Re: [GNC] Migrating from PC to Mac

2023-02-18 Thread Martin Taylor
Hi Adrien

Thanks for your reply
I am indeed up and running and because I only had a couple of saved report
configurations, it has been straightforward enough to simply recreate them ;-)

One slight puzzle is that from the Gnucash dialogue box, I can locate the data
file when its on the Mac in desktop or wherever, but if I move the datafile to
iCloud, I can’t find an option to navigate to that destination from the Gnucash
Open file pop-up box. Not a game breaker, and possibly just a configuration
issue, I can attach a screenshot if that was helpful

Let's change the question, and then you might see the answer.
 Because
your gnucash data file (your gnucash books) is just a special case
 of a
 more general "move between computers".

Let's say you have a file that is a document produced by a word
processor on your old computer. How do you move THAT to your Mac and
 how
do you then access if from the a word processor app on your Mac? Why
 do
you think THIS (moving the file that is your gnucash books) would be
 any
different? OK now? Note that if you don't know how to do this,
 moving
your gnucash file is just the tip of the iceberg.

Besides, Martin, if you are migrating from using your old computer
 to
this Mac, why do you want to move each of your user files (all your
documents, all your pictures, your book marks, etc, etc, (and of
 course
your gnucash data file) one file at a time? > Shouldn't you rather
 be
asking "I'm going from this non-Mac PC to a Mac.How do I migrate all
 my
user data?" Note that I am assuming (though you didn't say) that the
from computer is not also a Mac and is not running under a 'nix
 operating system.

Coy the data file from your PC to your Mac and open it with GnuCash
 on the Mac.
You could also store the data file in an online storage location

 can open it
 from either system.
If you have any saved reports you may also want to copy them See

[GNC] Migrating from PC to Mac

2023-02-16 Thread Martin Taylor

I’ve got 4.13 installed and running on my PC, and I’ve also set up 4.13 on my
Mac.

I’ve tried exporting the account tree and transactions from the PC to an
external drive and then importing them into the Mac but have struck a problem
with the transaction file where the importer doesn’t recognise the date format
or the data in the Deposit and Withdrawal columns, and nothing I’ve tried has
got me past that point.
The account tree seems to come across okay
I’m sure there’s another way to do this, would welcome any suggestions

Re: [GNC] How do I Upgrade from 2.6.12 to v4?

2023-01-31 Thread Martin Taylor
Made it to 3.11 successfully and all looks good so wish me luck for the next
step to 4.13!

I notice that I’ve lost the saved report configurations so I guess I’ve just
got to rebuild those from scratch once I land in 4.11. If I do it this way,
will I need to rebuild again once I’ve moved from PC to mac?

Martin,

Since your computer can run window 10, yes just download and install 3.11 then
run check and repair to verify it's all good. Check it out some and then rinse
and repeat for version 4.13. Godd luck moving to a Mac.

Good afternoon,

Reminder: The first step should be to back up your data if you haven't already,
especially if you are running on a dying PC.

[GNC] How do I Upgrade from 2.6.12 to v4?

2023-01-31 Thread Martin Taylor
Hi

I’m a not very technical user whose been successfully running 2.6.12 on my
dying PC for about 8 years (since the imminent demise of MS Money!).

I’m looking at migrating from PC to a Mac laptop and found that in the meantime
that several newer versions of GnuCash have been released.

I’m assuming that it would be smart to upgrade before I migrate to the new
platform.

Within 2.6.12 I can’t find where or how to upgrade to a new version. My guess
is that I simply download the latest version 4 for PC and then export accounts
and transactions from 2.6 and import them into 4. Am I on the right track?

Having got that done, I would then imagine that I download the equivalent
version 4 for Mac to my laptop and again export and import the data.

Fingers crossed that I’m sending this to the correct user forum and that
someone can provide me with some advice
