[GNC] re I need basic help

2023-10-25 Thread Neil Campbell
Hello Christopher

As a non-accountant (although I pretend to be one sometimes) I can't figure
out Dr/Cr except that Dr=left,Cr=right.

As a non-accountant, this simple way of looking at it may help with
understanding Debits and Credits.
You always Debit the receiving account and credit the parting account.
So, for example, If you run a cash business and you bank $100, the bank
received the money and you parted with goods or services which are called
Sales, so you Debit Bank and Credit Sales. If you have a Debtors system then
this same transaction would be Debit Bank (receiving the money) and Credit the
Debtor (parting with the money).

This simple test can be applied to any transaction and it works every time. You
will soon become used to the logic involved.

Hope this helps.

[GNC] Window/Mac Summary Box difference

2023-07-14 Thread Neil Campbell
Thank you all for your very helpful information on the data in this Summary
Box. Thanks for the latest info from Stephen and David.

BTW the Grand Total has always been blank for me. I now think that I have the
final key to solve the problem. I didn’t notice that in the Preferences section
of the PC app under Accounting Periods, that the Relative dates were ticked.
When I changed this to Absolute dates, it worked perfectly and the right
numbers are there. The Profit numbers do represent Income less Expenses but
this is based on the date selected for the Accounting Period. The Net Equity is
calculated for the current date which in practice is the date of the last
transactions.

Your prompt action to help me was very much appreciated. Thank you all.

Best regards.

If you scroll down in the summary box you will see additional rows
identified by the currencies and securities in that file, if any exist.
Perhaps that would lead to an account and one or more transactions that
contain an incomplete closing transaction where some asset or liability was
exchanged without accounting for the loss or gain. I too have no idea how
those numbers are calculated, so I cannot be more specific.

Thanks David. That doesn’t work for me. I don’t have any different currencies
or securities. Mine is really just a pure Bookkeeping exercise and both PC and
Mac have balanced books with no incomplete transactions.
As long as I know (and I don’t at present) that the Profit figures on the
Summary Box are of no real significance, then Adrien’s solution is just fine.
Strangely, the Mac figure ties up exactly with the profit to date this
financial year, but the PC figure is way way out.

Regards and thanks for your help.

Perhaps a Balance Sheet would work better. You'd only need to know the
headline numbers:

Total Assets
Total Liabilities
Total Equity

(perhaps, Retained Earnings/Losses, if you like, though that is part of
the Equity section)

Goo point Adrian. I was thinking that too, just as long as the figures in the
Summary Box really don’t mean anything.

Thanks for your help

[GNC] Window/Mac Summary Box difference

2023-07-13 Thread Neil Campbell
I help a friend with their monthly accounting. She has GNUCash installed on a
PC. I have GNUCash installed on a Mac mini M1 computer. She does the input. I
do the month end transactions and check her input. So we send GNUCash data
files backwards and forwards. The way I identify the file I have sent her is to
give her the Summary Box values. She must agree this before starting her new
month’s input.

This worked well until, for no apparent reason, these figures don’t match any
more.
My Mac mini M1 shows:
Net Assets £9,115.89Profits £3,075.18
Using the same file that I emailed her, her PC Shows:
Net Assets £9,115.89Profits £0.00

So I realised that there must be a Preference not set by her.

I downloaded and installed GNUCash on my wife’s PC to see how I could correct
the error. I changed the Setting Accounting period dates to the correct ones.
So, on my wife’s PC I have:
Net Assets £9,115.89Profits £8,803.24
It’s still not right and the Profit figure is now in red.

I now have 3 different Profit Figures, but I cannot find any place on the
Windows version to check why there are these differences, because I don’t know
where this Profit figure comes from. The correct figures are the ones on my Mac
mini M1 above.

I must be missing something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards

Re: [GNC] gnucash - Can't Save file

2023-06-27 Thread Neil Campbell
Hello Gyle

Thank you for that. Unfortunately overnight my computer (Apple Mini M1)
rebooted for some unknown reason and I lost it all anyway. But thanks for your
help. Yes, I did upgrade too soon, and should have known better. It was my
mistake, not theirs.

I just want to add that, like you, I am extremely grateful for the work done by
all the developers to keep GNUCash updated. I am a retired Accountant and find
it excellent for small business accounting which I do in a small way to help
small businesses get on their feet.

