Daaiz to celebrate Daaiz Day on 11th Nov

Kuwait, 24 October 2005: Daaiz will celebrate Daaiz
Day on the 11th of November 2005 at Carmel School
Auditorium in Kuwait at 6:00pm, on which the releasing
of the first Divo Daaiz Special Issue 2005 and the
first konkani book on poetry articles - Kavithapaatt
Vol-1 will take place. A Konkani play 'Goonda' written
and directed by Melwin J vas, Kelarai will be played
by Daaiz members.

Daaiz is a group of Konkani's progressive writers,
poets and critiques working voluntarily for the
betterment of Konkani literature in particular.
Literature has no boundary, limits, and languages when
it comes to reaching the reader. Language is just a
media of communicating it to the readers. Daaiz has
been conducting various activities in Kuwait that
supports Konkani language, literature and journalism.

Kavithapaatt is one of the concepts in which various
Konkani poems are being studied and articles by
various poets are being presented. If we really care
for good literature, then we have to be ready for any
criticism. Learning should be the must for every
writer/poet. Only a review on the writing of every
poet/writer will make him a matured poet/writer. The
first monthly literary workshop in the Gulf was
conducted on the 15th November 2002 by Valley Quadras
at his residence, Late Cha.Fra.D'Costa's poetry was
chosen for the debate. After this session the
literature of various other writers/poets such as Late
Luis Mascarenhas, Sijyes Taccode, Melvyn Rodrigues,
Late. George Pinto, J.B.Moraes and others have been
conducted.

Kavithapaatt is mainly focusing on Konkani poetry of
various poets, and various forms of poetry. For every
month, poetry will be chosen for the study and a
complete study will be done on the chosen poem and
will be presented during the Kavithapaatt. Daaiz.com
has published these articles in Kavithapaatt Vol-1
edited by Valley Quadras and published by Ashawadi
Publications. Well-known poets/writers Melvyn
Rodrigues, Henry M Pernal, Hemacharya have written the
forewords.

Daaiz Divo Special Issue 2005 is focusing on special
cause - a charity. The objective of this special issue
is to support a human cause through literature. For
the first time in the history that a special issue is
getting published in which all the Konkani people have
worked together for a cause. Well-known poets/writers
Hemacharya, Melvyn Rodrigues, Andrew L. D'Cunha from
UAE, Clarence Pinto from Muscat, Cyril Sequeira from
Qatar, and Austine Prabhu from America, Gilbert
Sequeira, Valley Quadras and Daaiz writers from Kuwait
have worked for this special issue in the editorial
board. Well known social workers and Konkani
supporters of various associations such as Ida D'Silva
Paladka (Vice-President of KCWA), Nitin Castelino
(Former President of SWAK), Anil Menezes (President of
SWAK), Jossy Pinto, Pascal Pinto (Former President of
KCWA), Vincent Noronha (Social Worker), Clara
Fernandes, Jane Ida Pinto, Sigfred D'Souza, Joel D'Sa
Bahrain and others have worked in the advertisement
committee. This special issue has been intended to
support for Seon Ashram at Belthangady.

As part of this event, 'Goonda' a play written by
Melwin J Vas Kelarai (based on 'Goonda' - the short
story of Valley Quadras) at Carmel School Auditorium
will be played by Melwin J Vas, Antony Menezes, Veena
Menezes, Reena Quadras, Cyril Peris, Nitin Lobo,
Valerian D'Souza, Alexander Fernandes and Pascal
Pinto.

All konkani supporters and well-wishers are welcome to
this special event.

gender, happiness, wealth and group affiliation.
Fashion is a form of “Free Speech” Emotion”.

It not only embraces clothing, but also accessories,

Dear Gurudatta,

CONGRATULATIONS TO RUPA and the man who stands solidly behind her in this
foray into politics, Gurudatta!.

When I posted the email below on the various Net groups, some people thought
I was mad. BINGO. It was rather accurate. Both the ladies whom I expected to
lose, did lose. I expected Rupa and Ryan to win. They did. I am not into
politics...but I like good people to win. It is upto them to remain
good...or turn bad and face defeat the next time round as their predessors
did. We have a majority of new faces in MMC. It is always nice that way. New
brooms sweep the cleanest.

Subject: MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS: Jo jeeta woh Sikander!

The good councillors , who have the good of their ward residents and their
town are few and far between. They may not be modern day Raja
Harishchandra
types, but they served the local interest most times.
The non-performers are ,obviously, one-time councillors. No one will vote
 for them.

