Yes I thought that would be the case, good luck and I hope you can work
something out that works for you.

But that would fail if there were multiple transactions on the same date,
which is the case with me.

I am using the business features, with vendors and customers. I know not
everyone does that, so perhaps that’s messing things up for me, that are
not for others. I am using GnuCash 4.12 on Linux. Il could try exporting on
a Windoze computer to see if that makes any difference.

Thank you. My transactions were entered manually, so I don’t have a strict
numerical input. However, I was aiming to input them in order, and doubt
that they were not input in quite such a random way.

I am pretty sure that I used first to last.

I thought that GnuCash would either sensible defaults for numbers if none
were specified. Although I specified the starting invoice number, I didn’t
specify the bill number initially, as I have not associated a number with a
bill in the past. I noticed that the export had no bill number - I expected
it to start them at 1. I did later set the starting bill as 1000, but the
bills are exported in a random order too.

Opening balances are randomly distributed throughout the CVS file too -
they are not all at the top or bottom like I would have expected.

I hope that I can resolve this issue, as it’s a pretty important one.

Re: [GNC] Gnucash on macOS Ventura

2022-12-23 Thread William Prescott
For what it's worth ...

I just started running the latest version GnuCash 4.13-1 on Ventura 13.1. No
real issues. I did have one momentary apparent glitch where it would not let me
scroll the drop down list of accounts when trying to assign a transaction line
to an account. But I just accepted one of the accounts I could see, then tabbed
out of that column. Then returned to it and it worked fine.

I haven't seen anything else strange and haven't used it enough to know if that
was some kind of one time quirk or repeatable.

Re: [GNC] What determines the order of transaction is CSV file?

2022-12-23 Thread David Cousens
Phyllis,
Export Transactions to CSV by default places additional splits on succeeding
lines. You can force a single line export with the split information on the same
line with one of the options in the export dialogue. as David H pointed out.

Re: [GNC] What determines the order of transaction is CSV file?

2022-12-23 Thread William Prescott
It would be pretty simple to add a column next to the date. Then put a formula
in the new column that made it equal to the date in the adjacent column if
there was one, and to the date in the preceding line if it was blank. Then sort
on the new column.

LibraOffice. However, even in Excel this would not work, as some lines have
no dates on them. Each transaction takes up at least two lines (a debit on
one line, and a credit on another). If there are multiple splits, then
there will be more than two lines per transaction. However, only the first
line of each transaction has a date, so less than half the lines in the
file have a date. If sorted by date, the first line of each transaction
would be in order, then all the lines with no date would follow.

Re: [GNC] What determines the order of transaction is CSV file?

2022-12-23 Thread David Cousens

Dave,

Not sure how you achieved that. I just exported one of my accounts and it
appears to be in date order from the first transaction entered (2015) until the
last (a few days ago). I haven't checked the whole file but the first and last
hundred or so transactions at each end are all in data order. My transactions
are usually imported from downloaded OFX files so they are generally imported in
date order. I used the first to last option in the export dialogue rather than
the date range. As long as the first date is before the last date that should
work the same though AFAIK

Re: [GNC] What determines the order of transaction is CSV file?

2022-12-23 Thread David H
Dave,

Probably doesn't help but I just did a test export and noticed there's a
"Simple Layout" checkbox on the first screen - doesn't export all the
splits and just has "-- Split Transaction --" as the description. Also
just has the following columns.

Cheers David H.

Date Account Name Number Description Full Category Path Reconcile Amount

Re: [GNC] What determines the order of transaction is CSV file?

2022-12-23 Thread David H
Dave,

Exporting transactions to csv means you get a lot of extraneous crap
with it :-) Depending on how much detail you need, it might be easier to
run a transaction report, filter on dates required, sort into required
order and then copy and paste into LibreOffice ???

Cheers David H.

Ouch. What about copying your date onto each line first? Sounds like
it needs major manipulation. I hope someone with experience can help

For reasons I don't know, it's quite tricky to do in my version of
LibraOffice. However, even in Excel this would not work, as some lines
have no dates on them. Each transaction takes up at least two lines (a
debit on one line, and a credit on another). If there are multiple
splits, then there will be more than two lines per transaction.
However, only the first line of each transaction has a date, so less
than half the lines in the file have a date. If sorted by date, the
first line of each transaction would be in order, then all the lines
   with no date would follow.

