Hi Todd,

Never had any formal training for book keeping (just lots of practice!) Been
using GC for around 15 or 16 years now, for businesses & personal, before that
some version of Quicken originally released for Win95. (or possibly Win3.1)
I must have a bit of an accountant's brain, though, cos I seemed to just "get"
double-entry accounting straight away when starting with GC - although I do
still struggle to remember which side is debit & credit in a transaction.
Doesn't really matter for entering data very often, cos if i get the
transaction backwards it is immediately obvious in the register. It's only a
problem when posting on the list where there aren't existing transactions to
check against! Gonna try and apply Cricketonebit's tip on friday in your
other thread about "liking" debits and "being sad" for credits, and see if
that helps.

I use double-line auto-split ledger view by preference, but since you say that
you're not bothered about the other accounts and everything is lumped
together, I'm not sure why you'd need to see the split detail - I'd have
thought that Basic ledger was more like what you originally wanted as a simple
account overview?

Maf.

Please do not confuse QFX with QXF. They are different.

QXF is a Quicken eXchange Format -- it is proprietary and GnuCash cannot
read it.

QFX is a Quicken version of OFX, but follows the same SGML standard and

Re: [GNC] upgrade from 2.6.12 to 3.5-1 via deb

2019-04-15 Thread Adrien Monteleone
I could be mistaken, but I think his .deb is built against Ubuntu 18.04 which
would be Mint 19/19.1, not 18.3. (which is based on Ubuntu 16.04) If the 3.5
.deb *should* work on a 16.04 base, then there might also be an issue with Mint
having some packages in a held state for stability reasons or newer versions of
some dependencies might not have been backported to the older repos. They might
have to be downloaded manually, or repos changed first.

[GNC] Run GnuCash Upgrades Side-by-side With Older Versions

2019-04-15 Thread Greg Feneis
Win 7-64, GnuCash 6.2.21

Hi Folks,

Is there a way to install a new version without uninstalling the old
version? The install wizard doesn't seem to let me select the install
location, while it appears to require uninstalling the old version before
installing the new version.

Currently, GnuCash resides at C:\Program Files (x86)\gnucash\

If I had a choice, I might like C:\Program Files (x86)\gnucash\6.2.21\ for
my current installation, and C:\Program Files (x86)\gnucash\3.5.1\ for the
install I'm about to do, and so on.

Kind regards,

I am not familiar with Devuan.  The 3.5 packages were built by a debian
package builder on a Ubuntu 18.04 box.  The package builder was told the
list of needed packages so the installer should be able to detect which
ones are not on the system and install them for you.  It was built with
the 'trusty' base system set.  So if your distro is based on Trusty or
equivalent there is a good chance it will succeed.

However, make sure you have a rollback plan if it doesn't.

You need all three packages and install them all together at once.

I use:  sudo apt install ./*gnucash*3.5*.deb

Let apt install sort out the order.  However, I suspect common goes in
first, then python and then amd64.

Re: [GNC] Start up after shut down

2019-04-15 Thread davidbrown.rdps
Hello Richard, is it because history is being deleted on full close of the OS
and something else doing housekeeping? I use a small batch file to open mine
as I have different files for different account holders. It also changes the
basic files where reports are stored in the "users" folders to rename from the
unused files to those associated with each account holder. Only those reports
pertaining to each master copy are then seen. It saves loggin as different
user at strtup.

I have used Gnucash for a few years but have never figured out the best way to
shut down and open the next day with the proper files. I have to search through
the files and open several until I find what I am sure is the final file from
the day before.

It was built on Ubuntu 18.04 but the package building software was told
to build for a base system of Trusty.  I believe that is Ubuntu 14.04.
However, newer distros should work  I did that deliberately to not
freeze out users on the older distro.

[GNC] Convert from Quicken by date rather than account -- recommended?

2019-04-15 Thread Cricket Onebit
Would it work to go by date, one file per year or even quarter or month,
instead instead of by account?

Pros:
- Transactions with multiple accounts (eg transfers or "gift card + cash")
get done in the same session.
- Less confusion as to what's been done over multiple sessions.

Thanks,

Cricket / Sandy

Re: [GNC] Need help with a Savings account

2019-04-15 Thread Dale Alspach
A simple rule for getting the debit and credit correct is

money flows from credit to debit.

So if you want to remove $10 from the savings account that will be a
credit of $10 to savings and debit of $10 to some other account(s) such
as Expense.

Another reminder - the Bank’s use of “debit/credit” with respect to your
account is with respect to your account in *their* books which lies on the
opposite of the ledger/accounting equation from *your* books.

So when they ‘debit your account’ to decrease it, that is because *to them*
your account is a liability. (right side of the equation)

But in your books you would credit your account to decrease it, because it is
on the left side of your equation. (an asset)

And notice, that when they debit, you credit - debits and credits still balance
- even across books! (neat hunh?)

