the ongoing impact of the pandemic and our endeavours to ensure scholarship
is open and accessible to all to address all current and future challenges. The
event will include keynotes, an extended opening discussion, panels,
discussions and feedback sessions as well as the lightning poster talks.

[GOAL] Announcing OA Switchboard webinar: Matching Publication Costs with Publication Funds (September 8)

2021-08-11 Thread Bernie Folan
We are pleased to announce the next OA Switchboard webinar which will focus
on the shared use case *Matching Publication Costs with Publication Funds *that
launch customers and founding partners are currently working on
collaboratively. The webinar will take place on September 8, 2021.

Open Access output is growing year-on-year and the need to collaboratively
develop open infrastructure to streamline communication between
stakeholders has become a priority.

As a research institution or funder, it is complex to assess if and how a
certain OA publication meets requirements and to track publications, spend
and sponsorship. As a publisher, it is hard to find out if an article
publication satisfies an author’s OA requirements and to secure publication
funds.

Join live for this highly practical evidence-based look at how the OA
Switchboard is helping to match publication costs with publication funds
for all these use cases via a series of short five-minute talks and use
case presentations. There will be time for questions and discussions
following the talks.

Full information including the list of speakers and registration link can
be found here

[GOAL] OASPA guest post published - Growth of OASPA members book output

2021-07-21 Thread Bernie Folan
CAUTION: This e-mail originated outside the University of Southampton.

Each year, OASPA surveys its members about their publication output - both
books and journals. We are delighted to once again have worked with Delta Think
who have helped us by taking on the analysis, structuring and presentation of
the data we collected. The post is by Dan Pollock, Chief Digital Officer, Delta
Think who also took in data from OAPEN and the Directory of Open Access Books

[GOAL] Call for volunteers for new Toolkit for Disability Equity on behalf of C4DISC

2021-05-25 Thread Bernie Folan
CAUTION: This e-mail originated outside the University of Southampton.
OASPA is one of the founding members of C4DISC (The Coalition for Diversity and
Inclusion in Scholarly Communications.) We are excited to see the development
of this new Toolkit and encourage potential volunteers to sign up.

Please distribute the call widely.
___

Toolkit for Disability Equity

Lead(s): Katy Alexander, Digital Science; Simon Holt, Elsevier; Sylvia Izzo
Hunter, Inera; Erin Osborne Martin, Wiley

Closing Date: June 30, 2021

To volunteer, please complete the Working Group Application at C4DISC
(https://c4disc.org/working-group-application/) and indicate you are interested
in C4DISC Toolkit for Disability Equity in the “Working Group(s) Requested”
field. Applications are requested by June 30, 2021.

We are looking to create a resource centre to help people with disabilities
within scholarly communications thrive at work. This will help to harness the
talents of people with disabilities so they (we) can fulfil our potential at
work.

To do this, we need the help of the whole community – both those with a
disability and those without. The toolkit will aim to engage, enable and
empower both people with disabilities and allies to advocate for themselves and
each other at work, so that we can create more disability-confident working
environments throughout the scholarly communications industry.

[GOAL] Guest post: The Fully OA agreement - an essential component of a diverse open access world

*** With apologies for cross-posting ***

You may be interested in a new guest
post<https://oaspa.org/guest-post-the-fully-oa-agreement-an-essential-component-of-a-diverse-open-access-world/>
on the OASPA blog by the OASPA Fully OA Journal Publishers Interest Group.

The post calls for a greater focus on “Fully OA” publishing agreements and
argues that while much time and energy is devoted to Transformative Agreements
and transforming subscription models, a balanced approach whereby institutions
also partner with fully OA publishers to fulfill their open research strategies
and serve the needs of their research and teaching communities is optimal. It
contains a list of the benefits of fully OA agreements and a Call to Action.

It is important to note that the views of this group do not represent the views
of the OASPA membership as a whole.

