Re: [GNC] Bankrupt stock

2020-12-29 Thread dullege
Well, depending where you live, I think you might want to "dispose" of
delisted and worthless shares so that you can capture the capital loss for
tax purposes.

In the asset account linked to this one security ... I would create a new
transaction - for the Shares (where "" is the total shares you own),
and $0.00 for the price - that's it (ie, nothing under Transfer because
there are no proceeds, nothing entered in Sell).

This results in net balance of exactly 0 shares for the asset account linked
to the security.

You should then be able to scrub the account (to capture the capital loss
for the disposed shares).

I tried this just now it and it all seems to work.

Finally, you can hide the asset account if you never want to be reminded of
that bad investment again.

Why would you want to remove it? Use the Price database to set its value to
zero. The Portfolio reports will not include it unless you specifically
select it.

Regardless of their value, you still own those shares - and will always own
them. So you can't sell them - either in real life or in GnuCash.

I have mine set to “Anywhere”, which I would imagine is a superset of “App

I mount and open the DMG, then drag the App into the Applications folder,
opting to overwrite the existing copy. As far as I can tell, there’s no need to
“select all” and copy.

Re: [GNC] Printing

2020-12-29 Thread David Cousens
Gerald,

Printing is normally handled by the OS and not by GnuCash itself.

What OS are you using and what is the GnuCash version?
What are you trying to print?

Generally only reports can be printed out (and checks, invoices etc.). Under
the File menu item there is a Print Report (Ctrl-P) entry which will print
the report currently displayed in the main window to the system printer.
AFAIK this is context sensitive and become Print Checks when an account
register is being displayed. I would think if an invoice is the open tab it
will change to Print Invoice but I do not use the business features so I
cannot check it out easily.

On Linux, in my case, this is a network shared printer accessible via CUPS.
If the printer is accessible through the OS, web browsers or other
applications, it should also be accessible from within GnuCash. If not it is
likely a CUPS configuration problem

An alternative is to export the report as HTML, then open it with a web
browser and print from the browser.

per share and one with long-term capital gain of 20 per share.

Does this make sense or am I looking at it wrong?

You are looking at it the right way. That's more or less how I set it up
for "inventory lots" dealing with tee shirts sold by a non-profit but
not all lots at exactly the same cost. In that case, I was using FIFO
for the "cost of goods sold" part of tee shirt sales.

Re: [GNC] New user account setup question

2020-12-29 Thread David Carlson
Charles,

Welcome to Gnucash and the Gnucash-user mail list.

You are generally on the right track. If you follow the examples in the
Tutorial you will see that your brokerage account should not be a
placeholder type because it will be the conduit for funds in and out of
investment s.

Also, there is no need for a stock placeholder. It is best to commingle
lots within a security account for each symbol, so lots can be combined or
split as required. There is feature in Gnucash called Lots which is
supposed to automate lot tracking, but it assumes FIFO method, and
historically has been buggy, so I don't use it. I track lots manually by
assigning lot numbers in the notes field of each purchase and sale
transaction.

In closing transactions it is a little tricky converting unrealized gains
and losses to realized as there is no explicit tracking of cost basis.
There are different opinions on the best way to do that.

Have fun and ask more questions when you need to.

[GNC] New user account setup question

2020-12-29 Thread Charles Hudson
First post: Greetings to all and thanks for your help. Because I have
never used GNUCASH before, am unfamiliar with its reporting capabilities
and am only conversant with basic accounting principles, I have a couple of
questions about how to set up the chart of accounts. Briefly:

I want to track investments with some granularity. For example, if I buy
the same stock more than once - at different times and perhaps at different
prices - I will need to account for these differences when I sell. So it
seems to me that the hierarchy under Assets would be:

Investments (placeholder)
 > Brokerage firm account (placeholder)
 > Stocks (placeholder)
 > Individual security, e.g. "XOM" (also a placeholder)
   > Group or "lot" of stocks against which
transactions are recorded

So if I buy XOM at 50 in March and XOM at 60 in August and sell both lots
at 70 in October I have two lots, one with a short term capital gain of 10
per share and one with long-term capital gain of 20 per share.