It is in the new faces that one has hopes where a good councillor does not
exist. At the very least, they will take time to become corrupt as
compared
 to the 'experienced hands.'
In the toss between a proven turncoat who has served one or more terms
[and
shifted sides more than once to be on the ruling side] and a new face with
proven management capacity, whether affiliated to a political party or
not,
the logical choice of the voter should be the new face. Party affiliation
is
no big shake in a municipality . One of these two young ladies is
facing stiff opposition from a dynamic
office bearer of the GPCCI, who has set up her election office in the same
building as the senior hand in the MMC. The other has the son of the
former
Chairperson and Congress man to fend against. It may well be a 'Oktober
Fest' at Mandarin on 25 October!
..
I wish Rupa all the best. May she become the Chairperson of MMC. My mother
was offered that post in the 1970s. She declined because she had seven of us
children to look after and two of us were still in school. She made the
sacrifice and only accepted the Vice-chairmanship. No regrets in any of us.
Rupa has no such responsibilities. She can go the whole hog as Ms Phyllis
Faria did before her. Mrs. Faria was also nominated as an MLA while Goa was
part of an Union Territory. That is no longer possible in Goa State. May
Rupa win and become an MLA, sooner rather than later. The electorate is sure
looking for a new face in Mhapsaa person who remains in one party, even
if it is in the opposition for the full five years. The Assembly elections
are not too far away.

 Viva Goa.

Our Reference No: GSRP/APJ-Kalam/POI/10/05

October 20, 2005

To,
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam,
President of India,
Rashtrapati Bhavan,
New Delhi.

Your Excellency,

Subject: Your visit to Goa on October 18, 2005

We are heartened by your short visit to our state, even more so, because you
saw it fit to address Goa's elected representatives and give them the
insight to your vision for Goa, to transform it into a modern state,
offering high standards of living and quality of life for its citizens
through your unique nine point 'Road Map for Goa'.
The reason we have decided to write to you is to draw your kind attention to
a similar Road Map for Goa, which this small, newly formed Party has offered
to the people of Goa, to attain the same objectives that you have underlined
in your 'Road Map'. We have taken the liberty to highlight portions of our
'Road Map' where these two road maps find common grounds, for, both
converge on two very important aspects, one being that of 'jatropha' based
bio-diesel, and, two, the necessity to have trained 'paramedics'.

However, with a heavy heart, we would like to inform Your Excellency that no
sooner than you left our august Legislative Assembly Complex at Porvorim,
our esteemed MLAs and their party workers found it fit to get at each other'
s throats and come to blows, erasing some of the goodness and the
enlightenment that your visit has brought on our state and in our minds. We
take the liberty of enclosing the newspaper clippings covering your visit to
Goa, as well as of the unbecoming behaviour of our MLAs, immediately
following your address to the Goa Legislative Assembly.

Your Excellency, today, this once beautiful and clean state has been
reduced to a state of a slum, where, due to lack of commitment and foresight
on the part of our governments, Goa has become a big garbage bin.
Authorities have been passing the buck for far too long with garbage
remaining un-cleared for days on end, and, what is worst, it is being
clandestinely dumped into our rivers and onto our highways and open spaces,
so much so, that citizens have to keep eternal vigils and/or fight court
battles to save themselves from the invasion of garbage. If Your Excellency
's itinerary did include a visit to our inner cities and public places such
as our markets and bus terminuses, you would wonder if you really were in
Goa or in Mumbai's Dharavi area.

No doubt, we, in Goa, have had popular governments, with alarming frequency
of 'President's Rules'. However, we in Goa look upon those short periods of
'President's Rules' with special fondness, especially the period of the
President's rule by Lt. General (retd) J.F.R. Jacob in 1999. And we wish
that when your recent visit brought you down to Goa, you would never leave,
to make Goa your dear home rather than New Delhi. This is because we are
slowly losing our dear old Goa to arbitrary governmental decision-making,
reducing democracy to a mere mockery, where our entire city infrastructures,
our forests, our cultivable lands and our open spaces are sought to be
devoured through Government proclaimed ORDINANCES and which 'Ordinances'
are signed in your name by our esteemed Governors, without a moment of
hesitation and/or reflection. The instant cases are: (1) The 'IFFI
(International Film Festival of India) Ordinance passed by the BJP
appointed Governor, Mr. Kidarnath Sahani during the previous BJP rule in
2004, to by-pass legitimate laws, rules and regulations of the Town
Country Planning Act, to allow the government to do as it liked with our
ancient city of Panjim, not only wreaking havoc with our existing
infrastructures, but replacing age old infrastructures with temporary and
hastily built ones, which collapsed with the onset of just one monsoon,
sending crores of taxpayer's money down the drain, and, (2) The latest to be
proclaimed, immediately after the most recent Legislative Assembly Session
has been concluded, is the draconian 'Town Country Planning Ordinance'
proclaimed by the Congress appointed Governor, Mr. S.C. Jamir, through which
the Town Country Planning Minister can change the land-use, anywhere in
the state of Goa, at the stroke of a pen, destroying the years of meticulous
planning to preserve our cultivable lands, our hills and our open spaces,
and which Ordinance has put the entire state out of gear, altogether, with
citizens trying to recover from this devastating shock and consolidating
their

