Re: [GNC] Identify error transaction in QIF import

2024-04-28 Thread hh8923
Hi,

Thanks for the advice. I run Quicken -> Validate and Repair File and it
reported a few errors that I fixed.

However, I still get the same error message

Missing QIF investment action for transaction dated 9/19/2019

I opened the QIF in text editor and searched for 9/19’19. There are about 10
instances in a few banking accounts. Then all others are !Type:Prices

I have more than 20 years of records and more than 100 accounts. It will be
very difficult to do this one by one.

Is it possible for the error message to be more specific and pointing to exact
transaction?

Thanks

The first thing I did before I exported my 150mb Quicken file to a qif was to
run the Validate and Repair in the File menu under File Operations. Sometimes
the Quicken data file gets corrupted and you have to repair transactions. That
may help you track down if the issue is with your Quicken file or GnuCash.

I tried to export my Quicken file as a single qif and then import it into

In order for me to finally get my Quicken file imported into GnuCash, after ten

I had all the data exported. Then I imported each into GnuCash. I then had to

largely due to my unfamiliarity with GnuCash.

The bottom line is, one way to make the import easier is to stick to
exporting/importing one account at a time. When you then import the next
account, matching up transactions will be much easier. I also found that
having the account structure already setup in GnuCash, mimicing the same
account names and categories in Quicken, made the import task much easier.
Otherwise each time you import a file that wants to add a new account or
category to GnuCash for any undefined transaction account/category gets
extremely confusing.

Hi,

I'm a long time Quicken user and trying to migrate to GnuCash. I've
exported my entire Quicken file to QIF and then try to import into GnuCash.
Here is what I noted during the attempt.

Load QIF files

Line 627318: Could not parse price line: "#C093280",," 5/ 4'21"

Match payees/memos to GnuCash accounts

It listed about 10 that maps to Unspecified and I kept them as New selected

Tradable commodities

There are many and I did not review them. Exchange or abbreviation type
appear to be NONCURRENCY for all of them

New Book Options

I did not change any settings

QIF Import - Failed

Missing QIF investment action for transaction dated 9/19/2019

I have many accounts and many transactions. Searching the QIF file find
many with this date. How can I get the details on what to fix? Is there a
log file of import?

Thanks

It took a while to figure out why yahoo_json didn't work. When trying to fetch
the cookie from fc.yahoo.com the response was 'connection refused', also when
trying to connect via browser. In the end it turned out that pihole blocked
fc.yahoo.com. Once I added fc.yahoo.com to the whitelist in pihole, yahoo_json
works as designed.

Re: [GNC] Identify error transaction in QIF import

2024-04-28 Thread Joseph Keithley
I feel your pain, my quicken data went back almost thirty years. If there
is a more definitive description in some GnuCash log file for qif import
errors, I haven't found it. Hopefully someone with more knowledgeable on
the inner workings of GnuCash can shed more light on that.

I gather the particular sticking point is with either an option or futures
contract. I only have direct experience using Quicken with stocks and
bonds. I assume the process is similar for options/futures. I can offer
one more option for you to consider. Make a copy of your quicken data file
(your ".QDF" file) and open it with Quicken. Delete all the transactions
with the date in question. Then create your QIF file to import into
GnuCash and see if your file will import. Assuming the number of
transactions aren't too great you can then manually enter them in to
GnuCash OR create a QIF file or CSV file, manually, to import into GnuCash.

I found that if you recreate your account/category structure in GnuCash
beforehand the import becomes somewhat less laborious.

Hi,

The original problem was "The erroneous transaction seems to be the last of
those imported". If that's the case, it won't apply. What is shown in my case
is there is no investment transaction on that day and it's somewhere in the
middle of all the dates.

Also, in Quicken I can't find any transaction on any investment accounts.

Is there an experiment build available to test the theory?

Thanks

[GNC] Use 4.14 and 5.6 on same file (at different times)

Will I run into problems if I use both GnuCash 4.14 and 5.6 on the same

That is, 4.14 is on my current production Linux system and where I use

If I were to use Gnucash 5.6 to enter some data, and then switch back to

Re: [GNC] One LLC pay expense of another LLC

2024-04-28 Thread Ian Bellamy
Not advice but in accounting terms if LLC-b needs to raise cash it can be
done either through equity finance or debt finance.