[GNC] Need help with a Savings account

2019-04-15 Thread ToddAndMargo via gnucash-user

Hi All,

Now that I am feeling brave coming off of creating a charge
card account, I decided to create a saving account.

My bank statement shows deposits as positive numbers and
withdrawals as negative numbers, so I decided to follow suite

Okay, I set the initial test balance to +100. It shows in
balance as 100. All is well so far.

Then I put 10 in the debit column of the account, meaning I
withdrew 10 from the account.

Problem: the balance went to 110, not to 90. What did
I do wrong THIS time?

No, debiting an asset account means you increased it. A withdrawal would be a
credit to an asset account.

Remember:

Assets + Expenses = Liabilities + Equity + Income

Left side of “=“ means ‘debit increases/credit decreases’

The opposite for the right side of the “=“

Re: [GNC] Transaction Report with ver.3.5 not working?

2019-04-15 Thread Adrien Monteleone
When you first run the report, it is blank, telling you no accounts are
selected with a link to “Edit report options” —click that link. (or click the
Options button in the toolbar)

In the Accounts tab of the options dialog, select the account(s) you want to
report on. I presume in this case, Expenses:Auto:Fuel or something similar
according to how you have your account tree set up.

You can optionally filter that set of transactions using the Filter By...
section. (such as only transactions from the desired accounts which perhaps
were paid in cash instead of check or card)

In the Sorting tab of this options dialog, set the "Primary Key:" to ‘Date’,
the option for “Primary Subtotal for Date Key:” defaults to ‘Monthly’ but you
can change it.

That is the minimum to get you what you’ve asked for help with so far.

You can then adjust other options, and click the ‘Apply’ button after each, to
play around with the results until they are to your liking. Of particular
interest may be the date ranges in the General tab, and the “Show subtotals
only (hide transactional data)” in the Sorting tab. If you have multiple child
accounts for “Fuel” and selected more than one to report on, you could set the
“Secondary Key:” there to ‘Account Name’ instead of ‘Register Order’ to group
the account transactions together within each month. (and even use the
“Secondary Subtotal” option to get subtotals for each child account within each
month)

Once you have a good option set you’d like to use again, you can use the ’Save
Config As...’ button to save the options to a custom report name. Next time you
want to run this report with the same options, use the "Saved Report
Configurations" menu entry instead of the generic "Transaction Report" entry.

Note, you don’t have to close the options dialog for changes to take effect,
just use the Apply button. This way you can quickly toggle and customize the
desired options to get what you want.

Regards,
Adrien

By "losing money", I meant money moving away from me.
From me (debit) to the bank

Because these terms ‘never make sense’, as seen by this example. It is far more
simpler to just say, money coming in, on the left, money going out on the
right… or is the other way around...

I will of course note that I was kicked out of highschool accounting class for
this and a few other reasons, namely I could give a rats ass about a few cents
of difference between the right and left columns, whatever the convention.

In the case of the bank, when I put money into ‘my’ account that is an
increase, and when the bank, at least in the olden days of savings accounts,
put in interest, again an increase from my perspective, and hence a credit to
that account for the bank’s ‘use’ of the money.

And if I dispatch dealing with banks, I sure don’t ‘owe’(debit) a cookie jar to
store my cash, and when I take money out, it sure is no ‘credit’ to the cookie
jar.

Re: [GNC] Need help with a Savings account

2019-04-15 Thread Adrien Monteleone
As Dale mentioned in another reply, money moves from credit to debit.

Do not think of the money as moving from you to the bank.

Think of the money as moving from one (or more) of your accounts to another one
(or more) of your accounts.

Everything is done within and from the perspective of *your* books, not someone
else’s. (sorry if my other reply confused you on that point)

When the *bank* says they are ‘crediting’ or ‘debiting’ your account, that is
from *their* perspective in *their* books. From your perspective, in your
books, you would enter that same transaction as a debit in that account. So
when the bank says they are ‘crediting’ your account, thus increasing its
value, that means their liability to you is increasing, because your account
with them is not an asset account, it is a liability account. (opposite side of
the accounting equation from their perspective) When they say they are
‘debiting’ your account, thus decreasing its value, that means they owe you
less, they’re decreasing their liability. But while the effect in your books is
the same (increase or decrease) the side of the ledger you record it on is the
opposite (debit or credit).

Let’s say yesterday, you started with $800 in your savings account and you had
$350 on hand in cash...

===
ToddAndMargo Balance Sheet (partial)
as of April 14, 2019

Assets
Cash$ 350
Savings $ 800
-
Total Assets$1150
===

Now, today, you move $100 from Cash (credit) to Savings (debit)

DateMemoDebit Credit
- - - --
4/15/19 Assets:Savings $100
Assets:Cash $100

When written Journal style it would look like this:

4/15/19
Dr. Assets:Savings $100
Cr. Assets:Cash $100

I indented the amounts as well, but they might not always appear that way in
textbooks and references. The distinguishing feature is the ‘Dr.’ and ‘Cr.’
prefixes to denote which is which.

