Ongoing . . . . .

I have now been through 8 monthly iterations of my newer Amex qif
importations. Still no auto account allocation generation as
suggested will eventually occur. (Yet my long-term Mastercard
account .qif downloads continue to import and allocate correctly.)

In my frenetic searching, I find this file: /.gnucash/qif-accounts-map.
It seems to be the memory source of previous transaction. It's a long
file that obviously has followed me over the years. In it I recognise
that, typically, the Mastercard allocations Line Description has
the correct account allocation recorded.

So I searched a recent Amex transaction that has twice previously been
manually corrected from "Unspecified" to it's correct Expense account
yet this is what is recorded inter alia:
("ROMEO S FOODHALL SUTHER SUTHERLAND" "ROMEO S FOODHALL SUTHER
SUTHERLAND" (9 8 0 3 4 2 11 12 5 6) #f "Unspecified" #f #t).

Sorry about the long preamble. ):

*1. Once designated "Unspecified" how/when, and by what means, does the
correct allocation be recorded?
*2. Is there a difference between manual correction while in QIF
Download mode and after Import has been completed?
*3. What do the numerals and #'s mean?
*4. Shall I upload the said qif-accounts-map file for you?

Re: [GNC] Backspace key stops working

2018-12-29 Thread Bruce Lang

Me too

Issue is when I enter a new transaction. It auto-fills the previous
similar transaction which is what I want but when I go to edit the
details - let's say I want to change a word using Shift-Back (or
Forward) arrow, it selects either a section of the words starting about
4 characters from the left and extending about 8 characters across,
rather than the parts of the words or whole words that I want to remove.
For example "if the first words are "coaching session" it will highlight
"ching sessi"), no matter where I have the cursor positioned in the
field when I depress the shift key. However, if I start typing from the
positioned cursor, the issue disappears... I can then edit as usual.

It's not a big issue... but irritating.

2018-12-29 Thread David Cousens
Christopher,

Agreed the balance sheet should really do the trick since it is the state of
the accounts at a specific point. The only difference you usually come
across is where intangible assets are involved as these are generally not
included in net worth whereas they are in equity.

Re: [GNC] Gnucash-created "closing" entries

2018-12-29 Thread Christopher Lam

That's the purpose of the current balance sheet.

Set price-source to 'most-recent' and it should calculate all
unrealized/realized (and trading) gains/losses, and add the appropriate
adjustments in the net worth calculator.

I'm not sure whether *any* other report will calculate these gains.

If these terms are somewhat unclear, then join the club.

2018-12-29 Thread Stan Brown
David, you're opening up several cans of worms! I started replying to
each point, but an adequate reply would be very long indeed. (I stopped
at the third page, when I realized no one could possibly want to know
than much about my finances, and I wasn't comfortable sharing that much.)

Let's just say that I had already considered the points you raised. I've
researched my tax situation, and I'm confident I understand it
correctly. Regarding accounting practice, I may or may not be conforming
to GAAP, but I'm doing what makes sense in my situation. (That's if we
overlook the fact that most people would scoff at my using an accrual
basis for my books but a cash basis for computing taxes.)

If I were a business, I'd agree with you. But as an individual, I like
to start each year with Net Worth showing my net worth at the start of
that year, which means all other equity accounts have been zeroed.

I read your reference, and I'm already marking to market, just as it
suggests. I do it quarterly, since that's when I get statements. But I
don't see a need to keep a multi-year account of unrealized gains and
losses, because for all my accounts the amount I contributed to them
isn't relevant to my tax situation. The market value _is_ relevant,
again even if unrealized, because that will determine the amount I am
required to take as RMD (required minimum distributions).

Under US law, gains and losses, realized or unrealized, in my retirement
accounts are not taxes as such -- only the amount I actually withdraw
from an IRA or 401(k) account is taxed, and that's without
distinguishing between what I invested and what I gained or lost.

In my non-retirement account, capital gains and dividends are taxable
even if unrealized. And it's retroactive -- I won't learn until the end
of February 2019 how much of those I must report on my 2018 tax return.

This is getting awfully long, again, so I think I'd better stop here.
But I appreciate your raising the points you did.

Re: [GNC] "Save Report Configuration" Crashes GnuCash and Truncates saved-reports-2.8

2018-12-29 Thread David Carlson
David T,

I am a little bit behind, as I am still using release 2.6.x where x ranges
between 16 and 19 depending on which machine I have fired up, so I am still
looking at a file named saved-reports-2..4, but I think that it is not too
different from your file.

