Re: [GNC] latest gnucash release (3.1) feedback
Nice find. On the report start date issue, are you using a specific custom date or one of the presets? Mine are all set to ’start of accounting period’ and my book’s accounting period is set to ’start of current year’. I’m not seeing any loss of start dates. Perhaps some other date setting is where the issue lies. Re: [GNC] latest gnucash release (3.1) feedback
Thank you all, this gave me enough information to track down and create custom styling, having the tabs down the left side meant all the top and bottom margin and padding was just wasted space. Note: One minor issue I found when switching between 2.6.21 and 3.1 is that any open reports seems to lose the start date, no idea why. I’m on a Mac, was able to run the gtk3 inspector by running GTK_DEBUG=interactive /Applications/Gnucash.app/Contents/MacOS/Gnucash from the command line, which shows the various css nodes (and you can experiment with the styling). And created a ~/Library/Application\ Support/Gnucash/gtk-3.0.css for tight tabs: notebook tab { min-height: 0px; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; } notebook tab box { padding-top: 2px; padding-bottom: 2px; } I was also able to change the colors in the reports by changing the base_colors in /Applications/Gnucash.app/Contents/Resources/share/gnucash/scm/html-utilities.scm . Re: [GNC] latest gnucash release (3.1) feedback
I believe the tab scrolling issue is something related to Gtk+3, not GnuCash. I know it’s been talked about somewhat, but I don’t recall if there is a bug filed on it or not. (this would be a Gtk bug, NOT a GnuCash bug. Gnome just moved their bug tracker to Github so you’ll need a separate account there to file one.) Also, in 2.6.x, the mouse scroll wheel used to allow quick scrolling of the tabs if the mouse was pointing in the tab area, and that ability has disappeared in 3.1. Closing down 3.1 is also rather clunky. In 2.6, quitting Gnucash would just close the window and exit. In 3.1 it messes about closing each individual tab before closing the window. What's the reason for that, and can it be avoided easily? Re: [GNC] latest gnucash release (3.1) feedback
Stylesheets within GnuCash are for reports. They are very limited in customizability. (and it seems even some settings don’t work at all) Most advice I’ve seen on this front is to copy/paste or export reports to a spreadsheet or browser and work from there on making them ‘pretty’ as needed for 3rd party consumption. CSS for the GnuCash application is something else entirely. And those stylesheets DO work from first hand experience. General UI colors and fonts are customizable once you figure out which classes affect which elements. I’m not sure what’s up with the performance issues you are noting. I don’t experience them, but to be fair, my Mac specs are above average so I suppose mileage varies on that front. > On May 30, 2018, at 12:12 AM, Alun Champion wrote: > > MacOS High Sierra, Gnucash 3.1-3. > > If anyone finds a way for reducing the padding around the tabs (left), I > would be very interested. 3.1 uses almost twice as much space as 2.6.X. Re: [GNC] latest gnucash release (3.1) feedback
MacOS High Sierra, Gnucash 3.1-3. If anyone finds a way for reducing the padding around the tabs (left), I would be very interested. 3.1 uses almost twice as much space as 2.6.X. I keep a number of tabs open (reports, accounts, registers, etc.) and this comfortably fits on the screen now in 3.1 this forces scrolling. The arrows to scroll up and down are particularly slow and with also losing the ability to scroll the tabs then this becomes very awkward. Also it seems the stylesheets aren't working - or at a minimum there are no color changes between the stylesheets and the new colours are quite 'prime'. Changing settings also seems to be very slow, with quite a lag between selecting an option and for the tick to appear or disappear. I guess I will need to figure out how to change the styles - colours and fonts - default fonts for 2.6.X worked fine for me but the new fonts are too spidery. But still a fantastic piece of software - thank you all for such great work. -A. There’s no point in sending the crash report to Apple, but there is a point to sending it to us. Please file a bug report and attach it. As Adrien says, you can find it using /Applications/Utilities/Console under “User Diagnostics”. Control-click the report in the sidebar and select “show in finder” to see where it’s actually located. Re: [GNC] latest gnucash release (3.1) feedback