Please see this
post<https://oaspa.org/the-oaspa-blog-a-platform-for-open-access-discussions/>
outlining our wish for the OASPA Blog to be a platform for open access
discussions fostering a transparent exchange of views, experiences and ideas
between all those working in the open access ecosystem to ultimately further
our mission to advance open access and ensure a diverse, vibrant, and healthy

[GOAL] New OA Switchboard blog post - Reporting Made Easy

2021-05-04 Thread Bernie Folan
CAUTION: This e-mail originated outside the University of Southampton.
*** with apologies for cross-posting ***

OASPA is pleased to continue our involvement with the OA Switchboard which we
successfully launched as a separate organisation last year. We have established
an ongoing strategic partnership agreement and are enormously proud of the
great strides already made in the OA Switchboard's development in 2021.

In this most recent blog post - Reporting Made
Easy<https://www.oaswitchboard.org/blog4may2021> - the OA Switchboard's
Executive Director, Yvonne Campfens discusses how the OA Switchboard (which
supports many use cases) is currently working with launch customers and
founding partners on the first one "Reporting Made Easy". This use case is all
about reporting from publishers to institutions/consortia and funders.

Yvonne explains "We took a step back to speak with some of our partners about
the rationale behind the need for a standardised, structured and validated data
format. We’re grateful they agreed to share their views and experiences."

These partners helpfully answered five key questions covering the underlying
need for reporting, the metadata required, sources to capture and manage these
(meta)data, and the benefits of standards. Their answers provide great insights
and we are grateful to Stacey Burke (American Physiological Society), Colleen
Campbell (Max Planck Digital Library, ESAC, OA2020), Todd Carpenter (NISO),
Helen Dobson (Jisc), Matthew Goddard (Iowa State University), Marten Stavenga
(John Benjamins Publishing Company) and Ivo Verbeek (Elitex) for taking the
time to answer these key questions.

Please send any questions or related insights of your own to Yvonne
Campfens<mailto:yvonne.campf...@oaswitchboard.org>.

We hope you enjoy the post!

Best wishes,
Bernie

[GOAL] New OASPA guest post by Jean-Claude Guédon: Scholarly Communication and Scholarly Publishing

2021-04-21 Thread Bernie Folan
CAUTION: This e-mail originated outside the University of Southampton.
*** with apologies for cross-posting ***

We have today published a new guest blog post by Jean-Claude
Guédon<https://oaspa.org/guest-post-by-jean-claude-guedon-scholarly-communication-and-scholarly-publishing/>
 on the OASPA blog.

In this thoughtful and insightful post, Guédon explores how scholarly
publishing should relate to scholarly communication. He posits that though
aligned, publishing and communication have diverged and argues that journals
and the concept of “version of record” are a legacy from print with some
processes getting in the way of optimal scholarly communication and says that
"now is the time to make some fundamental choices."

OASPA and Guédon welcome your comments on the blog and wide sharing of this
piece.

The OASPA blog is a space for community engagement on issues related to open
access and open research. We welcome thoughtful engagement and public debate in
order to foster a transparent exchange of views, experiences and ideas between
all those working in the open access ecosystem, with the overall aim of
contributing to the global advancement of open access in a way that supports
scholars and their institutions, and that gives voice to the whole spectrum of
models and approaches within our membership and ultimately furthers our mission
to advance open access and ensure a diverse, vibrant, and healthy open access
community.

Please get in touch if you are interested in publishing a guest post - please
note, authors of guest blog posts must be willing to allow moderated comments
on their post.

Best wishes,
Bernie

[GOAL] Reminder - OA Switchboard webinar: Reporting Made Easy

2021-03-24 Thread Bernie Folan
CAUTION: This e-mail originated outside the University of Southampton.

A reminder about the next OA Switchboard webinar Reporting Made Easy which will
take place next week on Wednesday March 31.