Hello Lawrence...

Thank your for your email...

There are different types of plastics - some suitable to store food grade
items, some suitable to microwave, and others seriously meant for a one time
use!

What i was stressing on is the reuse of one time use PET bottles (the empty
bottles after consuming soft drinks, mineral water, etc in GOA, INDIA), for
storing vinegar, milk and even feni in goa! i personally know of a superstore
(in a quaint village) storing milk (unpasturised) for sale! the consumer -
mostly being children! The most educated in goa pay no heed to looming health
hazards like this..even when i explained the ill-effects of this practice,
to the very educated couple who run this superstore, their response was very
casual! bottom line - NO ONE REALLY CARES.

You stressed on PET storage of Water not being harmful for drinking purposes -
well, long use of the PET used to store water will definitely not be healthy
for you. Please date the bottle that ur re-using, and discard the PET for
recycling purpose after 6-12 months!

I work in an environment where i know of certain facts, so may i stress on the
fact that migration does take place from the PET bottles which are reused for
storing perishable products...! Also, I am from the category of people who
do not ursup *urban legends*!

I would personally request all reading this post to re-think storing food
items in Polybags / PET / other plastics ..the less we depend on them
the better it is the choice is really YOURS!

god bless,
savika

From: Lawrence Rodrigues [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Savika, Floriano,

While the *backyard* burning of *plastics* has been confirmed to be
dangerous, the *danger* of using/reusing plastics/PET for storing food
and water seems to be an *urban legend*

Yes, I will always remain grateful to my Lord for..

-I never had a problem with money ever since I was a kid.
-My father was a seaman 'Tarvotti' so we were rich from the the begining.
-Infact, we were the richest in our locality compare to other boys and girls
from my
village.
-Never had a need to borrow money from any one.

However, when I arrive in UK in early 1993 I had some problems.
I was on my own, no job for six months what ever I had I spent on my rent (a
shared
room), spent on local transport and expensive telephone calls to (India) my Mom
£1.80p
per minute call from BT (Now just 25p a minute others just 6p a minute).

Close friends who stayed with me in Goa at my/our expense for several days a
month did
not want to know me or recognise me when I was in London (they were 5 years
before me in
Uk).
An elder friend whom I always tried to phone, his wife always said 'he is in
the shower'
When in GOA we all were friends and we being the richest they always come and
stayed with
us and my Mom never had any problems with my friends living with me.

In the name of Lord, I made few sacrifices, I ate just once a day (evening meal
only) and
no breakfast no Lunch. I spent lot of time not in churches or gardens but in
cementaries
where I felt relaxed. I guess my prayers were heared by the deads and God.

I am now happy go lucky man with a good job/company for which i am working now
for the
last 12 years.

Lord, I am really grateful to you for keeping me happy all the times.

BHOGOS MAKA SAIBA HANVEN TUKA OU TUJE PORJEK OKMAN KELA ZALEAR.

Welcome to the FRIDAY BALCAO
Read the Balcao Synopsis on the website

--

Dear Cybergaokars on GoaNet,

Friday Balcao the fortnightly discussion event
to be held on 28th October will focus on the
National AIDS Control Program in the context of Goa.

Dr. J. J. Dias Project Director and Dr. Jose D'Sa
Dy. Director Blood Safety of the Goa State AIDS Control
Society (GSACS) will lead the discussion on the National
AIDS Control Program.

The HIV/AIDS scenario urgently requires a community
response so as to contain its spread. To achieve this
objective it is imperative that the AIDS Control Program
needs to be decentralised.

Will the awareness programs be limited to the so called
High Risk Groups ? Will sex education in schools and
colleges be an effective tool to control HIV/AIDS ?
Do religious leaders have a specific task in such a
program ?