(for some reason, convention has it to always show debits first, and usually to
indent all credits, but you can enter them as credits first if you like, though
GnuCash will likely re-order them to debits first upon saving.)

===
ToddAndMargo Balance Sheet (partial)

Assets
Cash$ 250
Savings $ 900
-
Total Assets$1150
===

As you can see, your total assets did not change. Your books remain in balance.
Money did not appear or disappear, it moved from one area where you held it to
another area where you held it. (it is still your asset) I didn’t need to show
the Liabilities or Equities section of the Balance Sheet because they did not
change and were not affected. (and we don’t even know or care about them for
this example)

From your perspective, the increase in your savings account *came from* your
cash on hand.

Now, let’s look at the Bank’s books for the exact same transaction:

===
'First Bank' Balance Sheet (partial)
as of April 14, 2019

Assets
Cash$ 800
-
Total Assets$ 800

Liabilities
   ToddAndMargo $ 800
-
Total Liabilities $ 800
===

So ‘First Bank’ as of close of business yesterday, has $800 cash on hand, and
they owe it all to ToddAndMargo. (sweet!)

This is how that *same* transaction above from your books, looks in theirs:

DateMemoDebit Credit
- - - --
4/15/19 Assets:Cash $100
Liabilities:ToddAndMargo$100

Or, Journal Style:

4/15/19
Dr. Assets:Cash $100
Cr. Liabilities:ToddAndMargo$100

As you can see, *your* savings account with them is a liability, and the
entries for it are on the opposite side of the ledger from your books.

===
'First Bank' Balance Sheet (partial)
as of April 15, 2019

Assets
Cash$ 900
-
Total Assets$ 900

Liabilities
   ToddAndMargo $ 900
-
Total Liabilities $ 900
===

Now, at the end of today, First Bank now has $900 on hand, and they still owe
all of it to ToddAndMargo, while their assets increased, so did their
liabilities. Their books still are in balance.

From their perspective, their increase in cash on hand, *came from* their
liability (debt) to you.

On two other notes, thanks, but I’m not and never have been a teacher, though I

For reasons that I haven't Yet figured out, AR and AP balances are often
incorrect on my Balance Sheet but are correct on the Payables and
Receivable Aging reports.

This forces me to recast the Balance Sheet in a spreadsheet using the
correct AP & AR balances. The math is basic but our company is on the
cusp of profitability and I'm having problem with the Balance Sheet
Report term "Retained Losses". Does this appear when we are not
profitable and what does it change to when we are profitable, as I
suspect we are beginning last month?

I much prefer using Retained Earnings with a negative number to present
accumulated losses and my recollection of how the Equity portion is
structured is something like the following"

Equity
Equity
Retained Earnings {based on Fiscal year end}
Income Y-T-D
Total Equity

FWIW, the Balance Sheet report shows Retained Losses of $38.61 but our
P shows Y-T-D income as $1,246.95. I agree with the P but where does
GC get the Retained Losses from?

Thanks for reading.

Re: [GNC] Equity Calculation on the Balance Sheet

2019-04-15 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Tom,

Strange that the AR/AP numbers would be different on those two reports. Perhaps
it is a date issue on the Aging reports. Make sure they would end on the same
day you are running the balance sheet for. The only thing I can think of that
might cause this would be bills and invoices that are posted to dates beyond
the Balance Sheet date and those aging reports are set to include them. (the
Balance Sheet won’t of course, because their date hasn’t arrived) If the
Balance Sheet is set for a date beyond all posted invoices and bills and so
your aging reports are ’thru’ the same date, then I’m not sure where the
problem lies.

Retained Earnings/Losses is a friendly shortcut of GnuCash so you don’t have to
‘Close the Books’ each year to get that figure. (this is the computer age after
all)

In this case, the net of Income-Expenses is a loss for now.

If you’d rather have an actual Equity account where you record Retained
Earnings/Losses, then as of the date for each end of year, perform the close
books procedure. (or close all income and expense accounts to that account
manually)

The reason your Balance Sheet is showing a different number than Net Income YTD
is that the Balance Sheet is ‘for all time’ not just this year. So effectively,
you are only $38.61 from becoming profitable since you opened the books in
GnuCash.

Essentially, this wouldn’t change if you used an actual Equity account here. It
would show "Equity:Retained Earnings" as "-$38.61".

Regards,
Adrien

Re: [GNC] Cannot retrieve quotes for some securities

2019-04-15 Thread wendiallen via gnucash-user
Yahoo as JSON works. Thank you. One related question... Since installing
the additional software for online quotes, a command window pops up for a
few seconds when GnuCash starts, as well as when I click "get quotes." It's
quite annoying. Is there any way to suppress it?