Re: [GNC] Backups

2022-12-23 Thread David Cousens
Elmar,

The storage locations are defined in the following wiki
page
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Configuration_Locations#:~:text=The%20usual%20locations%20per%20OS,to%20as%20%24HOME%20or%20~%2F
for all 3 OS types.

It just requires copying the files in these locations to a USB or other
location. On a Linux system the following will do it

cp $HOME/,local/share/gnucash DESTINATION/gnucash-use-config
cp $HOME/.local/share/gtk-3.0 DESTINATION/gnucash-gtk-config
cp $HOME/.config/gnucash DESTINATION/gnucash_config
cp $HOME/path-to-data-file DESTINATION

restoring it would simply be the same with the order of the locations reversed.

[GNC] What determines the order of transaction is CSV file?

2022-12-23 Thread Dr. David Kirkby
I exported a list of transactions, then opened them in the LibraOffice
spreadsheet. The transactions seem to be in a random order. Since they are
split across multiple lines, it would not be possible to just sort them on
the date column. I'm sure there must be some logic to it, but I can't see
it. Below is a list of the dates of the transactions. Is there a way to get
them saved in chronological order?

There's a few posts about this subject but I can't find any that provide a
solution. I'd like to know how to account for UK Flat Rate VAT.
EgInvoice: £1000+ VAT @ 20%: £200Invoice Total: £1200
Flat Rate VAT @ 16.5% of invoice total is paid to the government: £198The
remainder is added to income: £2

[GNC] How to generate Budget V Actual Report for Profit and Loss

2022-12-23 Thread davidvernonlong
I am trying to report an income statement showing actual against budget.

If I select an Income Statement report or a Profit and Loss statement report
I see the actuals for the period , but not the budget.

If I select Budget Income Statement Report or Budget Profit and Loss
statement report I see the budget but no actuals.

If I select " budget Report" and then under "options" I select only the
Income and expense reports, then I see both budges and actuals, the Total
Expenses and the Total Income, but I cannot find a way of see the net
income/loss Total on that report ( being total income less expenses).

At the moment my workaround is to copy paste to Excel

How to do?

Thanks

David Long

Re: [GNC] "Path Head for Linked Files Relative Paths" - per file setting?

2022-12-23 Thread Glenn Fowler
Meaning this is the only option available.
However, I think the best option in your case would be to either use an
external HDD or cloud storage that way the links will still work if you
have your accountant the drive or they can open the receipt in their
browser.

Hi

How does that solve anything? If you send your .gnucash file to your
accountant/taxman they won't be able to open any files because they're assumed
to be in

file://C:\Users\\Documents\business1\

and their is likely completely different (assuming they're even on
Windows) and additionally and additionally they might save business1 not
directly under Documents:

file://C:\Users\\Documents\Somewhere\Else\business1\

 Hi TA,

You are correct, it is global.

What I do is use "Linked Location" instead of "Linked File" and just enter
the path. For example:

file://C:\Users\\Documents\business1\MyReceipt.pdf

[GNC] "Path Head for Linked Files Relative Paths" - per file setting?

2022-12-23 Thread tuuranton--- via gnucash-user
Hello

First, the *question*: Currently it appears the "Path Head for Linked Files
Relative Paths" is a global setting applied to *all* .gnucash files. Is there a
way to turn it into a *per file* setting?

Here is why I want to do this:

I have many .gnucash files on my system located at various places:

/home/user/Documents/personal-accounting/pers.gnucash
/home/user/Documents/business1-accounting/business1.gnucash
/home/user/Documents/business2-accounting/business2.gnucash

(I put them into separate folders to make sure the automatic backups - tons of
files - don't pollute the rest of my regular Documents files)

But now I want to have "attachments" folders for each:

/home/user/Documents/personal-accounting/attachments/
/home/user/Documents/business1-accounting/attachments//home/user/Documents/business2-accounting/attachments/

I want each .gnucash file to use *the correct relative path* (so the path would
be e.g. "attachments/receipt.pdf") in each case. This is important because then
I could ship the *entire folder*, e.g.
/home/user/Documents/business2-accounting/ to my Business2 accountant or taxman
(for audit), and they'll be able to open it in GnuCash and have *working links
to all the attached files*.
