Re: [GNC] reports

2024-03-02 Thread Glenn Serre
Good morning Dennis,

You could export your checking account transactions to csv for import
by excel using one of the File,Export options. I used to use this to
send transactions to my accountants. The export is modestly
labor-intensive, though, so recently I wrote a short python program to
automate my exports. I would be happy to share, but you may need to
compile gnucash yourself to enable the python bindings and perhaps do
a little debugging, as I only run Linux nowadays.

Re: [GNC] Moving from Quicken

2024-01-09 Thread Glenn Serre
Good morning Barry,

Regarding entering transactions into gnucash: I import QFX files that
I download monthly.

I migrated from Quickbooks and Quicken more than a decade ago (I last
ordered Quicken in 2008), and manage 7 small businesses with a total
of at least 12 checking accounts and a similar number of credit cards
(the business ones rarely get used, though). Every month I download
monthly statements and the corresponding monthly QFX transaction
records and other information from the bank websites and save them in
a directory tree. Every month, I import the QFX transactions from the
downloaded files and so don't manually enter transactions. I run
gnucash on debian linux.

I used to import transactions via the Online Actions (OFX direct
connect), but banks have been dropping support for OFX direct connect.
I find the download then import scheme to be no more annoying than I
found direct connect to be. For BMO, transaction downloads can be
initiated via an appropriately-formatted URL that I generate via a
short python program that I'd be happy to share. My main annoyance
with BMO is that the transaction records (in both statement and QFX
file) include very little detail. I address this with other python
programs, one to parse the zelle transaction emails that I receive and
another to parse json-formatted electronic transfer activity.

I have not even considered going back to Quicken.

Re: [GNC] Wells Fargo OFX

2023-07-24 Thread Glenn Serre
Good morning,

Here's a quick note on my experience in case it's helpful.

Summary:
Instead of OFX direct connect I use the various bank websites to
download transactions in QFX format corresponding to the monthly
statements. I think QFX is OFX with some minor modifications.

I have used gnucash with several banks for checking, savings, and
credit cards: Wells Fargo, Bank of the West, E*Trade Bank, Chase,
Capital One, Apple Card (whatever bank they really use).
Last year I made a concerted effort to enable OFX direct connect for
all of these, but I gave up after the first couple. I may have
written an email about it that is saved in the archives. My
conclusion is that OFX direct connect is generally not well supported
by banks and seems to be going away.

If I remember correctly, Wells Fargo is one of the ones that still
works (I don't bank with Wells Fargo any more). If you really want
direct connect, go to Tools->Online Banking Setup and give it a whirl.
If it doesn't work, my advice would be to abandon the effort and use
transaction download instead as I do. Debugging is reasonably well
supported in that you can set gnucash to write a detailed log file
which generally pointed me to what was going wrong. I'm not
remembering the details, but the instructions are on a gnucash web
page.
There are a few ofx client programs also, ofxclient being one I found
particularly useful.
The ofxhome website does not appear to be well maintained.

> I am curious about relative successes. OFX exchange is so important to me

[...]

I recently discovered that Morgan Stanley's cashplus account only
supports transaction download in Excel (.xlsx) format, so that would
be the one with the most trouble that I have seen. Otherwise, my
monthly download of transactions works reasonably well with the other
banks I use. The lack of detail I get in the transactions (Zelle,
checks, and direct deposit) is annoying, but that's not directly an
OFX issue.

Again, based on my experience I would say do something else rather
than use ofx direct connect.

I think you can do this with a linux machine using X and SSH port
forwarding (the -X or -Y option, but see the security warnings in the
man page).
You could probably also use Windows remote desktop.

That said, I have never been particularly happy with remote desktop
usage in recent times, even with fast connections, but it might be
worth a try. I suspect that developers no longer care much about
minimizing the traffic between the windowing system and the app.

Re: [GNC] GnuCash Tools>Online Banking Setup NOT working for me

2022-10-11 Thread Glenn Serre
Good morning,

To add to what Gyle said, even though I recently made a mildly
successful attempt to get aqbanking working with Bank of the West
(BOW), I have decided to stick with downloading monthly qfx files that
match my pdf statements. In addition to Gyle's reasons, what I like
about this is:

- OFX direct connect support for non-Quicken applications is iffy.
The old ofxhome info for BOW does not work, and I had to get the
client id from the quicken logs. BOW tech support was unhelpful.

- BOW seems to only support an old version of the OFX protocol (I was
hoping to get check images using OFX 2.0).

- The downloaded qfx files provide a way to reconstruct my accounts
should anything go wrong with my gnucash db.

- If I detect in the reconcile that I messed something up, the
matching statements help me resolve the issue.

- I suspect the client uid can be one you generate on first login, but
I haven't tested yet.
I tried generating a new one and using that instead, but the server
returned an error.
I will test out the client uid boundary conditions a bit with a different login.

- I will try to update ofxhome.com since it seems to be under new ownership.

- I will also attempt to update the gnucash wiki entry

- In order to get things working on my decades old gnucash data file,
I had to completely delete my old aqbanking users and accounts,
restart, then create the new online accounts manually, even though
lisiting the accounts worked. Using a brand new test data file was
smooth going. This is in gnucash 4.4, the version in debian 11.

I have had modest success with the python ofxclient program in that I can
download transactions from a specified account.
I have no luck yet with getting the account list via gnucash/aqsetup.

The Bank of the West ofx info is something like this:

url: https://ofx.bankofthewest.com/process.ofx
fid: 15130
app_id: QWIN
app_version: 2700
ofx version: 103

but when I try to get the account list in the aqbanking setup, I get this
back:

16:23:52 Sending request...
16:23:52 Using GnuTLS default ciphers.
16:23:52 TLS: SSL-Ciphers negotiated: TLS1.3:ECDHE-RSA-AES-256-GCM:AEAD
16:23:52 Waiting for response...
16:23:52 Parsing response...
16:23:52 Status for signon request: General error (Code 2000, severity
"ERROR")
Error other than those specified by the remaining error codes. (Note:
Servers should provide a more specific error whenever possible. Error code
2000 should be reserved for cases in which a more specific code is not
available.)
16:23:52 Status for account info request: General error (Code 2000,
severity "ERROR")
Error other than those specified by the remaining error codes. (Note:
Servers should provide a more specific error whenever possible. Error code

available.)
16:23:52 Operation finished, you can now close this window.

More updates when I am (hopefully) successful.

[GNC] Using aqbanking with Bank of the West?

2022-09-07 Thread Glenn Serre
Good afternoon,

Anyone have any luck using aqbanking with Bank of the West?
I tried the usual gnucash online banking setup and got a gnucash
stopped responding message with wait or force quit.
I tried ofclient but got authentication failed: timed out.
After I call customer support to make sure that my ofx access really
was enabled I plan to try quicken so I can harvest the connection log.

Any hints would be appreciated.

Thanks!