What strategies can Trade Unions, Women's groups and
Youth Organisations contribute ? What kind of a role can
the tourism trade play in view of Goa being an International
tourist destination ? What additional information must be
made available to people planning to work overseas ?

Can the Primary Health Centre be an effective nodal agency
to monitor the effectiveness of the program at the local level ?
Do Village Panchayats and Municipal Councils have their
tasks cut out for them in the program ?

The Balcao discussion will cover these questions and
also evolve an agenda for action by citizens on the issue.

Friday Balcao will be from 4pm to 6pm
at the Goa Desc Resource Centre
No.11 Liberty Apartments Feira Alta,
Mapusa and is open to members of the public.

We invite you to express your viewpoint

Dear
Are we confusing the Janvem, munz and the nadi? Munz ceremony heralds the

The Aldona Children's Park, once a vibrant community recreation centre, has
been lying neglected for many years. Each and every time elected
representatives have promised to do the park up but have failed to deliver.

In mid-September 2005 my good friend and civil contractor, Gordon Lobo,
decided to do what he could with his limited resources. He got the park
weeded and cleaned up for a start. Other locals chipped and paint was
purchased. A painting contractor from Aldona, Thomas Tavares, gave his
workers and tools free for painting the park. A Dubai based Aldonkar,
Cajetan Mendonca, gave a generous donation of Rs. 5000/- when he came to
know about this initiative. Local businessmen are contributing time, energy
and resources. My brother Conrad Pinto, a computer graphics expert, made a
design for one wall of the park and also a simulation of how it would look
in two years if it was not maintained. Mark D'Souza, the popular and
talented art teacher from the St. Thomas Boys High School has volunteered
to coordinate the painting of that wall.

On 26th October 2005 young children from Aldona will converge at the park
they will be provided with paints and brushes and will paint the wall
themselves. Volunteers most welcome.

We are sick and tired of waiting for the Government to spruce up the Aldona
Children's Park. We will do it ourselves. For our children and their children.

Cogent arguments? Hardly so, I should say. Moreover, I wonder what is the
basis of Uday and some others (and now also of Alvito) to state that
Devanagari is the natural script of our Konkani language. It has been
reported by some scholars that, in all probability, the letra da terra
referred to by Thomas Stephens and others of his time as being extremely
difficult to be adopted for printing books in the lingua da terra was in
fact Goykannaddi (a script which, as far as I know, was then used but has
been extinct now for quite a long time) and not Devanagari. So, it would
appear that what was the natural script of amchi bhas was Goykannaddi.

If the Konkanis of Karnataka can use the Kannadda script to write their
books, magazines and newspapers and (with the support of the Government of
that state) to teach their language (Konkani) to their children in schools -
without renouncing Devanagari altogether -, is it so difficult for a section
of Goans to accept that both the Roman and the Devanagari scripts are
officially adopted by Goa's Vidhan Sabha? - The argument has been set forth
(so far without contestation, as far as I can remember) that there are some
deficiencies in Devanagari to interpret correctly some Konkani sounds, and
that those deficiencies can be (and indeed are) done away with by making a
couple of modifications to the existing Roman alphabet. The resulting new
(if I may say so) Romi-Konknni orthography is open for discussion and its
authors have already made public their willingness to analyse and
accommodate suggestions. Why not, therefore, come out with the suggestions
one may wish to present, instead of condemning point blank whaterver efforts
are made on behalf of the Romi Lipi and insisting upon the Devnagri Lipi
only and upon the Antruzi Konknni dialect?

The above are my points of view, nothing else, without hard feelings towards
anybody. - Let's all work together for the betterment, development and
progress of our language and not engage in endless controversies (which
Rajan Narayan chooses to call war).

Cogent arguments in favour of Devanagri, like those from Uday-bab Bhembro,
have been long overdue. The naturalness of that script's link with Konkani
is
so much a matter of fact that I have been amazed that there should be any
movement at all towards retention of any other script for it.
Bad enough that our mother tongue faces onslaughts of various kinds - not
to
speak of the dominance of English in this day and age of IT-mania.
Any long-term adoption of a script other than Devanagri is bound to ensure
lack of standardisation, resulting in a sure atrophying of our beloved
mother
 tongue.

Maybe it will puzzle you less if you realized that the
US was the first country in history to have a written
Constitution and a written Bill of Rights, which are
features of a true democracy that protects the
interests and rights of every one of a country's
citizens.