Best regards
Neil

Really? Please tell me how I can recover over 2 hours of work on GnuCash ver

Hi Greg

I didn’t believe you because I couldn’t find the right file in my list on
Finder. However, I tried what you said opening all GNUCash accounts even though
they were all called Income Statement May 2021. On the third attempt I found my
file and saved it with a new name. Also backed it up immediately! Thank you so
much Greg for taking the trouble to help me. I will remember this for the

[GNC] My data files have disappeared???

2021-10-16 Thread Neil Campbell
I am using GNUCash v4.8.2 which I upgraded to yesterday on a MacBook Pro
(operating system 10.15.7 Catalina). I did a months accounting entries for the
month of September and ran reports such as P - no problem.

When I come to use GNUCash this morning it automatically loads a data file, but
the last transaction on this data file is 31 May 2021. I seem to have “lost"
the latest backup (and the three previous months) plus everything that was
posted for June, July, August, September each month having about 200
transactions. I cannot find any trace of any data file later than 7 June 2021
on my computer.

Can anyone please tell me what has happened to my data files for the previous
months?

Re: [GNC] Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Tax Self-Assessment

2021-07-28 Thread Neil Campbell
Hi Mark

Thank you for all that background information which I found to be very
informative. I hear, and agree with, you about the complexity of UK Taxation
system and the practicality of this, but do wonder how the software developers
mentioned on HMRC website got MTD status. I expect all they did was to get
submission of the unadulterated records without year end adjustments etc linked
to HMRC via their API. I was not aware of the HMRC motives, so that was
interesting. From what you have said, it may be correct to say that the
existing P Report would be OK for this automatic return. It would just need
to be integrated with the HMRC system using their API. But I am not a
programmer, so I couldn’t do this.

I have put in an enhancement request for this change and will see what happens
next. Thank you for your enlightenment.

Regards.

2021-07-21 Thread Neil Campbell
Hi Maf

Thanks for the info. I also just scanned your link and it seems that GNUC would
need to incorporate the API to link with HMRC systems. I think this is the
aspect that I am asking if it will be considered for a future upgrade of GNUC.
I don’t know if there is a place to put this as a request, so if anyone reading
this knows, please advise.

Thanks again Maf.

Hi Maf

Thanks for your response.

Hi Neil,

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self-Assessment (known as MTD for ITSA) will
require all businesses and landlords with gross income in excess of £10,000 to
keep digital records from April 2023. Although 2023 may seem far-off, it’s
important to start preparing your practice and clients now.
GNUCash already provides digital accounting so there is no problem there.
Perhaps there will be a requirement to submit the quarterly returns mentioned
in the URL above with direct integration of digital accounts to HMRC returns.

Regarding Digital VAT, I thought that this GST in GNUCash applied only to
Australian GST. However, HMRC have a webpage saying:
HM Revenue & Customs
English Newid yr iaith ir GymraegCymraeg
<https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/making-tax-digital-software/hmrc-frontend/language/cy>
Find software for Making Tax Digital for VAT

GNUCash is not listed in their linked list of 12 Free Accounting software
packages, so I thought that it didn’t comply.

If you can find anything else to clarify this, please post to this forum.

[GNC] Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Tax Self-Assessment

2021-07-21 Thread Neil Campbell
From April 2023, new laws in UK will require all businesses with a gross income
of in excess of £10,000 to keep digital records for Tax returns. I think that
there are already laws in place for record-keeping and submitting VAT digitally
direct to HMRC. I am sure that there must be thousands of GNUCash users who
will be affected.

This may seem a long way away, but can one of the developers please confirm
that GNUCash either complies already (I can’t find anything in the Menu’s that
relates to VAT or the collection thereof) or the matter is in hand and GNUCash
will comply before April 2023.

Hi Derek

Thank for your prompt reply. OK. So I uninstalled the Gnucash.app with Clean My

[GNC] Gnucash won't load

2021-04-30 Thread Neil Campbell
Good morning.

I downloaded Gnucash for Mac and it is there in my App folder. When I double
click on it to load it, it gives a brief “sun-burst” but nothing happens. I am
using OSX ver 10.15.7 (Catalina). I have tried:

Loading it from Apps folder using Ctrl Click. The first time I did this it
asked me if I wanted to load the app and I clicked Yes. Then nothing happened.
No error message. No nothing.

Using the Terminal with open /applications/gnucash.app. This seems to run and
then just go back to the curser on the folder that was there.

Security & Privacy allows Mac App Store and identified developers and there is
no message there to say that it is being stopped from loading.

Finally I ran (in the terminal) /applications/gnucash.app and received the
following response Permission denied. I then went back to Finder and looked at
“info” under sharing & permissions and see that it says - You can read and
write.

I am a loss as to what to do next. Any help will be greatly received.
