Interesting. And if its in the flathub website then it can be installed on
almost any major Linux distribution.

I didn't think I'd ever use one of these container things, but its starting to
make sense here.

Stop skipping the matcher. Import in small batches--one month at a time is a
good size--to train the matcher. After you’ve imported enough batches the
matcher should be matching most of your transactions by itself, at which point
you can make the batch size larger.

Re: [GNC] Alphavantage quote displaying wrong currency and value

2018-07-07 Thread Mark Blakeney
Chris,

Yes thanks. I actually discovered that myself later on. Obviously it was
picking up some other US stock called WES.

I find this online quote stuff needlessly confusing though. I fretted
trying to work out what to configure as the "Type" for my stocks given none
of the default ones (NASDAQ, EUREX, etc) seemed appropriate to my ASX
stocks. Also, that field is confusingly called "Namespace" when you look in
the securities editor. Then I eventually discovered the Type/Namespace
field serves no purpose whatever and can be configured to whatever you want
to make up! That field should be removed. Also, why is it required to
configure a timezone? The software is only after the latest quote price and
should be able to hide that complexity from the user.

Re: [GNC] 529 Help New

2018-07-07 Thread David Carlson
Khristine Ann,

Gnucash is able to track the value of nearly any arbitrary stock or mutual
fund portfolio, including downloading prices from the Internet as often as
you care to do that, up to once a day. That detail is probably more than
you need. There is a very detailed section in the Tutorial about how
GnuCash can do that.

I suggest doing one of two things.
Easy. Just set up a simple long term asset bank type account and every
three months declare some income or expense equal to the change shown on
your quarterly statement. You can still show contributions and eventually
disbursements.

Harder. Go to your library or community college and find an adult ed
course for beginning investors. Use that knowledge to set up GnuCash to
your preference.

[GNC] Imbalance-

2018-07-07 Thread Hmm
I have just installed GnuCash and I am importing Quicken (QFX) files from my
bank (chequing, savings, credit cards etc.) and I have a separate account
name for Imbalance.

How can I delete this or prevent it from populating in the future whenever I
download transactions?

Thanks

Hi Mark,

You need to add suffix ".AX" to the "Symbol" in the Security Editor.
E.g. CBA.AX
This tells Finance::Quote to use the price from the ASX using currency AUD.

[GNC] 529 Help New

2018-07-07 Thread Khristine Ann Ramella
Super clueless new Gnu User seeks someone to help explain 529. I asked for help
before and was directed to various places which gave a little insight, but not
as much as I need.

Here is what I have done:Created a Mutual Fund for 529 A and one
for 529 B—I believe I have done this right but it is open to debate since I
don’t understand a lot of the specifics required to open the accounts
(security/commodity?) Yikes!
  Created a cash
account to transfer the money out of my checking. Then I went in to the mutual
fund and made the purchase out of the cash. That seemed to go well.
The info on my 529 web site/statement and the ledger of my 529 seem to add
up/match in terms of shares, price paid-HOWEVER the totals don’t add up. My gnu
total shows for example 4503 , while my account online total shows 4392
Also, on my main gnu page instead of showing the total in each account, it
shows the shares and the account number and then the total is shown
(incorrectly as mentioned before) under mutual fund in general.

I have scoured the internet for videos, articles related to this and no luck. I
really don’t understand, but would like to if someone can explain in simple
terms. Open to email lessons or anything

Many thanks

Re: [GNC] Flatpack GnuCash v3.2 available in Linux Mint and flathub website

2018-07-07 Thread Les
Thanks for posting the Flatpack information.  I have a test machine
running Linux Mint 19 on an older Dell laptop.  I went to the Flatpack
site and installed GC 3.2.  The install went without a hitch.  I
transferred my latest GC file on my production machine running GC 2.6.21
and Linux Mint 18.2, to that machine and opened the file.  Everything
looked great except:

there are no totals for Assets, Current Assets, Investments and several
other accounts.  Also there was a $4.70 difference in Profits.  I
haven't taken the time to track that down as yet.

I really like the ease of installation that Flatpack provides.

Thanks,

Les

Installs OK and indistinguisable from my own build on my system. Can be
downloaded from the flathub site directly if you're not on Linux Mint.

The flatpack runs as /usr/bin/flatpack --b. Not sure how that handles other
flatpack software? This is my first flatpack installation. whereis gnucash
does not return anything so the flatpack obviously hides the installation.

The flathub version may be a good option for Linux users not interestedin
building from scratch but wanting the latest stable version. It seems to
distribute up to date Linux packages independent of the distribution
packagers, which some recent posters have been seeking.

Hi David

I have changed the text on usr/local. I haven't changed the title as it was
not immediately clear to me how to do that. It probably doesn't matter
