gnome-control-center string changes

2009-08-06 Thread Claude Paroz
Hi,

I just committed a patch to fix
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=99759 in gnome-control-center.
This removes markup inside many strings.

(No copy to doc-list as this doesn't affect the UI.)

  Hi,

I just contributed a patch in gnome-control-center to use context for
  event sound names.
  http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=549489

I even dare to propose the new NC_ macro that will add some more msgctxt
  in the pot file.

I have a dream that one day this group will follow through the important
discussions with adopting a proposed compromise at the end instead of
silence and disregard for effort concerning reaching a real and viable
consensus. - You say I'm pretty naive? Yeah, it's like that, anyway...

Sorry, but I really think this should have been discussed before
introducing msgctxt into yet another module (that is evolution, GIMP, and
counting...). I wonder whether the ordinary translation (developer) comment
would had been possible to implement instead of msgctxt (at least for the
time being). For now, I think so. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

For those using poedit, double-check your po file with
a text editor if you really want to distinguish the two Logout and
  Desktop strings.

Thanks for caring, but note that the vast majority of translators most
likely don't follow this discussion or don't subscribe to gnome-i18n. So
they're turned adrift, so to speak. Moreover, it's pretty sad.

I hope all i18n committers are subscribed to gnome-i18n, and review
(even very quickly) the files they commit. I cannot understand why this
is such a burden for you, especially when we clearly announce the cases.

As far as I remember, the GTP docs don't require that committers subscribe
to (and follow) gnome-i18n. So yes, we can hope but then there's the
reality.

But depending on committers to be the ones supplied with appropriate context
is utterly a bad practice. I guess a good practice (in our
situation, i.e. some two weeks until the stable release, many unreachable
translators using momentarily unsuitable but improving tool, and so on, as
I wrote before) would be to use translator comments.

 I cannot understand why this
is such a burden for you, especially when we clearly announce the cases.

Hm, let's reverse the question: that is why this is not a burden for you.
Probably because you (and/or your teammates) don't use Poedit. And that's
it, Claude, my starting situation is just different.
