Hi again,
I see your string checker discovered two more strings:

   + "Send / Receive"
   + "toolbar-button"::"New"

Both used to be part of the evolution before the header bars.
The "Send / Received" had been removed only recently, for 3.46.0 (due
to not using labels in buttons in the header bar). I'm sorry I
overlooked the two old strings being returned back. It was not my
intention to hide them from you.

Err, right, my fault, I should rather link the commit itself, than its
corresponding bug report.

I thought of using both options, to have 1:1 correspondence of the
change between the stable and the development branch, but yes, I can
skip it.

You deciphered it right, the 'it' is as 'the option'. I just changed it
to your string:

[evolution] String freeze break plea for gnome-43 branch

2022-09-22 Thread Milan Crha via gnome-i18n
Hello,
I'd like to ask for a string freeze break approval for the 'evolution'
project for the gnome-43 branch in order to apply change for [1] to it.

Background: there had been added use of header bars (client side
decorations) on the most used windows of the application for the .beta
GNOME release. I've been told by multiple users on various channels for
an option to turn the header bars off. There was no such option until
the [1]. Even I agree with Andre that such claims are not a good excuse
for a code complexity (he wrote it in the [1]), I can understand the
header bars can mean a bad experience to some users.

There had been added only two options into GSettings, which have
translatable the and . It's a hidden option and
the default is to use the header bars, thus there's no difference on
the UI side with compare to the 3.46.0 release.

I returned back one string, "%s — Evolution", which had been removed
when the change landed. I guess neither this one causes a problem, but
if needed, I can remove this string for the gnome-43 branch.

That being said, I believe it's safe to include the change. The
GSettings strings are hidden, thus may not cause any disruption in the
GUI for regular users. The added functionality will help to those whom
do not need header bars, which is a plus, from my point of view.

Bye,
Milan

Report-Msgid-Bugs-To in the .po files

2022-08-02 Thread Milan Crha via gnome-i18n
Hello,
this is rather a question, than a request. I noticed that the
GNOME/evolution project's .po files contain Report-Msgid-Bugs-To with
various values, often referencing the project itself, like this:

   Report-Msgid-Bugs-To: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/issues

While it makes sense, the translations are not dealt with in the
project, but in the

   https://gitlab.gnome.org/groups/Teams/Translation/xy

instead, thus any reported issues are forwarded to the related
translation team. Would it make sense to change the
Report-Msgid-Bugs-To to the correct translation team URL?

Though more importantly, can the users get to the URL anyhow easily? If
the users cannot get to it, then it doesn't make much sense to change
the Report-Msgid-Bugs-To, because they would file a bug against the
project itself, which will be copied to the Translation team
afterwards.

This may affect more projects, the GNOME/evolution is only a project I
noticed this with.

[evolution] String freeze break approval plea

2022-03-01 Thread Milan Crha via gnome-i18n
Hi,
I'd like to ask for string freeze break approval, due to additional
changes for:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/-/issues/1373

The thing is that the change (already committed) could be harmful for
some users, hiding important information from a meeting invitation mail
due to the sender's software not providing that information in their
description. I made some improvements and attached them there, but
they, unfortunately, add two new translatable strings and change an
existing string (which is in the GSettings only). The new strings are:

"Show description provided by the sender"
"Hide description provided by the sender"

and the changed string is from:

Set to true to show invitation description as provided by
the sender, if such is available; otherwise generate the invitation
   description from the iCalendar component

to:

Set to true to show invitation description as provided by
the sender, if such is available

I only removed the second half of the string.

I believe it'll be better to have this fixed/changed for the upcoming
stable, thus this freeze break approval plea.

Thanks and bye,

evolution & evolution-data-server string & UI freeze break approval plea

2021-03-18 Thread Milan Crha via gnome-i18n
Hello,
I'd like to ask for a string and UI freeze break approval for the
3.40.1 (it could be also 3.40.0 from my point of view, but it's too
tight now, because I'll be doing a release in less than 24 hours, thus
no rush), to add OAuth2 authentication for Yahoo! servers/users. With
that change they can get the same experience as the Google users have,
but, more importantly, Verizon Media begun to force OAuth2 for the
authentication few months ago, which means trouble to the users (they
need application specific passwords, which is not always understood by
the users, not talking it adds "less security"). I would do that long
before, but I only recently figured how to ask Verizon Media for an
approval to access restricted scopes and I received an approval from
them only several days ago (they had been quick, I've been slow).

