And here’s another bug report - this time with the XML backend:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=795804

Seems you are not alone.

Re: [GNC] 3.1 + Win10, TIME it takes to SAVE

2018-05-16 Thread Adrien Monteleone
I just stumbled on this bug report:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=796122

Is your data file in a shared folder? Is it local or on another device/machine?

As the bug report suggests, perhaps try cleaning up the data folder (maybe move
all but the main file to another location if you don’t want to delete them) and
see if that improves performance on the save.

If so, any additional info you can provide in the bug report might help.

Adrien

Re: [GNC] 3.1 + Win10, TIME it takes to SAVE

2018-05-15 Thread Adrien Monteleone
I guess the only questions left would be:

Are/were there any reports left open, or only the Chart of Accounts?

Was the file location moved or was it opening and saving from the same place as
2.6.x?

What backend are you using? Is it the same as with 2.6.x?

That should narrow down as many variables as possible.

Re: [GNC] 3.1 + Win10, TIME it takes to SAVE

2018-05-14 Thread randix
Immediately after the upgrade to 3.1 (I skipped 3.0), the backup was slow.
Went from virtually instantaneous to the 2-3+ minutes-- has not changed in
the 2 weeks since I upgraded. And I have an extensive backup system in
place.

Re: [GNC] 3.1 + Win10, TIME it takes to SAVE

2018-05-14 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Did you make a backup of your file before the upgrade and do you still have it
available?

I’d test with opening and saving it with 3.1.

If it saves in a reasonable time, then there might be an issue with the data
entered since the upgrade. If it’s still slow, then for sure, your copy of 3.1
has some issue. (or did you already notice this long save time from immediately
after the upgrade?)

Adrien

2018-05-14 Thread randix
Yea, well, it's a 6 month old Dell XPS 13 laptop, very fast. Before I
upgraded to 3.1, the saves were instantaneous, eg took a few seconds. After
upgrading, 2-3+ minutes for a simple save. No change in my hardware. Same
laptop. But thanks for the reply.

Re: [GNC] 3.1 + Win10, TIME it takes to SAVE

2018-05-14 Thread Adrien Monteleone
There are many, many more variables than what you listed. Note, you don’t
necessarily need to answer these questions for us, but they can all affect how
fast a save occurs, especially compared to someone else with beefier specs.

Here are a few:

Are you using a hard drive or SSD?

If it’s a hard drive, how old is it?

5400RPM or 7200RPM? (or something else)

This is Windows, so has it been defragmented recently? (if it’s a hard drive)

If a hard drive, is it connected via SATA or IDE?

Does the drive connection match the Motherboard connection? (an IDE drive
connected to IDE port, or SATA drive connected to SATA port, rather than a
mixed environment with adapters.)

If SATA, is this SATA I, II, or III? (different speeds of course)

How much RAM are you working with?

What’s your CPU and speed?

Are you regularly leaving other memory hungry apps running?

Are you regularly leaving other disk I/O intensive apps running?

The others who chimed in also don’t give their specs, so there’s no guarantee
of an accurate comparison.

But if your saves on the same machine are suddenly slower than they were, now
you’re comparing apples to apples.

Leaving aside a GnuCash problem for now, if this is a hard drive, I’d check the
drive health status and make sure it isn’t failing. Do other apps take
similarly long times to save?

Adrien

Mine takes 20 seconds for a 17MB file, and it seems slow to me.

So am I being punished for not helping that little old lady across the
street, last month?

Why would 2 users, both using the same version of the software, on the same
operating system, experience totally different experiences re saving a
"simple" file to their drive?

I guess I was lucky, cause when I was using the last stable version before
