Well, it is brand new, and well-protected, so I think malware is a remote
possibility.
I will try the USB thing.

That would be a Gtk2 problem, not a GnuCash one. Of the packages you mention 
only GnuCash is still using Gtk2. The others all use Gtk3.

I suggest you try one of the channels described at 
https://www.debian.org/support .

Moira,

You have the attention of several different experienced GnuCash users from
various different backgrounds, and we all share your frustration.

Your experience does not match that of a typical user.  In my opinion there
is something unusual about your computer or how you managed to get the file
onto it with apparently different privileges than you have now.  However, I
am not an expert in privileges, so I cannot help you with that part of your
problem.

Another experiment that I can suggest is to try creating a new GnuCash data
file either on a USB key or in a sub-folder on your desktop, and see if you
can create a couple of accounts and transactions.  Try playing with that
for a while, and create and save a text file or a Word document.

Good luck and let us know about your progress.

above market rate of interest). If it pays the loan off early, what 
dividends can it be paying on built up equity?


As for the organizations, well when entering transactions often have to 
refer to emails (when I have to ask the person who submitted a receipt 
for reimbursement "what WAS that?" so I know the right expense account). 
So I want to be under the same log in that our email is.

I get prices for a UK fund from the mstaruk quote source using the ISIN

Yes, my user name is User. Should I change it (if I can figure out how)?

The folder is not read-only, but it does indicate that there are read-only
files in it that I can't find.

files can only be touched by an administrator.  You didn't specify
windows in your OP, it would certainly be possible on linux that the new
user ID would not have permissions to the files of an old ID...

I am the administrator for the machine.  I have Windows (10?)

I looked in the same folder as the data file, there is no .LCK file there.

Then that is not the problem; these files were created in another file
under a different user name; both machines were single user.

exists, and after that "Could not make a backup of the file
C:\Users\User\Documents\blahblahblah.gnucash" The changes don't save.

I exit by clicking on Save, and then when that is done, either clicking on
the X in the upper left corner or with File - Quit. Same results either
way.  I start the program from the descktop shortcut, but get the same
results when I open it from the Start menu.

No it doesn't have to be on your desktop, but for testing purposes it is a 
handy place that we know exists!

I probably missed this somewhere but is there anyway to get quotes on
Alphavantage for funds?
I am using the same fund id that I used on yahoo but get no quotes. This is
the ISIN code followed by .L for the LSE.
Also I successfully get all the company stocks quotes OK with the exception
of RELX plc (id REL.L)