Anthony, I see what you mean about the tabs loading. I have the CoA, Receivable & Payables aging reports, and a Current Period Income Statement report on startup. Each load one by one after the main window appears. I just tested with my 2.6.21 copy and while the main window opened with everything already loaded, this happened because the reports were ‘built’ while the splash screen was still up. And it took much longer on 2.6 to build the reports than with 3.1. So 3.1 is much faster to load my reports, and the main window appears sooner. While I wouldn’t call it a ‘flicker’ it does appear different to the user. I normally don’t notice it since I started using 3.1 because I rarely close the application so I rarely re-start it. I haven’t noticed any sluggishness during regular use save for the context-menu in registers and invoices which sometimes seems to take a few seconds to ‘wake up’ and become active after appearing. I had a bug report on another issue with that menu so I suppose I need to file another to address that point. That crash report would possibly have been useful in a bug report or help here on the list. It’s probably still available from Console.app. I too had a crash right after using 3.0, but it turned out to be a mouse event that whacked the application and wasn’t a repeatable event. It ran fine afterwards. Perhaps it wouldn’t hurt to start a thread about your crash and attach your crash report as a .txt file. Re: [GNC] latest gnucash release (3.1) feedback
I had similar experiences with 3.1 on OS X 10.13.4 on a 2015 MacBook Air. My standard setup opens 4 accounts and one report, a version of Balance Sheet that presents an overview. With 2.6.19, they all open at once; with 3.1-1, they open in sequence (is there also a redraw in there somewhere?) which gives an impression of "flashing". My impression is that the colors/fonts/UI/etc are better in 3.1-1 (that is: they look great!) but the system is working harder to make this happen and so it "feels" less robust. (One bit of UI that I missed: in 2.6.19 a "swipe left" mouse pad gesture in the tab bar brings you to the left (or to the leftmost tab); 3.1 seems not to have this any more?) I had the "can't parse user file" issue with 3.0-1, and it went away with 3.1-1. I had a crash, though, which put me back to 2.6.19. I was reconciling each of my high activity accounts at beginning of month last week; the first two went smoothly; I opened the account to reconcile the third, clicked the Reconcile button, and GnuCash crashed "completely", just disappeared and stopped. The Apple crash dialog came up, but I wasn't sure if there was value in sending anything to Apple. No data loss, but concerning. Re: [GNC] latest gnucash release (3.1) feedback
You can tailor the colors and fonts to your liking using a custom CSS file. I’m not sure what you mean by ‘layout’ but the new Gtk+3 version does have more padding in many areas. I don’t think this is easily changeable, but it might be possible. I’m not sure what is causing your flickering issues though. (I’m using High Sierra on a Mac Mini and don’t see any such issues) Those would probably be worth filing bug reports over. However, there’s a good chance those are video card related and might not be necessarily solvable via GnuCash code. Do you use any other Gtk+3 apps on your Mac? (if so and those apps don’t flicker, then that would help to show it is a GnuCash problem and not a Gtk problem) Finally, note that there is a more recent version of 2.6, The latest out is 2.6.21. It fixes several bugs from that 2.6.19-1 release. (The 2.6.20 had some major issues precipitating the 2.6.21 ‘final’ 2.6 release) Regards, Adrien > On May 7, 2018, at 5:36 PM, Scott Cason via gnucash-user > wrote: > > I have been using Gnucash for a while now on a OSX laptop. [GNC] latest gnucash release (3.1) feedback
I have been using Gnucash for a while now on a OSX laptop. So far I have been satisfied with all its nuances. However, this latest release I am more than unhappy with. I don't know if my issues are the same between all OS' but as for my Mac I have gone back to v2.6.19-1. What I do not like about the new 3.1 is:(1) there seems to be a lot of graphics issues at launch,,, page flickers and windows flash(2) basically, I do not like the way the color scheme works; colored tabs almost makes it impossible to read the tab. this is unlike prior versions where tab color did not interfere with tab titles(3) overall, I do not like the new layout/color/font... the look is totally different and I do not like it.(4) Maybe if there weren't issues 1 and 2, #3 would not be quite so noticeable and I might not have even noticed.