The change itself is here:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution-data-server/-/issues/317
and it's split into two parts.

One part is on the evolution-data-server side, where I added these
translatable strings:

   "OAuth2 (Yahoo!)"

"This option will use an OAuth 2.0 access token to connect to the Yahoo!
server"

   "Yahoo!"

where the first one is usually shown in the UI, when the user is
creating or editing a Yahoo! mail account. There are also strings in
the GSettings, which are not that important, from my point of view.

The Evolution part is simpler, but I'd make it even simpler for the
stable branch by not harmonizing some redundant translatable strings;
I'd add only one string:

"Add Yahoo! Con_tacts to this account"

This will be shown at the end of a new mail account wizard, as a
checkbox for the user to pick whether he/she wants to add also contacts
to this account. This is a UI change.

I think using the OAuth2 is a good thing to do and even it could bring
some untranslated strings in the UI, it still worth it. It should be
better than waiting another 6 months for the change to get to the
users.

Thanks and bye,
Milan

Hello,
I forgot to commit a patch for [1] before the Friday release, which
adds a new translatable string "Folder: %s" into the sources. I
committed it now.
Bye,

Evolution: String freeze break approval plea

2020-08-31 Thread Milan Crha via gnome-i18n
Hello,
there is opened a merge request [1] against Evolution from a
contributor, which is quite simple (code wise speaking), but it
contains two translatable strings. One for an option name ("Started
Tasks"), the other for its tooltip (might be something along these
lines, even we are still discussing the final version "Filters for
tasks that either do not have a start date or the start date is earlier
than the time the filter is selected at").

I'd like to include the change in the 3.38.0, especially because it's
the contributor's effort, though the contributor filled the merge
request "too late".

Would you mind to approve it, please?

Thanks and bye,
Milan

Hi,
I meant to use gtk+ translation domain, but then I changed my mind. I
marked the strings in the borrowed code with special context and
committed the change before the Friday release (I thought it'll be
better to be done before the 3.35.92 release). I pinged Alexandre on
IRC before doing that.

Hi,
not exactly, the string is marked for translation (that's how the
translator found it) and it either needs a context or other way to
distinguish the meaning in different, well, contexts.

Okay, let's wait. I'd prefer to use gtk+ translations, but both options
work for me.

[evolution] Clashing string in translatable text

2020-02-26 Thread Milan Crha via gnome-i18n
Hello,
I've been warned about a string clash for word "Flags" in Evolution by
one of the translators. It happened when I copied gtk+' Emoji chooser
widget into Evolution sources (because gtk+ (3.x) doesn't provide it in
public API). The string is already used in Evolution in a meaning
"bit-or flags", while in the Emoji it's used like a "country flags".

I need to make a change, but I'm not sure whether I can do it without
an approval, as the code is under the string freeze.

I can think of two approaches to fix this. The first is to just mark
the clashing strings with context, but I'd say it's suboptiomal.

The second approach is to use the translation from the gtk+ package,
which is better, from my point of view (also because it keeps the Emoji
chooser texts consistent). It will also avoid unnecessary translation
strings for Evolution translators.

I've prepared a very simple patch for the second approach, I only would
like to know whether I can commit it, to not make life worse to
anybody.
Thanks and bye,
Milan

It doesn't change UI at all, neither it shows these texts in the
Evolution UI at all.

Hi,
the above is true. While creating mail acocunt you get basically only
mail, similarly when creating a calendar you get only calendar, and so
on, the collection account can group together all the types and it can
for example share credentials.

Due to lack of a better text I chose to use the same "Collection

Hi,
the above are two widgets, a label containing "URL:", which is also
marked for localization, and an entry showing actual URL being used in
the WebKitWebView below it, aka the URL itself, in the entry, is
changing during the process of the authentication and is not localized.

