.0 so I might be included in a 3.0.1 or whatever but for now I wouldn't say that is release critical. Hi! If/when this goes in, can we please expand the comment with a URL that describes the regex syntax? Even for translators who know what regular expressions are, they might be used to another syntax than POSIX. I guess only half of the people contributing in my team would know what regular expressions are, and we don't want anybody to break this, right? :-) Sure, I can add a link to the regular expression syntax. Better off give an example of how one would do this if sometimes the string is translated and sometimes not. For example su, sudo, login may be translated (to parole for example), but ssh not. We'll need to match on Parole, parole, Password, password. Basically this string exists in an untranslated version and a translated version and both are matched. If sudo is untranslated for example (it is here in German locale) and su is than it still works for if you just match the regex against Parole/parole in your translated string because the english strings are always tried. Hi! The region panel of control center allows the user to change their configured locale. The problem is, the string says: Select a display language but the effects don't take effect until next login. This is pretty confusing. We'd like to something like: -property name=label translatable=yesSelect a display language/property +property name=label translatable=yesSelect a display language for next login/property to make things a lot clearer. Is this okay? Hmm, I see your point but wouldn't we rather do Display language (takes effect on next login)? In general this is ugly from the UI point of view anyway but I guess it is a technical problem that cannot be solved easily. It always tried the english and the localized version of this expression to match password prompts. I ask for a string-freeze break because otherwise installation as root doesn't work for non-english users.
