It is the latest MacOS.
Apologies, I should have said MySQL Lite ... this is included with GnuCash I
thought ?
It was an option previously ...

Re: [GNC] Unable to add prices to some securities

2019-03-19 Thread Adrien Monteleone
What OS are you on?

I think on Windows you have to install SQLite or MySQL separately. MacOS comes
with SQLite and I think (don’t remember) most Linux distributions do as well.
MySQL has to be installed separately for both MacOS and some Linux
distributions, a few come with it already and some substitute MariaDB. (older
versions of OS X, 10.6 at least, used to come with MySQL, but they moved that
to a separate installation some years ago.)

The are no other options in the drop down because those database drivers are
not installed on the machine.

Re: [GNC] Unable to add prices to some securities

2019-03-19 Thread Alan Taylor
Thanks Bucky but no joy, both with Yahoo and Apply.
After testing I do have a clue.
For the securities that are problematic, doing a manual ADD using the Price
Database window appears to be normal (using apply and ok) but at conclusion
nothing has been saved if looking for prices under the security in the left
hand window. For these securities, there are NO prices at all, just the
security name. However, the entered price IS used to update the default
Portfolio report, so it is going somewhere ?
Does not seem to be specific to any particular exchange.

Re: [GNC] Unable to add prices to some securities

2019-03-19 Thread Alan Taylor
More things not working properly …
In the Save As dialogue there is no way to select sql - click on the displayed
xml does not reveal any other possibilities
Also the price editor dialogue does not allow selection of a namespace. There
should be several, but it displays “All non-currency” with no other selections
possible.

Tried a reinstallation (3.4), no change.

Does that mean that you weren't able to get it to stay in the Dock?

Is it verifying every time you try to open it? That should happen only the
first time you try to open it after copying it to Applications.

Press Return

It means that you drag your mouse over the output with the button held down so
that the text is highlighted. Let go of the mouse and hold down the command-key
while pressing C. Open a reply email, click in it, then hold down the
command-key while pressing V. The text from Terminal that you highlighted will
be copied into the email.

Re: [GNC] macOS Mojave 10.14.3 cannot open GNUCASH

2019-03-19 Thread Chris Tsuji
   HI,
I am using Mac os 10.14.3
After I unstuffed GNUCash, I moved the entire folder, gnucash 3.3 into
my application folder and then restared my computer.
After the restart, i went to the application folder and opened the
gnucash folder and double clicked on the gnucash icon.
It opened okay and I had no problems.

I have not tried gnucash 3.4 yet.
   Hope that helps.

Re: [GNC] macOS Mojave 10.14.3 cannot open GNUCASH

2019-03-19 Thread John Ralls
Some users have found that dragging the GnuCash icon from Applications to to
the Dock allows GnuCash to start.

If that still fails, try opening /Applications/Utilities/Terminal. It will open
a window with a command prompt. At that prompt type
  /Applications/Gnucash.app/Contents/MacOS/Gnucash

copy any output after that and paste it into a reply.

Re: [GNC] Still can't update price quotes

2019-03-19 Thread Elias K Gardner
I think I tracked it down. First gnc-fq-dump alphavantage APPL returns
"This stock quote cannot be used by GnuCash!". Next I tried gnc-fq-dump
yahoo-json APPL and go the same error, however if I use yahoo_json with a
stock in my gnucash price database it correctly gives me the price. I have
a number of stocks so on David's advice I switch all of my stocks to
yahoo-json, tried to get quotes and got the same "There was an unknown
error while retrieving the price quotes". I then looked at each security
closer and found one that seemed odd and disabled it. I no longer get the
unknown error and my prices are up to date.

Thank you all

2019-03-19 Thread John Ralls
Please remember to copy the list on all replies. Reply all (the double arrow
icon) works well.

A dmg is a MacOS disk image file. That's the kind of file that we use to
distribute the GnuCash packages from Sourceforge and Github. After downloading
most browsers will open it on their own, but if your's doesn't you can find it
in your downloads folder and double-click it. It will open as a Finder window
showing a bunch of files including Gnucash.

You unmount by control-clicking with the mouse inside that Finder window and
selecting "unmount Gnucash-Intel-3.4.dmg" from the resulting context menu.

The process is to download the dmg, open it, and drag GnuCash somewhere; the
Applications folder is popular. After the copy completes eject the dmg then
double click the icon in the Applications folder. You should first get a dialog
box from GateKeeper telling you that GnuCash is something that you downloaded
from the internet, are you sure you want to run it? Tell that yes, then you'll
get another dialog with a progress bar called something like "Verifying

Re: [GNC] Saved report configurations

2019-03-19 Thread Roger Oliver
That worked. Thanks. You are correct, my intention was to experiment with
3.4. I thought I would try copying the stylesheet file to the test computer
as well. That did not work, I suspect because the picture file is not in
the test computer.

I take it that 3.4 will install with the Spanish accounting terms, etc., on
a Window 7 computer with the Windows language set to Spanish. Is that
correct? Spanish is not a language choice on the list when installing the
program but it installed on our working computer in Spanish anyway. That
was a boon for us.

Roger

The program looks good. Seems familiar and maybe a little easier on the
eyes.

Re: [GNC] Almost ready to give up

2019-03-19 Thread WestTown55
Hi,

I'm having the exact same issue trying to connect GnuCash with Chase. From
what I gather from this post, it's no longer possible to connect Chase with
GnuCash to automatically download the transactions. Is that correct?

Is the auto-download online banking setup easier with other banks? I have
Chase as my primary, but have been considering switching from Chase for a
while.

Thanks

Roger, just for reference, while the computer in question could certainly be
named ’TOSHIBA’ the file path you gave indicated this is the name of the
current user. (they may have been given the same name)

If you had created a user called ‘Roger’ then the path would be
C:/Users/Roger/.gnucash and the computer name could still remain ‘TOSHIBA’.

In any event, it would be a rare case to need the computer name to find a file.
(this might be needed if the file were on another computer on a network)

I never understood the need or benefit to differentiate simple vs. split

[GNC] Saving visible Accounts columns between GnuCash runs

2019-03-19 Thread James Walker
Hello all,

I'm very new to GnuCash and enjoying the program so far.

I've got a particular issue which I can't find a solution to after extensive
searching of the manual.

In the chart of accounts, I want many more columns to be visible than are
displayed by default:

[cid:image001.jpg@01D4DE4E.997CB810]

[cid:image002.png@01D4DE4E.997CB810]

However, after I exit the program, my customised field arrangement is lost. How
do you get the order and display settings of Accounts columns to persist on
save?

No matter what I select from the dropdown, all the non-default fields are lost
after closing and restarting GnuCash. I can't see any other method in the
interface to save the Accounts view configuration.

This is quite frustrating having to spend a minute each time I start GnuCash,
setting up the chart of accounts screen again...

Kind regards,
James Walker

Hi Roger,

If I understand correctly from your reply to John, the new computer is only to
experiment with 3.4. It will not be used to actually upgrade from 2.6 to 3.4 ?

In that case you can indeed copy the saved-reports-2.4 file to the new pc.

If you enter a Windows Explorer on that PC, and type
%appdata%\GnuCash
in its address bar, that should open the proper location to store the saved
reports file for gnucash 3.4 (provided you have run gnucash 3.4 before at
least once). Note don't copy the file there while gnucash is running. It may
be overwritten as gnucash closes.

Thanks Geert,

Windows 7. I found the file in C:/Users/TOSHIBA/.gnucash/saved-reports-2.4.
Out of curiosity, I looked for it on my Windows 10 computer and didn't find
it. I didn't see anything special for Windows 10 in the wiki. Not important
really as long as the update takes care of that.

You said, " If you want to force the migration, you should move the
directory aside before running gnucash 3.x." Will it work to copy the 2.4
file to the 3.4 directory? I saved the 2.4 file from the working pc to a
USB. I'm guessing I'll have to delete the 3.4 saved reports file, if it
even exists as I have not saved any reports on the test computer. I would
like to give it a try.

The file is called saved-reports-2.x where 'x' depends on your gnucash
version as does its location. For 2.6.17 the filename will be
saved-reports-2.4 and it will be stored in DOT_GNUCASH_DIR as described for
your OS (which you haven't provided yet) under
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Configuration_Locations#DOT_GNUCASH_DIR

For GnuCash 3.0 and up the file will be in
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Configuration_Locations#GNC_DATA_HOME for your
OS. GnuCash will look for a file named saved-reports-2.8 first in there and
if missing it will try to open saved-reports-2.4 in the same directory.

As for updates, if you update gnucash from 2.6.x to 3.x it will copy these
saved reports from the old location to the new one for you, but only if the
new location didn't exist yet! So if you ran tests on your new PC with only
3.x and then install 2.6.x on that system, the migration will not run again
after upgrading to 3.x. If you want to force the migration, you should move
the https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Configuration_Locations#GNC_DATA_HOME
directory aside before running gnucash 3.x.

Re: [GNC] Saved report configurations

2019-03-19 Thread rmomxtx
Thanks John,

I stumbled on the file on the computer we use for accounting in
C:/Users/TOSHIBA/.gnucash. By $HOME do you mean the name of the computer,
this case TOSHIBA? I looked for it on my Windows 10 PC but didn't find it.
Not important.

I only want to play with version 3.4 on the other computer to see if there
are any glitches I'll have to deal with. That sort of thing is time
consuming. The version we have installed is working fine so it is a
cost(time)/benefit issue. Don't want to spend more time learning and fixing
the software than we spend doing the work.

The filename is "saved-reports-2.6" in 2.6.17 and unless you're on a Mac it
will be in $HOME/.gnucash. Running GnuCash will migrate everything in that
directory to its new home and make any necessary format upgrades (for
example, that file's name gets changed to "saved-reports-2.8") as long as
the new location doesn't already exist. If you've already run GnuCash 3.4 it
will, so you should delete that directory after copying in $HOME/.gnucash
and before restarting GnuCash 3.4.

Hi Chris,

This part was new to me so it took me some research to figure out what's
happening.

The --device option is not meant for printers. It's for accessing controllers
or webcams. For printing flatpak provides a portal mechanism.

On the other side GnuCash does not handle printing directly. It relies on the
underlying toolkits to do so.

For example for check printing we delegate to Gtk's built-in print
functionality. Gtk is aware of the flatpak portal mechanism, so your printers
should show up if you try to print a check.

For report printing, GnuCash delegates the request to webkit's built-in
printing functionality (as we rely on webkit for displaying reports).
Unfortunately webkit seems to be unaware of the flatpak portal mechanism.
Hence no printers are listed.

I'm not sure if we can work around this in GnuCash or with flatpak command
switches. That is to be investigated. I have opened
https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=797146
to track this further.

Regards,

Geert

Re: [GNC] End of year rollover

2019-03-19 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Welcome to GnuCash!

There is a ‘close books’ procedure you can use that zeros expenses and income
to equity as ‘retained earnings/losses’ but you don’t have to use it. GnuCash
does not require that you clear anything out at the end of the year. (and doing
so can impact your ability to run reports in some cases)

There are people with 10+ years of data in very large files (with lots of stock
tracking) and other than some slow loading times, there aren’t any major
issues. (there are work arounds for the slow loading - somewhat)

Some people do a close books and open a new file each year. But that process
requires archiving reports and the data files. It also means you can’t run
reports for multiple years without external help (like from a spread sheet) or
you can’t run reports that cross yearly boundaries. (say from 4Q18 to 1Q19) And
if you want to look at prior year(s) data, you have to open each of those files
separately.

The Chart of Accounts tab has an available column for totals that show all data
in the entire book. (running totals from when you started using GnuCash) It
also has a column you can make visible for totals just for this accounting
period. (year) That way you can have an ‘at a glance’ view of your accounts
without running Income Statements or Balance Sheets. (but those are available
of course if you need them) The Summary Bar also shows current net worth and
retained earnings/losses.

My personal workflow is to not use the close books procedure, make the current
period totals visible on the Accounts tab, as well as keep open a YTD P, and
a monthly P for last month and this month. I run Balance Sheets as needed. I
also never close GnuCash except for upgrades. Thus I don’t experience the data
file loading but a few times a year. And it is still relatively painless.
(special note - loading is significantly slower if you leave reports open when
closing the app. They will be loading on re-opening the program which takes
some time)
