I think the usual structure there would be:

Assets:Current Assets:Other Current Assets:Short Term Loans

You could then have separate accounts under Short Term Loans for each person
you’ve loaned to.

And as noted by others, income accounts do not enter the picture. This is not
new money. An asset is being returned to you. It’s just an asset transfer from
the loan back to cash. (or checking account, etc.)

Adrien

RE: Outgoing personal loan clarification

2017-11-02 Thread Tony Vanson
I set up a “money owing” asset
Transferred the loan amount to it from ‘bank account’
Transferred 1st repayment amount from “money owing” to “cash in wallet” asset
Works for me

Re: [GNC] House renovation Expense or Asset?

2018-05-11 Thread Tony Vanson
Thank you for your responses.
At this stage there are no taxation issues, such as capital gains, to take
into account as I'm living in S.E. Asia. I am just looking at a simplified
way of recording all expenses incurred in connection with the renovation.
I have an asset parent account set up as "House" and a sub-account to that
as "Renovation". I also have an expense account as "Home Repair". My
thoughts are that anything spent on Renovation adds to the asset and is
technically not an expense to be recorded as Home Repair? Am I correct on
this?

[GNC] House renovation Expense or Asset?

2018-05-11 Thread Tony Vanson
Hopefully I've posted this query in the right area - if not, please accept
my apologies.

My quandary is that, my recently purchased house, has an uncompleted
extension. I have now contracted to have this extension finished. I am
unsure how to record the expenses incurred in GNUcash.
I assume that when all the construction is finished, the total cost could
be assumed to be treated as an asset increase to the value of the house?
In this instance, would all additional expenses occurring during
construction be treated as a debit on my bank account but a credit as an
asset increase?
I would really appreciate some advice from any of the many knowledgeable
users on this forum.
Cheers

[GNC] My bad

2018-07-01 Thread Tony Vanson
Hi all,
On 29/06/2018 I backed up my GNU file.
I did some editing, entering additional transactions and reconciliations on
the 30th, and today, without realizing that GNUcash had opened up my backup
file instead.
Is it possible to rename the now up-to-date backup file to the normal file
I use, if so must it's log file also be renamed or can I open the backup
file and do a "save as", specifying the normal file name, without screwing
up anything.
Thanks once again for any advice.

How to account for a house purchase

2018-02-17 Thread Tony Vanson
Hi all,
Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction on how to account for a
house purchase in GNUCash.
I have contracted to buy a house and have paid a 10% deposit from my bank
account, with the remainder becoming due within 2 months. I understand that the
deposit amount is a debit against my bank account but I have no idea what the
corresponding double-entry should be. I assume when this purchase is completed
it will be an asset?

[GNC] Transfer column text alignment

2018-08-05 Thread Tony Vanson
Hi all,

I note that some years ago there was quite some discussion about the
inability to left-align text in the Transfer column of GnuCash.
I am currently using Gnu 2.6.18 on Windows 10 and cannot find anywhere if
this problem has been addressed and implemented since.
If it has, I would be most pleased if someone could point me in the right
direction.
Cheers

Re: [GNC] Forward payments

My thanks to all respondents. It is finally making sense to my befuddled
brain.
However I have one more spanner in the works. I had already transferred
funds from my Current Assets:Bank account to Expenses:Staff.
My Bank account has been reconciled.
What, if any, process is available to transfer the forward payment funds
from Expenses:Staff to the newly created Current Assets:Forward Payment
Credit account without messing things up, or would I need to delete the
original transfer and re-enter it to reflect the new process?
Thanks again for all your patience.

Re: [GNC] Forward payments

2018-06-28 Thread Tony Vanson
Thank you for your patience
Yes, I guess, in this instance, it could be considered as a type of
temporary loan for her to pay the bills. However, my thoughts are, that if
I change the current classification of Expenses:Staff to Current
Assets:Staff, when I pay her salary I'm decreasing an Asset (Bank Account)
but would also be needing to decrease another asset account Current
Assets:Staff. Am I wrong in assuming that this cannot be done?

By "transferred from savings to Staff Account" I meant when salary payment
is made (usually in cash) it is from my Current Assets:Bank Account:Cash in
Wallet with the offsetting account being Expense:Staff Account"

[GNC] Forward payments

2018-06-28 Thread Tony Vanson
Hi all,
Hopefully someone can advise me how to treat the following problem which
stumps me.
I am using GNUcash 2.6.18 on Windows 10.
I shall be away for several months and have transferred credit from my
Savings account to my Staff account with a lump sum amount for her to pay
her Salary, Electricity, Pool chemicals, Internet access etc, on the due
date. All these are set up as expense accounts.
All accounts, apart from her Salary and Internet access, are variable in
amount and payment date.
I assume that I have to split the lump sum to the various accounts as they
are paid or is there some other method?
I also need to take into account that the payment I've made to the Staff
account may be too small or too large.
Any enlightenment to a personally perplexing problem would be greatly
appreciated.
P.S. I only use GNUcash for my personal information and does not have any
taxation or other legal requirement.
Cheers

Thank you for your quick response. My Staff account is set up as an Expense
not as an Asset. In this particular case would I need to set up a new
account Current Assets:Staff - as a child account under Current Assets?