[evolution-data-server] UI/string freeze break approval request

2019-03-01 Thread Milan Crha via gnome-i18n
Hello,
I know this is awfully late, but I also believe this has a very limited
impact to all interested parties, including translators, documentation
and users itself.

I'd like to break the UI Freeze in evolution-data-server's
authentication dialog when using OAuth2, by adding URL line into
it [1]. It's only the

URL: [ https://accounts.google.com/signin/ ]

line in [1], which had been added. It's added, because Google requires
it to be there, which kind of makes sense, even for native
applications, though it makes the dialog uglier. The "URL:" text is
marked for localization, but I guess it's no big deal. Neither I think
this dialog is shown anywhere in the documentation (though I can be
wrong).

I do not think it's really necessary to have this done for 3.32.0, the
same as I agree that the timing, even for such small change, is really
bad, but I think it would be nice to have in the 3.32.0. I'd not ask
for it not being of the Google's requirement for it.

Thanks for consideration.

Hi,
okay. I see I've a hard time to properly express myself today. The
process as such works for me, I only tend to forget of basic rules and
then I cause such confusion like here.

> …that said, I don’t think “obvious” issues are any different to

Yes and no. Being pedantic, knowing of a typo in the translated string
and waiting for an approval for a day may mean that some translator(s)
will translate the string with the typo and then will need to
re-translate it again, after the typo is fixed, while those whom will
be "late" will translate only once.

I know, it's just how it is and it (probably) doesn't happen that
often. Let's keep the process as is, I'll try to do it right the next
time.

[evolution-data-server] GSettings key description typo correction

2018-02-26 Thread Milan Crha
Hello,
I committed a change for bug [793728] last week, where the reporter
claims a typo in a description of one of the GSettings key description.
I've been warned that I've been supposed to ask for a permission to do
the change at this late stage of the release cycle, but I hope it's
understandable to have the typo fixed, instead of giving users false
and/or confusing information.

I'm sending this email as a late heads-up.

I'm not sure how to proceed in the future. I know that the rules are
important and I believe I do my best to support translators work and
not waste their time. I also try to do my best for the users, but I
also do mistakes and typos like this, where the need for the
translators and the need for accurate information given to the users
intersects and causes trouble (and some paperwork overhead) now. I do
not know, would it make sense to just correct typos in such late time
and just give a heads up? After all, the translation in the sources is
used by the users too. I know I should not touch translator's files,
but there's an option to correct the typo there as well, thus such
changes might not cause 'fuzzy' translations (okay, this particular
change is easy, having other kind of typos, which may eventually change
meaning of the text, is definitely better to be dealt by the
translators, not by the coders). It's understandable that most of the
translators begin translation when the string-freeze period begins,
while they find such typos or issues in the translations only after the
string should not be changed, but it looks odd to have the default
translation wrong and wait for the next release to have it corrected.

I do not know, it's hard to make everyone happy, even when we are on
the same side, trying to provide as best user experience as possible.

Bye,
Milan

Hi,
I didn't want to diverge from the terms used on the portal.azure.com
site, just to make it easier to the users to pair what they see at the
site and where they fill it in the settings.

I already added some translator comment around the 'tenant' word,
hopefully useful for translators. I can change it, if needed.

Hi,
neither do I, that's just a term used by Microsoft. I didn't check what
they translate it to, if anything. I'll try to find it out and
eventually add the translator comment, if I find anything usable.

[evolution-ews] Two new translatable strings added for 3.27.91

2018-02-07 Thread Milan Crha
Hello,
I realized I missed some functionality before 3.27.90 release of
evolution-ews, which requires two new translatable strings, thus I
added them with commit [1]. The strings in question are:
   Tenant cannot be empty
   Application ID cannot be empty
Nothing else about translation or UI had been changed.
Bye,
Milan

Hi,
as I didn't receive the approval for the inclusion of the simplified
change for [1], I decided to unmark the two strings from translation in
gnome-3-26 branch (for 3.26.2+). It should not have any bad side-effect
for translators, from my point of view.