Date: Wednesday, March 31 2021

Time Zone

Time: 5:00 - 6:15 pm CEST (Other time zones: 3:00 pm UTC, 8.00 am Pacific Time,

British Summer Time, West Africa Time, 5.00 pm South Africa Standard Time, 8.30
pm India Standard Time, 2:00 am Thu Australian Eastern Daylight Time)

The webinar will focus on the "Reporting Made Easy" shared use case our launch
customers and founding partners are currently working on collaboratively.

Funders and institutions/consortia would much prefer publishers to report their
publication-level OA information in a structured format. This enables data to
be fed directly into their own (or their solution provider’s) system for
further processing and analysis.

Join us live for this practical evidence-based look at how the OA Switchboard
is making reporting easier via a series of short five-minute talks and use case
presentations - there will be time for questions and discussions following.

[GOAL] Invitation - Workshop: Innovative business models for open access book publishing in Europe

CAUTION: This e-mail originated outside the University of Southampton.
***with apologies for cross-posting***

OASPA is supporting the work of the
OPERAS-P<https://operas.hypotheses.org/operas-p> project which is looking into
innovative,
non-bpc<https://oabooks-toolkit.org/glossary/article/2798581-book-processing-charge-bpc>
business models to create a sustainable infrastructure for open access book
publishing in Europe. Following the publication of a library landscape
study<https://zenodo.org/record/4483773#.YFIZU51Kg2w>, investigating the
opportunities for developing collaborative library funding models, and a series
of publisher-specific case study interviews, we would now like to invite
publishers to participate in a series of workshops highlighting the diversity
of different business models being adopted within Europe.

Together with OPERAS<https://operas.hypotheses.org/>, we will be hosting three
European-focussed* workshops on business models for open access books targeted
specifically at small and medium-sized academic book publishers. These
workshops will be free and open to publishers that already publish open access
books as well as those considering starting open access book publishing – from
within and outside of Europe. While the first workshop will be informative in
nature, the following two will be organized as interactive in-depth workshops
focused on challenging areas in the OA books publishing process.

It is our pleasure to invite you to the first workshop to be held on April 7th
at 14:00-16:00 CEST. Please find a brief description and registration link in
this newly published blog
post<https://oaspa.org/workshop-invitation-innovative-business-models-for-open-access-book-publishing-in-europe/>.

[GOAL] OASPA webinar reminder: What is scholarly communication and publishing in the 21st Century?

2020-03-26 Thread Bernie Folan

on Thursday, April 2 at 3.00 pm. *Register now
<https://copyright.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_rXCGGBD5S8aXeMNPJ89m-A>. *

What is scholarly communication and publishing in the 21st Century and what
should our priorities for, and values of, scholarship be now? The extent to
which researchers and publishers are now making data and articles about
COVID-19 openly available, for example, is testament to the impact of the
change and the widespread understanding of the benefits of openness and
collaboration to accelerate research. This is beginning to reap real
benefits for science and society.

Governments around the world are taking an increasing interest in open
access and open science because they see direct benefits for society. In
the US, open access is now actively under consideration by the White House.
We are delighted, therefore, to have secured three US-based experts to
explore publishing’s role in service to 21st-century scholarship.

*Heather Joseph *(Executive Director of SPARC), *Kathleen Fitzpatrick
*(Director
of Digital Humanities and Professor of English at Michigan State
University) and *John Wilbanks *(Chief Commons Officer at Sage Bionetworks)

webinar to questions from the audience.

*About the Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly
Publishing*

The Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Directory of Open Access
Journals (DOAJ), the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA),
and the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME) are scholarly
organisations that have seen an increase in the number, and broad range in
the quality, of membership applications. Our organisations have
collaborated to identify principles of transparency and best practice for
scholarly publications and to clarify that these principles form the basis
of the criteria by which suitability for membership is assessed by COPE,
DOAJ and OASPA, and part of the criteria on which membership applications
are evaluated by WAME. Each organisation also has its own, additional
criteria which are used when evaluating applications.