I've just upgraded from 2.6.21 to 3.5.1 for Windows 10. The upgrade
performed seamlessly with only one problem so far, it seems to have lost my
Saved Report Configurations from the previous version. Not too big a deal
as it's easily created again, or maybe someone has an idea if I'm looking

Re: [GNC] I can't see above the current widow

2019-04-29 Thread Tony Vanson
Hi Jonathan,
For the record, I'm using Gnucash V 3.5+(2019-03-30) and Windows 10
V10.0.17134 Build 17134.
I have attempted to duplicate your problem, with no result.
I can scroll fully up and down with the scroll wheel on the scroll bar, and
also when placed inside the body of all the registers.
Dragging the scroll bar up and down with the mouse also works for me as do
the arrow keys, both on the keyboard and the number pad. with the NumLock
off.
I may be way off base, but suspect more of an OS or hardware problem then
something to do with Gnucash.
Cheers

It would greatly help my few remaining brain cells if specific location
advice is available. Waded through a lot of the Wiki but unfortunately made
no sense to me.

[GNC] Compacted column

2019-12-09 Thread Tony Vanson
Hi all,
I've somehow managed to vertically compact an account column so that it
only shows as a thick vertical line and I cannot see what's in it. I seem
to recall a fix, to expand a column, some time ago but cannot locate it.
I'd appreciate some guidance how to restore the column width.

Windows 10
GNUcash 3.7

[GNC] Edit Cut and Copy greyed out

2019-12-13 Thread Tony Vanson
Hi All,
A problem that's just occurred in the last couple of days is that I can no
longer *Copy* or *Cut* a full line account item as both the *Cut* and
*Paste* in the *Edit* tab are greyed out and therefore unusable, however
*Duplicate* works OK.
I am using Windows 10 and GNUcash V 3.7.
I can select part of the line item at which time Cut and Copy become
available.
Is this a deliberate change or am I missing something?

No John, v 3.7 has been going fine ever since I installed it a few days
after it was released as an update from 3.6. I suspect it may have
something to do with the slew of Windows updates lately but I cannot
specifically put my finger on anything as Cut and Copy works OK on all
other apps. Maybe a reinstall of GNUcash may be worth while?

Re: [GNC] Edit Cut and Copy greyed out

2019-12-13 Thread Tony Vanson
Thank you David,
It is a simple split for interest I receive once a month and is credited to
my bank account - nothing complex. As I mentioned earlier, *Duplicate*
works perfectly well, which I hadn't used before, has less clicks and
appears more efficient, so no drama.
However it intrigues me why this problem should suddenly occur and I shall
try to ferret out it's cause starting with setting up a test account with a
couple of transactions to see if the problem remains.

A bit further to my mystery - the first time I open a register, and the
blank line on the bottom, with just the current date, is highlighted by
default, *Cut *and *Copy *are active and I can in fact use them, however if
I highlight a line with transactions, *Cut *and *Copy *are greyed out. In
all instances *Paste *is available? Any ideas welcome.

Re: [GNC] Edit Cut and Copy greyed out

2019-12-15 Thread Tony Vanson
Thanks Geert,
My understanding now is that 3.7 will not *Copy* or *Cut* a complete
transaction line whereas previous versions did.
A plus I got out of this is that *Duplicate* is a more efficient method for
my needs.

My sincere apologies to everyone for wasting their time on a non-existent

[GNC] New version does not retain resized columns

2020-06-22 Thread Tony Vanson
Hi all,
Just installed GnuCash 3.906 on Windows 10 and find that it doesn't retain
the accounts column widths. I set the widths by double clicking each
column's header and then pulling the left most Transfer column limiter to
the left and let it snap back. This it has the desired effect of resizing
the columns so that all digits appear but when I close and open the account
it has reverted back to the old widths.
Any clues please?
Cheers

Re: [GNC] Unhide column

2020-07-19 Thread Tony Vanson
Hi Alan,
I have a similar setup, though I only use Avast for anti-virus protection.
Instead I use the Comodo free firewall and have the Windows 10 firewall
disabled. At times Windows security shows a message that neither firewall
is active though Task Manager shows that Comodo is running, but I have
never had the Windows firewall start automatically regardless. The message
gives the option to start either firewall and I specify Comodo though it is
already active. and The Windows firewall remains inactive.
I agree that there is a possible Windows bug here that they are not
interested in fixing.