I did that, because I'm afraid more users will prefer to not have those
strings localized, while still using their preferred language in the
UI. I may eventually reconsider the whole issue later (for the
development version), but the current state is that the development
version is left untouched and the option to use or not use localized
Fwd/Re is available there.

Milan

Hi,
the same applies for 3.26.0+, that's why this plea exists.

That's what added the change above, yes.

Well, those are two different things (also see below). The "composer-
use-localized-fwd-re" bool option is there to let Evolution know that
it should use/add the localized version, as specified by the
translator, of the Fwd/Re prefix when creating a new forward or reply
message (aka when Ctrl+F/Ctrl+R is pressed in the Mail view).

> And I don't understand why it's up to translators to define a

Translators cannot fill "composer-localized-re", translators can only
define what the prefix might be in their language (which happened for
3.26.0, by tagging the strings for translation). The "composer-
localized-re" is to contain all the prefixes the user receives messages
with, thus for example some in German, Czech, whatever. It would not
make sense to need from every translator to define all possible
prefixes for all known languages.

The options look similar, but they are not the same.

I hope it makes it clearer.

[evolution] String freeze break plea for gnome-3-26

2017-10-13 Thread Milan Crha
Hello,
during 3.25 development cycle I made a change for [1], where I marked
Fwd and Re attributions for translation, as requested by the reporter.
What I didn't realize at that moment was that people in
internationalized environments might have problem with it (not talking
that the "Re" is part of RFC, which I missed completely). It stroke
shortly after those users begun to use 3.26 in locale which had
translated those strings. It resulted in bug [2].

I just committed a fix for it for 3.27.1 [3], but I'd like to add the
change also for 3.26.2. The original change contains also UI changes,
because I added a checkbox for it into the Composer Preferences, but
I'd like to simplify the change for 3.26 and include only translatable
strings in GSettings [4]. The default value for the option is not to
use translated Fwd/Re, which will fix it for majority of the users and
those whom prefer the translated strings can change the values of the
option manually or wait for 3.28.0.

I believe that regular users access GSettings/DConf only when told to
do it, thus these two strings [4] not being translated should not cause
any significant harm, especially in compare of the issue itself.

Thanks and bye,
Milan

[evolution] gnome-3-22 String freeze break plea

2017-01-17 Thread Milan Crha
Hello,
I'd like to commit a change for bug:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=776391
also into the gnome-322, but as the Evolution localized also GSettings
keys, then it breaks the string freeze policy. As mentioned, the new
translatable strings are only for the GSettings keys, thus shown only
in the dconf-editor or such tool, where users may not usually want to
go, thus I think it's pretty safe to make the change. The added option
is supposed to be hidden, it's not anywhere in the UI and is only for
the developers, but influences how the Evolution behaves for regular
users, in a not so great way. That's the main reason why I'd like to
commit also to the stable branch.

The added strings are:
 <_summary>Enable special WebKit developer features
<_description>The change of this option requires restart of the
Evolution.

I plan to make the final 3.22.5 Evolution release on February 13th.
Thanks and bye,
Milan

ouch, I knew I forgot something. I did know that I'm adding new
strings, I even know that I should ask first, but then I completely
forgot of it when committing to master and I just blindly committed it
to the stable branch as well. I'm sorry for that.

I'm CC'ing the relevant parties and doing the right thing now:

I'd like to ask for a string freeze break in the gnome-3-22 branch for
the evolution-data-server, where I made a change for [bug #771547]
"Internal Google OAuth2 authentication fails with expired token". The
change is somewhat important, because it fixes broken behaviour in
OAuth2 Google tokens handling. I added couple error messages,
translated (quoted above), which can show up in a user interface,
though only in a very very very rare cases, like when users manually
edit or remove the secrets in the seahorse. I didn't want to add
strings without being marked for translation (and diverge from git
master), thus I'd rather left them untranslated. I know this is pretty
late, quite close before the 3.22.1 release, but I hope you'll still
understand the importance of the change.

Let me apologize once again for my failure in the string freeze break
approval procedure, it really wasn't intentional.

Bye,
Milan