It took the gentlemen farmers 12 years after defeating
the British to invent, develop and ratify the US
Constitution, which included several unprecendented
notions, a co-equal, three legged stool of checks and
balances between the Executive, Legislative and
Judicial branches, the local, state and Federal
hierarchy of government, the Electoral College, two
Senate seats for every state, large or small, the
latter two notions designed to provide regional
balance to prevent large or populous states from
dominating less populous or smaller states. The
concern was to avoid the potential anarchy of the
majority from trampling the interests and rights of
the smallest minority.

Even the ingenious framers of the US Constitution
didn't get it right the first time, when slavery was
legal and women dis-enfranchised, but subsequent
amendments fixed those early problems, and the US
Constitution became the model of freedom and
democracy.

We are now demanding that the Iraqis, write a

It was an election verdict with a difference. Many of
the sitting councillors were consigned into the
squalor filth and garbage that they had failed to
clear during their terms.

Others shown the door were those indulging in musical
chairs e.g Mormugao Municipality which had the dubious
record of 11 Chairpersons during its five year tenure
beginning 24th October, 2001 to 23rd October 2005.
Obviously they had other gameplans -- self
development and the voters showed them the door.

It is difficult to figure which political party will
form the ruling team, as Independents (at least as of
now) could tilt the balance in most of the 11
Municipal councils which went to the polls yesterday
registering over 77 % turnout.

The victory pattern emerging as per reports last
recieved from the various counting by this writer
indicate as under:

a)some candidates won just by one vote
b) in husband wife duo contesting the wives seemed to
win while their husbands bit the dust
c) where sitting councillors changed wards either for
fear of imminent defeat or because the rotation making
their wards reserved for women many of them lost
d) ST denied the reservation that they rightly
deserved were successful in several general wards;
showing that they are now a significant force to
reckon with
e) candidates who outstretched by six fold their
election limits beyond the official Rs 15,000 mark (
unfortunately it is a riduculous limit given the
rising costs of diesel and petrol and high tech
campaining material (Rs 300/ Rs 400/- Rs 600/- for

withdrawing candidate made a fast buck
g) there were several instances where the winning
margins were less than twenty
h) considerable infighting between the ruling Indian
National Congress party and factionalism resulted in
voters being confused on the official candidate
i) with many of the new councillors being fresh and
young faces some without even a record of having done
any social work -- their victories were because of the
infighting among the political party candidates.
j) it is clear in the INC that party above individuals
is clearly a misnomer in Goa MPs MLAs have excercised
their clout to see the victories of their own
candidates
k) just five of the 11 Municipal councils have
decisive victors who will form the ruling council in
all others -- prospects of instability looms large
l) eight councillors are non goans with less than 15
years domicile while twenty three are non goans with

Dr. R. A. MASHELKAR.

On the 22nd September/2005 The Indian Express Times published on its front
page column 1 the following “India Empowered to me is Opening avenues for
growth of IT, i.e. Indian Talent” By Dr. M. A. Mashelkar, the world knows
this person better than any of us, often we Goans fails to recognize our
kin, we often appreciate and praise others for their achievements but fail
to appreciate our own. When I first read the name “Mashelkar” there was a
itchy feeling in my mind that this man had to be a Goan, I started digging
around and almost at the end of 2 months, I finally found what I wanted.

Yes, Dr. R. A. Mashelkar “Dr. Ragunath Anand Mashelkar” now age 62 is a
native of Goa, the ancient Portuguese colony, that returned to India in
1961. He is a son of the true “Indian Knowledge Dream”. He was born in
1943, his parents came and settled in Bombay/Mumbai long before liberation.
Most probably he hails from Marseilles (a small village in Goa). In his
Sept. article he emphasized on young Indians who often stop schooling at a
early age due to unavoidable circumstances, he said I’m not an exception,
and wrote the following brief:-

I too belonged to that submerged part of the iceberg. I was born in a poor
family, my father died when I was six, my illiterate mother did menial work
to bring me up, I went barefoot till I was twelve, I studied under street
lights. Yet I was empowered again and again… he further says, I studied in a
free municipal school, access to free education through public funding was
the first empowerment in my life. On finishing primary school, I sought
admission in a secondary school. I required 21 rupees as admission fee. My
mother did not have the money. A lady, who herself was a housemaid in
Mumbai, gave her savings to us. One ‘have not’ sharing with another ‘have
not’ was a powerful lesson of empowerment early in my life.

He stood 11th amongst 1,35,000 students in the state, for the Maharashtra
State Board exams in 1960, he was about to leave school, since his mother
could not afford his college education. At this moment Sir Dorabji Tata
Trust gave him a scholarship of 60 rupees per month until his graduation,
thus his new empowerment came through the Philanthropy of an Industrial
house.