Does this make sense or am I looking at it wrong?

Thanks for your replies.

Re: [GNC] ANNOUNCE: GnuCash 4.4 Released

2020-12-29 Thread John Ralls
Sorry for the bad URIs. I've corrected the direct links on the
www.gnucash.org/news.phtml and sent a correction email to gnucash-announce.

I made some adjustments and started a new Flathub build that should be done in
an hour or so.

https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=798067 reports a problem with the
Windows package failing because of a missing symbol in libpng. Has anyone else
had a problem with it?

Regards,
John Ralls

I’ve tried both options for the Mac included in Alan’s email, but neither
works:

Apple macOS:

https://downloads.sourceforge.net/gnucash/gnucash%20%28stable%29/4.4/Gnucash-Intel-4.4-1.dmg

The former results in a 404 error, the later gives me an error message
about 4.4.1 and offers me 4.3.1 instead

No rush to fix, but thought I should flag this up.

Hoping 2021 turns out better than its predecessor for all in the GC

Just try running it again - this appears to be a “feature” of MacOS.

I downloaded, installed and ran “Check and Repair” on all my books this
morning, but I did have to run the new version twice.

[GNC] Can't get GNUCASH to work on OSX

2020-12-29 Thread Ralph Musto via gnucash-user
HI all,
I have been trying to install GNUCASH on OSX 10.14.6 but with no success. New
set-up, fresh install.

After download and moving the app to Applications. When I run it the Icon
bounces in the dock for a second or two and then just disappears. No error
messages, nothing.

Anybody know how I can find out and fix what is wrong?

Thanks,

Re: [GNC] {GNC} How secure is Gnu-Cash? Good enough for a credit union?

2020-12-29 Thread David Cousens
Auditing for Dummies by Maire Loughran is possibly a good starting point for
the novice. It will require some understanding of accounting however.

Forensic and Investigative Accounting (7th Edition) 7th Edition
by Professor D. Larry Crumbley (Author), PhD (Author), CPA (Author), CFF
(Author), CrFA (Author), Lester E. Heitger (Author), G. Stevenson Smith
(Author) for a deeper treatment which will assume a detailed knowledge of
accounting.

The second is expensive but Amazon can have 2nd hand copies much cheaper,
particluarly earlier editions.

Any similar titles.

Thanks all, that's very helpful.

Can anyone recommend a/the go-to book that outlines (for a novice) those
really basic '100 years ago, this is what we did' controls?

@Adrien that's interesting and makes sense of the standard term in
association rules: 'the Committee must account to the association for the
use of its funds'.

I’ve tried both options for the Mac included in Alan’s email, but neither works:

Apple macOS:
https://github.com/Gnucash/gnucash/releases/download/4.3/Gnucash-Intel-4.4-1.dmg

https://downloads.sourceforge.net/gnucash/gnucash%20%28stable%29/4.4/Gnucash-Intel-4.4-1.dmg

The former results in a 404 error, the later gives me an error message about
4.4.1 and offers me 4.3.1 instead

No rush to fix, but thought I should flag this up.

Hoping 2021 turns out better than its predecessor for all in the GC community,

Michael

Problems with the links for downloading the Windows version. The GitHub link is
incorrect, and the Sourceforge link is still making 4.3 available for download.

The GitHub link should be :-

https://github.com/Gnucash/gnucash/releases/download/4.4/gnucash-4.4.setup.exe
(the first 4.4 was 4.3 in the original)
which does allow me to download 4.4.

It's possible that Apple macOS links will have the same problems, as they
appear similar.

Fully understandable, it looks like you had a bit of traumatic day John. Hope
you've had a good night's rest, after having your tipple of choice.

Happy New Year
