Re: [GNC] Search and Replace

2023-04-28 Thread David Carlson
Regarding search and replace, I wouldn't want to get too aggressive with
that in existing transactions, especially reconciled transactions. It
could easily overwrite intentional spelling choices. However, I would also
like to only have a limited selection of choices for new transaction s,
preferably correctly spelled, unless I use a lot acronyms meaningful to
only a very select audience.
Not knowing how to decide which suggestion s would be good, I don't see a
good way prevent bad choices from being included unless the user creates a
custom dictionary. That could get very cumbersome.

On the second idea, I would love to have an undo/redo feature similar to
the one in the office suites.

[GNC] Transactions in Placeholder

2023-04-28 Thread Fred Tydeman
My understanding is Placeholder accounts should have zero transactions in
them.

However, when I Import a QIF file, sometimes I end up with transactions in
a Placeholder account.

It would be nice if the importer would give a warning about putting
transactions into a Placeholder account. That way, I could pick a
different account to import into.

[GNC] Search and Replace

2023-04-28 Thread Gyle McCollam
Now that V5.0 offers choices when you start typing in the description, I find
errors in spelling and other differences in the way I've entered names. I try
to clean these up, but sometimes there are n excess of a hundred, because they
were repeated when earlier versions showed suggestions. In order to eliminate
V5.0 offering this bad spelling along with the proper spelling the incorrect
spelling needs to be changed. It would be helpful if Gnucash offer a llokup
and replace function. I haven't found one, am I missing it or doesn't it
exist. If not I will suggest it for a future enhancement.

While on the subject of enhancements, It would be helpful to have an undo and
redo function as in Libre Office and many other spreadsheet programs. I have
sometimes accidentally changed a transaction or eliminated what is in a field
and would like to exit the transaction with no changes. Is there a way to do
that now?

Thank You,

The book-currency feature was created 6 years ago as part of an ambitious
project that never got finished. It added several hundred unused lines to the
options code so I removed it as part of rewriting that options code in C++. I
thought that it wouldn't have gotten set in any books.

I've restored the feature to 5.1 so you and anyone else with the feature set
will be able to upgrade.

John Ralls

That does indeed to be the case. I just updated to version 5.0, and the
issues with some foreign currency transactions have now disappeared.

Re: [GNC] GNUcash 5 - Trial Balance

Thanks for all the input.
I am aware that both TB and Balance sheet are snapshots on a particular date

asking was only because my accountant had asked specifically for a TB covering
only the financial year that they were auditing the accounts for.

The TB report options are misleading as it does offer a date range. Maybe the
only solution to keeping my accountant happy is to close the books each year
(although according to the GNUCash manual this isn’t necessary).

The zero balances I was referring to were more to do with accounts that I just
don’t use. So the take home for me is that I need to clean up my account tree!

If you consider how "trial balance" used to be used, a "date range" sort
of makes sense.

In the old days, after a trial balance, a double line was drawn under
each account. The meaning of which was "in balance as of this point".
When searching for an OOB error, you didn't need to search before a
double line. It was in balance at that point, so any OOB now has to be
an entry after that point. Is the date range offered perhaps trying to
mimic that?

Like I said, I have not (bothered to) run a "trial balance" since BEFORE
switching to gnucash. A computerized bookkeeping application simply
isn't going to make the sort of errors a trial balance would disclose
(and help us find*). If there is nothing in Imbalance or Orphan, the
books are in balance. Yes, we could have made errors of the "put into
wrong account" sort but that would not be disclosed by a trial balance.
The errors a trial balance will disclose are things like the all too
common transposition of digits during manual posting from the journal to
the ledger. The computer simply won't make that sort of error.

Michael D Novack

* Examples (we had to learn all sorts of tricks like this) So the trial
balance is out of balance? By how much? Is the difference divisible by
9? Then look for transposed digits.