The current version is the third (published January 2018); the first version
<https://oaspa.org/principles-of-transparency-and-best-practice-in-scholarly-publishing/>
was made available by OASPA in December 2013 and a second version
<https://oaspa.org/principles-of-transparency-and-best-practice-in-scholarly-publishing-2/>
in June 2015. We encourage its wide dissemination and continue to welcome
feedback on the general principles and the specific criteria. The
Principles and background on the organisations is at the end of this post

[GOAL] New OASPA Membership Requirement from January 2020

2019-09-03 Thread Bernie Folan
OASPA has today announced a new requirement that we will be introducing to
OASPA's membership criteria at the beginning of next year:
https://oaspa.org/oaspa-and-the-initiative-for-open-citations/

OASPA encourages all of our publisher members to submit as much metadata as
possible to Crossref and in particular to deposit references. We are aware
that for some members there are reasons why references can’t be deposited
right now, but for those who are able to do so then from 1st January 2020
we will require those references to be made openly available, in line with
the Initiative for Open Citations (https://i4oc.org).

If you are a publisher and you already deposit reference data with
Crossref, all you need to do is to send an email to supp...@crossref.org to
make that data publicly available.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

Best regards,

Bernie

[GOAL] OASPA webinar on Societies transitioning to OA - brief speaker summaries and attendee questions answered

2019-08-02 Thread Bernie Folan
** with apologies for cross-posting**

Following on from last week’s popular webinar entitled "How should
scholarly societies transition to open access?", we asked our speakers to
summarise their talks by offering a few key takeaways. This may be useful
for those who missed it or wish to share with colleagues.

We received a large number of questions during the webinar, and have also
asked speakers to respond to these. You can find those questions and
answers directly under the takeaways on this post

 (

OASPA is very grateful to the speakers - Aileen Fyfe, Stuart Taylor, Alicia
Wise and Rachael Samberg - for all of the work and time they have given to
this webinar – in preparation, on the day, and after.

We hope you find it useful.

Best wishes,

[GOAL] Results of OA article data collection from OASPA members

2019-07-08 Thread Bernie Folan
***With apologies for cross posting ***

OASPA has published a new blog post summarising the results of a recent OA
article data collection exercise carried out with input from OASPA members.

You can find the post at
https://oaspa.org/growth-continues-for-oaspa-member-oa-content/

Some highlights:

   - Total growth in output by OASPA members is 23%. This does include some
new contributors but on the whole, they were small numbers so don't count
   much towards the total.
   - Growth in CC BY articles published in fully OA journals is 18% so this
is slightly higher than it has done for the past 5 years.
   - Over a quarter of a million CC BY articles were published by OASPA
members in fully OA journals last year.

Do feel free to share within your networks.

Best wishes,
Bernie

[GOAL] Call for contributions and registration open for OASPA 2019 Conference on Open Access Scholarly Publishing

2019-05-23 Thread Bernie Folan
*** with apologies for cross-posting***

Now in its 11th year, the OASPA annual conference is a major scholarly
publishing conference that brings the open access community together to
discuss new developments and innovations in scholarly publishing, and unite
in our shared goal to enable research around the world to be openly
accessible.

As in previous years, the Program Committee has set aside sessions within
the conference program to provide opportunities for presenting projects,
ideas or initiatives relating to open access publishing. This year,
organisations and individuals are invited to submit a proposal to us for
‘Show & Tell’ presentations. These are 10-minute talks showcasing new
projects, ideas or initiatives.

All proposals should be* submitted by June 12th 2019 *at the latest
to* i...@oaspa.org
*. Please note that while we will be able to cover the
registration costs for the authors of successful proposals, we are not able
to cover any of the travel expenses that may be incurred in attending the
conference.

If you aren’t selected for a Show and Tell then there may be an opportunity
for you to present a brief Lightning Talk and poster on your topic at the
conference.

Recordings, slides and posters from previous conferences, as well as
information on how to register, can be found on our website here
<https://oaspa.org/conference/>.

We look forward to receiving your suggestions!