I think you are aware that the file is is a text file which can be opened
by any text editor, tho some may format the output more read-ably on your
screen. I just looked at one of mine with gedit in Ubuntu and found it to
be quite readable, though the content appears to be computer code in the
language used to generate the reports. In the 2.4 version the accounts are
coded by reference numbers, so it may be possible that mis-matches would
cause issues if applied to a different data file, but I would expect
GnuCash to react docilely to most common problems in this file.

It does seem odd that, in your case, whatever error is present can actually
crash GnuCash.

I suspect that you are actually asking the developers to create a testing
tool to validate the file contents in the user environment and, if
possible, correct errors or isolate them to prevent further damage.
Probably such a tool is needed to prevent the damage that you are seeing in
your case from happening in production use. When to apply the tool and
whether to make it available separately to the user would be best decided
by the developers.

Also, a description of the format of the contents in some help file would
be useful to help in identifying problems with the file.

From Geert's reply just before mine, I infer that the file is processed
sequentially report-by-report so his suggestion should succeed in isolating
the error in this particular case, although the program behavior is far
from ideal upon encountering the error.

Re: [GNC] "Save Report Configuration" Crashes GnuCash and Truncates saved-reports-2.8

2018-12-29 Thread Geert Janssens
Hi David,

A very disturbing situation to be in.

I think the first step is to narrow down the possible issues.

So some of them are still in there ? Is the last one that's still there
completely stored in the saved reports file ? And what's the first report
that's not saved ? Do you see anything particular about this one ?

What if you remove this first report that's not saved from your original saved
reports file (after making a proper backup of course) and restore this
manually edited file. Can you now save your new report correctly ?

Regards,

Geert

It looks like you have submitted the same message twice. You shouldn’t do that.

Try taking a look at https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=796879
to see if the fixes mentioned
there help out.

Re: [GNC] A DIFFERENT Crash!

2018-12-29 Thread David T. via gnucash-user
OK. I think I that this problem has to do with opening a child window when
GnuCash is in fullscreen mode on Mojave. I can consistently cause this to
happen whenever I invoke an operation that calls a child window while GC is in
full screen mode. Examples: the Preferences window, or a report’s options. Both
will cause this crash.

I’ll note that this doesn’t address my longstanding troubles with the reports.

I have Mac Mohave 10.14.2. I downloaded Gnucash 3.3 and installed. Then I
attempted to open it. Went through the usual open sequence, said opening, but
does not open. Icon in Menu Bar, but does not open.

Hello,

Having just finished sending in my problem with reports crashing GnuCash, I

[GNC] "Save Report Configuration" Crashes GnuCash and Truncates saved-reports-2.8

settings have changed. Upon restart, I find that the saved reports have been
trashed, and the saved-reports-2.8 file is truncated at a fraction of its prior
size.

Further specifics: I am opening a saved report which is intended to document a
small subset of expense accounts. I have added a new subaccount to this set of
expenses, and I wish to add this new subaccount to the existing saved report. I
open the report (Reports->Saved Report Configurations) and then select the
options for the report. I click to the Accounts tab, add the new account
(CMD-Click) and click save. The new version of the report now displays. I click
on the “Save Report Configuration” button, and GnuCash disappears. There is no
further information displayed (i.e., I do not receive an Apple message about
the program ending unexpectedly, etc.). Neither does it appear that there is a
crash report; the only crash I can find regarding GnuCash dates from 12/18, and
today is not 12/18.

More disturbingly, when I reopen GnuCash, I find that my Saved Report
Configurations file has been truncated, resulting in a loss of most of my
reports. (Because I’ve had similar troubles with GnuCash trashing my reports
file, I have copies of saved-reports-2.8 stored in safe spots.) The
saved-reports-2.8 file goes from 182 kb to 34 kb. Upon restart, I have only 7
saved reports.

I reported this problem originally back in May 2018, and thought it had gone
away, but am again seeing it. I can consistently cause the crash now whenever I
try to save a report configuration using the original reports file. If I use
the new truncated form of the reports file, the error (and associated crash)
goes away.

Back in May, I asked whether anyone could suggest a way for me to examine the
saved-reports-2.8 file and determine what could possible be causing this crash.
It is untenable for me to keep having to restore my saved reports file, and is
annoying that I am unable to alter existing reports or add new ones.

If there are no solid suggestions to be made, I hope someone does have some way
for me to move forward; otherwise I will have to bite the bullet, write down
every single report I have saved, and recreate them in a new saved-reports
file. This is a colossal waste of time, but if it’s the only way I can move
forward, then it’s the only way to move forward.

With ‘bated breath,
David
