[GNC] Capital gains reporting - Australia

2021-01-17 Thread dullege
I'm recently using Gnucash to record personal share trading, including
commissions, and whenever shares are sold I use scrubbing to capture capital
gains/losses in some custom Income accounts (short term and long term).

These transactions are recording across many Asset accounts (one per
security), and in multiple currencies (as per the country/currency in which
the security is purchased).

In Australia, we need to report these realized capital gains during the
financial year (which runs to 1-Jul to 30-Jun here) . to assist tax
preparation by an accountant, I would normally create a basic spreadsheet
where each row contains

Name of Security, Quantity of shares, Date Acquired, Date Sold, Cost ,
Proceeds, Net Gain(or Loss)

Ideally the Cost and Proceeds should also include the commission charged (so
the Gain is net of all commissions), and the amounts converted to my local
currency (AUD).

So now I am looking for a gnucash report that might automate this process.
I was trying to use Tax Schedule Report (which I think is for US tax
preparation), which seems to pick up the gains for the date range (provided
I select the Income accounts for capital gains), but it is missing other
details (data acquired, date sold), plus it's insisting in converting to USD
(rather than using my local currency AUD).

Alternately, I am able to generate an "Advanced Portfolio" report, which
also does include capital gains (realized and unrealized), but it is missing
the date range for the realized capital gains, and does not seem to allow
me to filter down to a date range.

Just wondering if anyone has suggestions for generating this sort of extract
for realized capital gains with details of the relevant dates the asset was
bought and sold.

Thanks.

Bill

You can easily check the mru details by doing the following...

defaults read -app Gnucash

or

defaults read -app Gnucash | grep history

Of the 6, I have to confess that I read it too hastily and I don't have to
do VAT, so the VAT bridge won't be of interest to me.

But crikey, if you can't use GnuCash for MTD, it's not much use anymore, is

It looks as though the download of the Perl .MSI file succeeded but the
attempt to copy it to your %TEMP% directory failed (with the access
violation), so that when the install-fq-mods script trued to run it it
wasn't there, producing the "could not open" error you displayed.

You say you can "see the file it is looking for", by which you presumably
mean the PERL.MSI file in the %TEMP% directory. What is the file size?
Does it look plausible for the installer of a large package?

You could try running the .MSI file from the command line. If that
succeeds, then running install-fq-mods ought to mean it will find Perl
already present and proceed to the rest of its work.

BTW it is regarded as helpful to state the OS you are running on (clearly
Windows, but Win10Home? Win10Pro?) and which version of Gnucash
(presumably 4.4 for a new install).

Re: [GNC] Newby questions opening accounts

2021-01-17 Thread David Cousens
peter

A pretty fair summary.

On Q2. It is not so much a question of what GnuCash likes as one of standard
accounting practice. Not sure where your finance guy learned his accounting.
GnuCash implements what is known as a double entry accounting system. Every
transaction debits one account and credits another and the system of
accounts in general obeys a set of rules about the sums of debits and
credits in a transaction (among others) that satisfy what is known as the
accounting equation which defines the relationships between the different
types of accounts.

Section 4.63 of the Conceptual Framework of the IFRS (International
Accounting Standards) defines Equity as the residual interest in Assets
after subtracting any Liabilities against those assets. This is the same
definition as in GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Practice) which will be
found in the standards of most countries, even those who have not adopted
the IFRS formally at this stage (US for example).

If Equity accounts are held under Liabilities the balances of Assets and
Liabilities and Equity will no longer reflect the relationship Assets -
Liabilities = Equity. This is usually expressed as Assets = Liabilities +
Equity +Income -Expenses. Income(or Revenue) and Expenses are both also
equity accounts but only record transactions for the current period ( and
are called temporary accounts for this reason) in traditional accounting
practice and are closed to Equity at the end of the accounting period in
manual pen/paper bookkeeping.

GnuCash however does not require a formal closing in the traditional manner,
although it can be done if required, as its reporting system performs the
necessary calculations in constructing the reports for a given period.

While you have only counted 6 who have put up their hand so far, I
think that there would be far more interested in a usable system. It
doesn't include me, I live elsewhere.

But the CSV export already exists. See the "Income and GST Statement"
report which is definitely tailored for VAT/GST calculations for UK and
Australia but can be used for any similar tax regimes, and has a dedicated
CSV export facility. If your bridging software has particular requirements
for formatting the CSV input, the report may be amended as required.

Re: [GNC] Configuring Automatic Retrieval Quotes error

2021-01-17 Thread Geoff

Hi Denise

I am not sure why you have encountered that error.

As a workaround, you could try installing Strawberry Perl independently
from this web site: https://strawberryperl.com/

Once perl is installed, you need to run the "gnc-fq-update" script (also
located in the "C:\Program Files (x86)\gnucash\bin\" directory) to
install the perl modules required to retrieve online quotes.

[Background: GnuCash relies on another free software package (perl) to
access online quotes. Perl is not part of GnuCash.]

Report back here if you get stuck.

Hello,
I am just starting to set up GnuCash and want to set it up to automatically

don't know why access is being denied.

Can you help?
Thanks.Dee

2021-01-17 Thread chr...@floatdene.com
Good points. I have bridge software already working and approved by HMRC for
use. My initial thought was to have a report in GnuCash that generated the
VAT report for a period. There would then be a menu option to submit VAT.
This menu option would generate a csv file containing the VAT values for
submission. The bridge software is then invoked independently and submits
the VAT return to HMRC. As there are only about 6 users interested, it is
definitely not worth the effort!