Re: [GNC] entry point error after recent automatic windows 10 update

2020-11-26 Thread Tony Vanson
Sorry to hear that. Does GnuCash actually become available? If so, maybe
try to right-click on the file and then select "Open" instead of
double-clicking it . Also temporarily disable any anti-virus you may have
installed ( some will not allow unknown executables to run). If none of
this works, I would have to assume that the installation is corrupt and
would need a fresh download and installation. Do you get any error messages
at all?

Re: [GNC] entry point error after recent automatic windows 10 update

2020-11-26 Thread Tony Vanson
Have you tried Greg's suggestion? An easy way to check if GnuCash starts
from the command, copy and paste the following into the Windows 10 search
box (the magnifying glass icon on the bottom left of your screen)
"C:\Program Files (x86)\gnucash\bin\gnucash.exe" (without the quotes). This
will bring up the GnuCash executable. which if you double-click on it will
start GnuCash - or not.

[GNC] How to treat accommodation security deposit

2020-11-22 Thread Tony Vanson
Hi all,
Using Windows 10 Home
GC 4.2

I anticipate renting a property for 1 month and will pay the rental up
front plus a security deposit amount which will be returned at the finish
of the rental period. I am totally in the dark how to approach this.
Do I need some kind of split? The rental expense is a straight forward
expense, but how do I input the security deposit - I tried it as an asset
but that didn't work and doesn't seem right. Various other things i tried
usually came up with an Imbalance entry.
I would really appreciate some guidance on this.
Cheers

Re: [GNC] Strange behaviour

2020-11-16 Thread Tony Vanson
Yes, same problem here on Windows 10 Home with Gnucash 4.2.
I used to just copy and paste a previous entry, alter the amount as
required, and then commit. However this now causes CNC to completely shut
down, but I find if I commit the wrong amount and then alter it, things are
fine.

Re: [GNC] Strange behaviour

2020-11-16 Thread Tony Vanson
Seems that the comma separator is the culprit here if it is left in when
committing the altered amount. In addition I find that if I use the
backspace key to try to alter a number before committing, GnuCash shuts
down immediately, however using the backspace to delete the comma separator
works fine.
Bit more digging to do.

Re: [GNC] How to treat accommodation security deposit

2020-11-22 Thread Tony Vanson
Thanks Geoff,
I've never been able to get my head around "splits" but your method seems
straightforward - sort of 樂.
I'll give it a shot.
As I have no need for anything official, I guess I can always just manually
enter the three entries separately.
Cheers

Thanks guys for the useful info.
I've temporarily gone the quick and ugly route by using separate entries
while I mess around with getting up to speed with "splits" as it applies to
my problem.

[GNC] Wrong numeric separators in new file

2021-02-28 Thread Tony Vanson
Hi All,

On Windows 10 and Gnucash 4.4
After a catastrophic failure of my laptop, which also took out my external
backup drive, I found a 2 year old backup on another drive.
The data loss is not a huge problem as it is solely for my own use.
I closed that old file and used it to create a new file hierarchy with
every account in the new file showing zero - all good.
However I notice when entering amounts now that the thousands separator is
a decimal point and the decimal point is a comma e.g. $10.000.000,00.
I've dug around some but haven't been able to find where I can change the
separators.
Any advice is much appreciated
Cheers

[GNC] Accounting for a pre-paid electronic toll card

2022-10-18 Thread Tony Vanson
I'm hoping that someone on this list can aid my befuddled brain to get to
grips with my problem.
The tolling system here is not the automated ones I'm used to.
Here one needs to obtain an electronic card and, once done, must be charged
with a cash value prior to travelling and topped up with cash on a regular
basis.
My question is what category is this card and how do I treat additions and
subtractions from it?
I initially thought it might be treated as a credit card but the way it
operates it's obviously not.
Any advice would be much appreciated

[GNC] Customizing appearance of parent accounts only in Accounts tree

2023-12-01 Thread Tony Vanson
Hi all,

I'm using Windows 11 and GNUcash 5.4
I'm wondering if there is an easy possibility of highlighting parent
accounts only, by text size, bolding and/or coloring, to make them stand
out when scrolling the accounts tree?

Thanks for your answer, but no, basically I just wanted to highlight the
Parent account only(Placeholder mostly) by a larger font size and bolded in
black.
Cheers