His school teachers empowered him, his physics teacher was Principal Bhave,
one day all students were taken outdoors to show them how to find the focal
length of a convex lens, when the sun rays were focused on the paper, it got
burnt. At this moment Principal Bhave turned to him and said “Mashelkar, if
you focus your energies, you can achieve anything in life.” That gave him an
inspiration to become a scientist. It gave him the philosophy of life; focus
and you can achieve anything. He completed his Chemical engineering degree
in 1966 from Bombay University. He preferred to do his Ph.D. in India and
then went for his post-doctoral research in the UK. He was professor in the
UK and in the US, but returned to India in 1976 at the age of 32 to join the
National Chemical Laboratory - Pune.

He was teaching and researching in England in the early Seventies. At that
time Indiara Gandhi was the Prime Minister, the news of Nobel Laureate
Khorana not getting a job in India had done rounds. She asked the then
Director General of CSIR Dr. Nayudamma to go abroad, pick up the brightest
and the best and offer them jobs on the spot. Naydamma went to London in
1974, he met Dr. Mashelkar among others and offered him a position at NCL in
Pune. He says there was no application, no formal interview, no bureaucratic
hurdles when he got the job, he says thanks to a science leader who was
trusted and empowered by a Prime Minister.

Dr. Mashelkar. An internationally acclaimed chemical engineer, took over as
the Director of National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) in june 1989, AT 46, he
was the youngest Director to take over the charge of this premier research
laboratory, later on while he was Director of NCL he was appointed Director
General CSIR and Secretary, Department of Scientific Industrial Research.
He took over charge of his new office on 30th June 1995. At 52, he was the
youngest DG of CSIR. Today he is also the President of Indian National
Science Academy in New Delhi.

In his write-up he also says the following “ India cannot be truly empowered
until the best of its talent stays in India and contributes. He further

I append a message from Constantino Xavier ,
our Young Goans International _World Goa Day :
Coordinator:

000

1ST YOUNG GOANS INTERNATIONAL ESSAY CONTEST (2005)

000

Dear all,

Why this contest, many ask. Why this theme "What I can do for Goa"?

I have been the coordinator of World Goa Day in Portugal for some years now, since 2001. And what I have seen most is that the Goan youth is so many times forgotten. A community, our Goan communities abroad, can only survive if there is a bond linking all generations - old and young- to Goa itself. In the end, we call ourselves Goans (even if on a "part-time" basis) because something attracts us to that tiny piece of coastal land somewhere in Asia.

So, there arises the need for us to re-engage ourselves with Goa. We can do it by promoting our tradition, our culture, our language etc. abroad, in the countries we live in. But we can do it also - and we should do so - by keeping strong links with Goa. And it is up to the younger generations who are born abroad or have only little knowledge about Goa to find out new ways (or strengthen old ways) to build up this relationship.

Therefore, by inviting our global youth to think about how THEY can do something for Goa is the way we chose to give our contribute. With special support by the esteemed jury (Ben Antao, Ethel da Costa, Lino Leitao, Victor Rangel-Ribeiro and Wendell Rodricks, all donating great prizes) and the weekly Goan Observer who is going to publish the best four essays.

The contest was launched on World Goa Day 2005, not by coincidence: this is an important date for the Goan Diaspora worldwide, to pass the message that... we are proud to be Goans and want to be so ACTIVELY,
by giving something back to Goa.

A MESSAGE TO THE YOUTH: do not feel shy, do not think you have no idea about Goa, no sufficient knowledge or no original ideas. If you like to write and if you have some kind of interest in Goa, some idea, some thought, share it in an informal way, just let your fingers type freely what flows from your mind.

You observed the traditional Goan houses are falling apart?

You have an idea to promote Goa in your school, in your neighbourhood etc.?

You feel there should specific Goatourism programmes for young peple like you?

You feel the flora and fauna of Goais in danger?

You have ideas to organize original events in your local Goan association/club?

Something else which is related to Goa and where you would like to participate and share your views?

This is the moment to do so... Grab your creativity and start writing (see conditions below). And you could win great prizes (150 USD for the best essay) and see your text published in a Goan newspaper!

Good luck to all...

Veronica Bab, you are right about the Taichung paddy seeds...
besides expensive fertilizer and water, the rice was not suitable for our
goemcars
cause we Goemcars like to have 'pott bhor xit-koddi'..where else with the
Taichung rice..one felt hungry within a few hours...compared to our local
seed.