LLC-b sells common stock at par (amount above par goes into Additional
Paid-in Capital account) to LLC-a in exchange for cash OR
LLC-a lends cash to LLC-b in the form of a note payable

You are correct that the balance sheet would be adjusted to account for the
new cash.

Not wise to mix up the expenses of separate entities (some would call this
"piercing the corporate veil").

Re: [GNC] Identify error transaction in QIF import

2024-04-28 Thread Kalpesh Patel
While this is not specific to the problem at hand (which others have provided
work around - namely fall back to GNC 5.5 which likely is to have better
success), given that I went through the migration while back (circa GNC v4.3)
to import data since at least 1993, these are the lessons I've learned:

Don't try to export as a one giant file from Quicken and import into GNC. I
highly recommend you do one account per export file and then import. If it
succeeds, make a backup copy of GNC file and go onto next one. The order of
import I suggest your perform is first the investment accounts with greatest
number of transactions as the very first one going down to least number of
transactions. Then do banking account, credit card accounts and finally any
other ones if you have. Optionally, once import is done, download transactions
from your banks, etc., as an OFX and import them. Not sure if you are in the
States or not but some of the large financial institutions allow you to go back
up to 10 years of downloads. You are NOT likely to succeed if you try to do so
in one leap...

Quicken's 'File-Operations'->'Validate and Repair' is not likely to help you
fix Quicken export errors. Sadly there is good deal of ambiguity in qif spec
which causes headaches. These sort of exceptions requires manual fixes. QIF
file is a text file and can be edited easily if you find the transactions that
is causing the issue (format can be found at
https://www.w3.org/2000/10/swap/pim/qif-doc/QIF-doc.htm#:~:text=A%3A%20The%20Quicken%20interchange%20format,that%20supports%20the%20QIF%20format.).
Divide and conquer is going to be the operations to find the transaction that
is an issue in the exported file - break up file into two; import one and if it
succeeds then the error is in the other file; divide that problematic one into
two again and continue to this path until transaction that is causing the
problem is found.

If anything, what is recommended be done in Quicken is to
'File-Operations'->'Validate and  Repair', followed by
'File-Operations'->'Copy'. Perform this at least three times but each time open
the new copy created by previous step. After the last iteration, you can rename
the '...CpyCpyCpy...' file to original name and then perform export one account
at a time as previously mentioned.

Before doing all this, export out the account tree from the Quicken. You can do
this in the QIF Export window by just selecting 'Account list' only and then
import it into GNC before importing any accounts and related transactions.

Also I suggest you look at the messages archive of this list and review past
messages on this specific topic. There is wealth of that info.

Hope this helps.

That should be OK.

GnuCash has a collection of "features" that reflect changes to the datafile
when a newer version makes changes that aren't backwards compatible. Once a
feature is set older versions of GnuCash that don't support that feature will
refuse to open the book. The features are enumerated in
https://github.com/Gnucash/gnucash/blob/stable/libgnucash/engine/gnc-features.cpp
and the latest requirement is GnuCash 4.3 so as of now that and all later
versions of GnuCash are fully data-compatible.

John Ralls

[GNC] Reconciliation oddity.

2024-04-28 Thread Tom Veik
I always reconcile my accounts to the penny and it has always worked
well for me in the past except today.  In my credit card account.  I
some how ended up with two extra charge transactions in my account that
shouldn't have been there.  Both had amounts equal to two other valid
charge transactions, and one had the description equal to the
description I use to make a payment.

Normally I would just blame myself for erroneously entering two
transactions twice, except that one of them had the description equal to
the description I use to make a payment.  Very odd.

During reconciliation everything seemed to go normally except for one
thing.  When check-marking one of the transactions that was duplicated,
there was an uncharacteristically long pause.  Two seconds maybe?

I deleted the two extra transactions and now everything seems to be back
to normal.

I think this sounds similar to a discussion here not long ago. Possibly
involving editing transactions during the reconciliation process, which
I did.  I tried to find the thread in a search but was unsuccessful.

Windows 11
Gnucash Version: 5.6
Build ID: 5.6+(2024-03-30)

By the way.  I love Gnucash and want to thank all those who do the
coding and offer support here.

This is an accounting problem, not a gnucash question.

