[GOAL] Question why journals in DOAJ are being listed as 'Australian'

2014-03-25 Thread Danny Kingsley
Hello all,

I recently looked at the DOAJ list of Australian journals to determine how many
Australian OA journals charge an APC. Of the list of 115 journals on the DOAJ,
12 charge an APC.

However on investigation seven of these 12 do not appear to be Australian
journals at all.

There is no definitive list of Australian OA journals - the AOASG page
http://aoasg.org.au/open-access-in-action/australian-oa-journals/ lists 150
(compared to the smaller DOAJ list) and before I investigated this it did not
include the five genuinely OA Australian journals that charge an APC.

My questions are:

* Does anyone know why these journals would be appearing on DOAJ as
'Australian'?

* Five of them are published by Ivyspring International Publishers -
does anyone know anything about this publisher?

Thanks

Danny

[GOAL] Nordic Council of Ministers launches new e-collection Press Release 26 March

2014-03-25 Thread Niels Stern
PRESS RELEASE 26 MARCH 2014

If you want a Nordic perspective on green growth, welfare, health or the
climate, the Nordic Council of Ministers' (NCM) new e-collection -
http://norden.diva-portal.org - is a good place to start.

Launched today, the e-collection provides access to some 3,000 Nordic
publications free to download.

For example, the 627-page scientific work Nordic Nutrition
Recommendationshttp://norden.diva-portal.org/smash/record.jsf?searchId=4pid=diva2:704251,
the cornerstone of dietary guidelines in the Nordic countries, is due out
tomorrow in book form but is already available in the new e-collection as a
free download.

Open Access
The new platform for the e-collection has been developed by Uppsala University
Library and is based on Open Source software. It complements the Open Access
mandate that the NCM has bestowed upon its Secretary General, Dagfinn Høybråten.

The mandate includes a requirement that all publications published and funded
by the NCM's Secretariat and institutions will in future be Open Access, i.e.
as a minimum available as free downloads.

This step has been taken to improve access to the many hundreds of publications
that the NCM publishes every year, and to send a clear signal to the world that
we in the Nordic Region support democratic principles such as transparency and
equal access for all, in deeds as well as in words.

Facts
The Nordic Council of Ministers is responsible for inter-governmental
co-operation in the Nordic Region and has an annual budget of just under DKK 1
billion. As well as its Secretariat in Copenhagen, the NCM has 16 offices and
institutions and works with whole host of other organisations.

[GOAL] I dropped the “NC” from my Creative Commons License

2014-03-25 Thread Omega Alpha | Open Access
I dropped the “NC” rom my Creative Commons License
http://oaopenaccess.wordpress.com/2014/03/25/i-dropped-the-nc-from-my-creative-commons-license/

I’ve been meaning to do this for a while, but I was finally pushed into action
by a post I read this morning on Hugh Rundle’s blog. What did I do? I dropped
the “NC”--the non-commercial use stipulation--on the Creative Commons license
I’ve been using on my blog. Rundle writes:

Originally I chose a CC-BY-NC license because I didn’t like the idea of some
commercial publisher selling my work as part of a package. Partially this was
me thinking “If they’re going to charge, I should get a cut and partially
They shouldn’t be allowed to charge people for my work that I give away for
free. I am sure you have discerned that these two thoughts are contradictory.

Actually, I’ve never cared about getting a cut. But as an open access
advocate I was definitely concerned that a commercial interest not be able to
profit from work that I was giving away for free. I reasoned the added friction
of the “NC would serve as a deterrent. …

2014-03-25 Thread Bosman, J.M.
Hi Denny,

To me nationality of a journal is unimportant, not to say a useless concept (at
least in assessing or using an online journal) . Ivyspring is a company
registered in Australia and apparently has some sort of office in 1 market
Street Sydney. Some of its OA journals are included in JCR and Scopus, as well
as PMC. The editorial boards of its journals are predominantly occupied by US
affiliated researchers.