As for the state or govt award I am not sure, but this was told to me by our
then head master, and incharge for our annaul School tiatr (St. Bosco's
High School, Chinchinim).
I had presented this song for the audition but was rejected as it was M.
Boyers song. I still remember
some parts of that song...Besides this song was full of proverbs

Congratulations to Prince Jacob for his Film Padri which was released on
Saturday. The premiere show was watched by the capacity crowd at Ashok
Theatre in Panjim. I had an opportunity to watch this premiere show.
Comedy was good by both the brothers Jacob and Humbert and with the addition
of another excellent comedian John D'Silva, comedy turned out to be
beautiful. Annie Quadros did a wonderful job of a Uni, her role of a dead
person in the coffin in the cemetry deserve highest compliments. The role
played by Mangalorean heroine is to be appreciated. Her looks are also good
befitting her role. The role played by Newton as Priest is to be
appreciated so also by both the youngsters as his brothers. The scenes were
good depicting real Goa.

My point of writing this is to congratulate Prince Jacob for taking such a
bold step at this young age to produce a Film. I also congratulate his
colleagues in cooperating with him in this great venture. With this film
the importance of Konkani language has gone still high.

I hope Konkani lovers will support this filmso that Prince Jacob and other
Konkani artistes will also go forward in producing more and more Konkani
Films.

Now selling in Nagpur: Fuel from plastic waste

Jaideep Hardikar
Monday, October 24, 2005 01:01 IST

NAGPUR: Fuel from plastic waste is a reality — a commercial reality.
The Unique Waste Plastic Management and Research Company Pvt Ltd of Dr
Alka and Umesh Zadgaonkar, is actually producing 5,000 litres of fuel
from plastic trash and running a profitable business of selling it to
industrial units in Butibori just outside the city.

Away from the public gaze and doubting Thomases after their public
claims in 2003, the Zadgaonkars have been producing fuel from plastic
waste since March this year. If they have not made a noise about it,
it's because they are drowning in business enquiries and expansion
plans. By December, they want to expand capacity five-fold to 25 MT
of plastic waste (25,000 litres daily) — and ultimately grow it to 450
MT.

Facts

*Zadgaonkars' plant went into commercial production in March 2005

*Producing 5000 litres fuel from 5MT of waste daily

*Can also run vehicles after more refining. Has better combustibility
than petrol

*Bike did 0-60 in 18 secs on this fuel against 22 secs on petrol

A city with problems galore

Bob Hoekstra
Sunday, October 23, 2005 20:45 IST

There are seven million people in Bangalore, and the resignation of one
citizen from an important post does not spell disaster; other people will
stand up and make things happen. The lasting impact may be that the
government will now struggle to get the best people to work for it. That is
the real concern.

Chidambaram promises world-class Metro and speedy airport
Monday October 24 2005 00:00 IST
BANGALORE: Expressing concern over the recent controversy regarding
Bangalore's infrastructure, including the resignation of Infosys Chief
Mentor N R Narayana Murthy as Chairman of Bangalore International Airport
Limited, Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Sunday promised a
world-class Metro to the City and called upon Chief Minister Dharam Singh to
expedite the airport project.

Inaugurating the platinum jubilee celebrations of Vijaya Bank here,
Chidambaram felt that only the economy could make the country strong and
stressed that nothing should be said or done to disturb the persons
involved in economic activities.'' Stating that only the economy could make
India strong, he regretted that though the world has recognised India's
potential, Indians are yet to recognise it.

Chidambaram's statement highlights the importance of seeing national
strength in the proper perspective.

President APJ Kalam has drawn the road map for Goa and
Sonia Gandhi has brought out an 18 point ETHICS CODE
for Congress leaders with austerity as the new mantra.
All this may not have any bearing on Goa politicians
who have their own agenda and have over the years
matured in the art of clinging to office to serve
their selfish ends.

The Goa Congress Party has missed a golden opportunity
of capturing the public's imagination. They could have
shown that they really meant business by scrapping the
Planning and Development Authorities (PDAs) and
banishing the Zilla Parishads by empowering the
Village Panchayats.

The current agitation by the Santa Cruz Citizen's
Committee to demand exclusion of Santa Cruz, Merces
and Chimbel from the North Goa PDA is commendable but
one can see the political overtones in it with
Victoria Fernandes trying to settle political scores
and the BJP trying to use the issue to fish in Goa's
murky political waters.

