Re: Could not obtain the lock
Hi, friends, Sorry for going AWOL - I couldn't put any time into this issue until the holidays. I have figured it out!! My anti-virus (a thing called Bitprotector that is provided by Best Buy, where I got the laptop) blocked guncash from doing something. I discovered this completely by accident, when I was downloading a movie from Cineplex and Bitprotector blocked it and sent me to a window to tell it whether to unblock it ... and there was gnucash also listed as blocked!! Bitprotector had never told me about that. So, I unblocked it and voila! Now gnucash works again. Whew! Re: Could not obtain the lock
Moira, You have the attention of several different experienced GnuCash users from various different backgrounds, and we all share your frustration. Your experience does not match that of a typical user. In my opinion there is something unusual about your computer or how you managed to get the file onto it with apparently different privileges than you have now. However, I am not an expert in privileges, so I cannot help you with that part of your problem. Another experiment that I can suggest is to try creating a new GnuCash data file either on a USB key or in a sub-folder on your desktop, and see if you can create a couple of accounts and transactions. Try playing with that for a while, and create and save a text file or a Word document. Good luck and let us know about your progress. Moira, Do you have similar problems with other files on that computer? Do you check it for malware regularly? It seems a little odd that you were able to place the file there without write permission unless you do have multiple users on that computer. I believe that others will concur that you do not have write permission in the folder containing that data file. Is your user name User? That is also why GnuCash failed to create a .LCK file. One small point, it *can* matter whether a file works on a single user machine or not depending how it was copied from one to the other. If a transfer was performed with something like a USB memory stick that is formatted using FAT or FAT32 then there should not be any problems as ownership information is stripped when using those storage formats. However, if the transfer was performed with an NTFS formatted memory stick or if it was a network copy that can maintain NTFS attributes then there will be a problem. Windows stores ownership information internally as GUIDs which will be unique across all machines assuming the user account was created directly (not enterprise user management). It doesn't matter whether the machine is "single user" or "multi user", every locally created user has a GUID that other machines won't know about. ___ gnucash-user mailing list gnucash-user@gnucash.org https://lists.gnucash.org/mailman/listinfo/gnucash-user - Please remember to CC this list on all your replies. Re: Could not obtain the lock
Moira, The lock file is always in the same folder as the data file and it always has the same name as the data file with the suffix .LCK Unless you are doing something very unusual, the files will be visible in your file explorer as long as you put them somewhere in your user folder on your local machine ('C' Drive) or on a removable device. How are you closing it? Also which operating system are you using and which version GC? Colin I'm using Windows 7. I normally close GC before turning my computer off. But I hardly turn it off more than once a week and the "incident" I'm refering to happens most every day. Re: Re : Could not obtain the lock
It sounds like you are starting GnuCash more times than you are shutting it down. GnuCash can open more than one instance at a time, which would cause the same message. Take care to return to the open instance rather than starting a new instance when you return, because it is possible to lose data from the first instance when the second instance is shut down.