Although I am adverse to giving business accounting advice, you seem to

I assume, of course, that there are separate sets of books, one for

When you say LLC-a paid an expense of LLC-b don;t you really mean that
there were TWO parts to these transactions? The first part affects only
LLC-a's books. LLC-a is making a loan to LLC-b << that it is for an
expense of LLC-b is irrelevant >>  So that would be creating an asset
account "Owed by LLC-b)" and you debit that and credit cash (checking,

liability account "owed to LLC-a" and you debit the expense and credit
this account.

Do you see that both books remain in balance?

Re: [GNC] Identify error transaction in QIF import

2024-04-28 Thread hh8923
Good news. The last stable build Apr 28 could import the full QIF file. It
took 9 hours but finished with some warning (those stocks that no longer
exists).

Now my question is whether I should wait for a released version – otherwise if
the build has some bugs it would be very difficult to go back and redo it.

Re: [GNC] Identify error transaction in QIF import

2024-04-28 Thread hh8923
Some quick check shows some account balance does not match – including credit
card or banking. This is a bad situation as I have to manually find what’s
missing. When the conversion finished, it only has warning of stock symbols.
What can I do to find what transaction was missed?

Thanks

[GNC] The equivalent for Quicken Tag

Hi,

I'm new to GnuCash. In Quicken, I use Tag a lot. For example, I create one
tag for each charity and set a single category for Donation and use Tag to
track charity. Search yielded discussion in 2017 as the latest when it's
not available. What's the latest status? If not available, what would be
the best way to handle the above example?

Hi,

This means a sub category for each charity.

Now, if we have c categories and t tags, in Quicken we'd have c*t number of
combination. Creating 1 sub category for each tag under each category will be
tedious. In Stack Exchange, some suggested to use Note or Label. But I could
not seem to find them in the registry. Is that possible?

Re: [GNC] The equivalent for Quicken Tag

2024-04-28 Thread Geoff

Hi HH

> This means a sub category for each charity.
No, a sub Account. GnuCash isn't Quicken and you need to change your
mindset to get the best results from using it.

> In Stack Exchange, some suggested to use Note or Label.
As I said, there are several solutions to this scenario, here is another
one that involves recording Notes on Transactions.

Open your "DONATIONS" account and from the main menu and click on View /
Double Line from the main menu.
Every transaction will now show an additional field under the
Description called "Notes". Enter the Charity Name or Code here.

Sub-Accounts are validated at data entry. There is no validation on Notes.

The scenario you adopt will also be influenced by the reporting you wish
to do. Experiment with the Profit & Loss Report, Transaction Report,
and the Find Transaction (Edit / Find or Ctrl-F) functionality.

Hope this helps.

Re: [GNC] The equivalent for Quicken Tag

2024-04-28 Thread Jim Passmore
How about a sub-account for each charity, as Geoff suggested, and *zero*
tags? Once you have the sub-accounts and use them, you can track the
charity by running a transaction report. Go to options, select Donations
and all the sub accounts on the accounts tab, and set the desired date
range on the General tab. Look at the other options while you're there to
see if you want to change anything.

When I do the above, I get a report of all my donations, grouped and
subtotaled by charity.

Re: [GNC] The equivalent for Quicken Tag

2024-04-28 Thread hh8923
I turned on double line and can see Notes. There is one more space next to it
but it’s not editable.

The example for Donation can be solved with several different approach. It’s
more challenge to solve the general problem. For example, there are multiple
sub-account under main Account “Travel”. The Tag is used to select the travel
destination. This creates a 2-D setup where you can track different expense
types for each destination.

Another question is when importing from Quicken export QIF, is there some way
to map Tag?

Is there a conclusion that GnuCash should not support Tag (a feature can exist
and people can choose not to use it as if it does not so it won’t create
problem for them while others can choose to use the feature)? Or is it matter
of lack of development resources? If it’s the latter, I wonder someone who
wants this feature can add it?

Thanks

Re: [GNC] The equivalent for Quicken Tag

2024-04-28 Thread sunfish62--- via gnucash-user
For your example, I simply use a report that subtotals by description. One
account (Expenses:Charity). Each transaction uses the charity name for the
description. Report Subtotal set to use Description. Report tells me each
charity and its annual total. Easy.

As for why this hadn't been implemented, no one has chosen to dedicate the time
and effort to do so. It's been that way since I started using GnuCash in 2005,
so I don't expect it to change. But, this being an open source, volunteer
effort, you're welcome to do so.