The rivalry and feud between Mrs. Victoria Fernandes
and Babush Monserrate is nothing new. It was only
further charged during the last Taleigao Panchayat
elections when Victoria's kin had to bite the dust at
the hands of the panel set up by the Taleigao MLA who
made a clean sweep.

Mrs. Victoria Fernandes is asking the people to
protest against the government's decision. Why does
she not set an example and as a protest first herself
resign from all government posts doled out to her?
The crumbs of Deputy Speaker and Chairmanship of Goa
Handicrafts Corporation that were craftily handed over
to her and she willingly fell for it.

Victoria's unwarranted outbursts against Santa Cruz's
long-serving Sarpanch William Gonsalves and Merces ZP
Member Kishore Narvekar are in bad taste. They have
supported her in the past and Victoria should not
expect everyone to always dance to her political
tunes.

Victoria Fernandes has also been the Chairman of the
North Goa PDA in the past. What steps did she take to
exclude rural areas including Ribandar which though
then part of Panjim Municipality had all the looks of
a rural area?

I have known and worked with Victoria Fernandes on
various issues over the last three decades.
Understandably over the last few years she has not
been
keeping good health which in a way may be the cause
for the neglect in the overall development of Santa
Cruz Constituency of which Ribandar is currently a
part.

With her term as MLA soon coming to an end and she
having made it public at the last election that it
would be her last, she should now focus on trying to
find a young and dynamic successor to carry the Santa
Cruz constituency forward. William Gonsalves, Kishore
Narvekar, Adv Atanasio Monteiro amongst others may be
able to do justice to the job. As far as Ribandar is
concerned at the next assembly elections we will be
part of Panjim Constituency. Whether it is for better
or worse, only time will tell!

Dear Fred:

I am in overall agreement with your views. Although I do not want to respond
in a lengthy manner,
here are my observations:
1. The caste element is hiding behind the so-called debate and proponents of
Devnagiri script
only. We need to continuously call their bluff. It cannot be quietly ignored.
2. There is a religious component no doubt, but it should be uncontroversial
that Romi script
should have as prominent a status as any other script. In a state rich in
diversity, the goal
ought to be unity in diversity.
3. The idea of one script, one language is made on tenuous ground. India and
Europe thrive on many
languages, dialects. Encouraging diversity and Romi script will keep the
language alive. The 1987
error of in Devnagiri script needs to be reversed. For the survival of the
language alone, never
mind the underlying caste, religious, and geographical issues.

Regards,
George

Incidently I attended 'LORNA'S ' show at Mangalore on 09/Oct (at Milagres
Church
Hall) which was a sell-out. People had to return home disappointed as
tickets were sold
out. Though there were many other Goan Singers also participating - Lorna
stole the show
as usual with her numerous Old Hits and the crowd went home thrilled.
Several times she was
given a standing ovation especially for Yo Baile Yo - Soro maka di poilo.
Must say
that she sings and moves like a 20 year old.

Cheers !

dear friends,

I feel appalled the way our mother tongue is being treated. My fellow goan
brothers and sisters fought to make it our mother tongue. I find myself
saying, why should my mother tongue be written in Devanagari, when for the
last 450years it has been written in Romani, all the documents are written in
Romani. Each and every Goan abroad can read the Konkani language in Romani. I
am sure every Goan in Goa and abroad will agree with me. I feel the Government
of Goa has not done enough for us Goans. I do hope this will change. I feel
somtimes we Goans do not have a say, in our own affairs, of how our state is
run. People who were not born of Goan parents have a better say in our
affairs. I do hope this problem in Goa can be rectified. We have more people
from outside Goa employed in Goa, and Goan brothers and sisters are made to
look like second class citizens.

Regards
T. mello

DNA [Daily News Analysis]

With the holiday season round the corner, tour operators have started enticing
customers with tempting offers, like ‘Tour of 17 European cities in 15 days’.
Many such offers come with catch phrases like ‘Stay at Hotel Splendour or
equivalent’ and ‘subject to local conditions’.

But how many of the promises made in the tour brochure can the tour operator
bend?

This was decided in an interesting case between Cox Kings India Ltd and
Sheila P B. D’souza by the Maharashtra State Consumer Dispute Redressal
Commission.

The points of dispute were the following:

*The tour skipped Brussels ‘as there was heavy traffic jam in the direction of
that city’

*Food was often served at gas stations and not at restaurants

*Hotels were changed at nine centres and were not as mentioned in the brochure

The consumer was awarded damages of Rs 10,000 and Rs 1,850 as costs.
