COAR publishes recommendations for next generation repositories

Browse Technologies

In November 2017, the COAR Next Generation Repositories Working Group published
a report outlining new behaviours and technologies for repositories.
The aim is to position repositories as the foundation for a distributed,
globally networked infrastructure for scholarly communication, on top of which
layers of value added services will be deployed, thereby transforming the
system, making it more research-centric, open to and supportive of innovation,
while also collectively managed by the scholarly community.
The behaviours and technologies are now available on a dedicated website
 and through GitHub
. We welcome community feedback
about existing recommendations and suggestions for other technologies not yet
identified.

Re: [GOAL] MDPI annual report 2017 has been released

2018-02-15 Thread Dr. Franck Vazquez | CEO | MDPI
Thanks Richard,

You are right that there is no financial information in this report. We
want this report to focus on the progress relevant to scholarly
communities. The financial information is a different aspect that I
prefer to address separately.

We are preparing a simple finance oriented report (but not as detailed
as PLoS has been doing) for the 2015-2017 period where we will highlight
the evolution of our APC range and distribution, of number of fully
waived journals and articles, of the discounts and waivers, of the
subsidized not-for profit projects, and of the sponsoring of academic
events and awards.
This will take a few more weeks to finalize.

Best wishes,
Franck

2018-02-15 Thread Richard Poynder
Dear Franck,

Thank you for posting this. Am I right in thinking that the report does not
include any financial information about MDPI?

If that is right, do you not think it should, or that MDPI ought to publish
a financial overview in the way that PLOS does?

Best wishes,

[GOAL] Interview with Ashley Farley of the Gates foundation

2018-02-15 Thread Richard Poynder
The Bill & Melinda Gates foundation is a private foundation launched in 2000 by
Bill and Melinda Gates. According to Wikipedia, it is the largest private
foundation in the US, and currently holds $40.3 billion in assets.

In 2014, the foundation announced the most radical OA policy to date. The
policy is striking both in its requirement that all research funded by the
Gates foundation must be made freely available immediately on publication, and
in its insistence that all funded papers must be published with a CC BY licence
attached.

In February 2017, the Gates foundation signed a year-long deal with the
American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world's largest
general scientific society, to allow Gates-funded researchers to publish their
papers open access in the highly-prestigious journal Science (along with four
sister AAAS journals) without having to pay an article-processing charge.

A month later, the Gates foundation announced that it was partnering with
F1000Research to allow funded researchers to publish their papers on its own
online publication platform Gates Open Research.

An interview with Ashley Farley, Gates foundation Associate Officer of
Knowledge & Research Services, can be read here:
