Who is benefitting from this story? What are the valid
contributions of these people coming to stay in Goa?
They are there for 6 months lounging away from their
cold winters. In places like Tenerife these people
have been asked to get out of the land.

B. Colaço

Look at some facts. There are at least 10,000
 semi-permanent British
expatriates in Goa, spread out thickly on the
 tourism belts. There's a
successful British butcher selling pork pies and
 smoked bacon from his
house in Arpora, a proper English pub complete with
 bangers and mash
in distant Palolem. The UK media covers aspects of
 Goa as though it
was Benidorm, and in some ways it really is.

The Israelis are also here in force, with a
 long-term community in
Anjuna that swells to several thousand at year's
 end. There are many
places, right here in Goa, where you can be in an
 all-Sabra,
 all-Hebrew-speaking, environment. The Israeli
 trance-music-oriented
tribe is so attached to Goa that they hold giant
 recreations of their
nights in Anjuna back in the steamy Middle East,
 where thousands of
youth who call themselves Goans replay the music
 that originated at
early rave parties on our coastline.

The Russians are coming, in considerable force. Each
 year, over the
past five years, we've seen something like a
 doubling in number of
visitors from that country, and now something
 similar to what happened
in Anjuna may be under way in Morjim. All the signs
 are there steady
real estate purchases, the emergence of a
 long-staying expatriate
population, growth in charter numbers, attention to
 Goan land prices
 from the Russian media.

And then you have the Germans, the Italians, the
 Scandinavians, the
curious semi-cult of Taiwanese who live in Calangute
 and sell tofu and
cheap chappals, and the nostalgic Portuguese, and
 the lanky Croatians.
And India's Page 3 people, who have become
 accustomed to treating Goa
 as a private playground,

[Goanet] The Indian Catholic... and instant ordination

An email asked me to browse this site, so I checked up
http://www.theindiancatholic.com/news_read.asp?nid=898

The Indian Catholic is apparently the news-site of the Catholic Bishops
Conference of India. Reading it, I was a bit surprised to see a
Google-adsense advert on the page, which refers visitors to a site
offering:

Free Instant Ordination
www.SpiritualHumanism.org
Be a legally ordained clergy person Perform weddings, baptisms, etc.Free
Instant Ordination

It talks of spiritual humanism and says: If you agree that Religion
must be based on Reason, you can be ordained right now for free, and be
still able to practice your own religious traditions by simply clicking
the button below...

It says, observing holidays is a tradition intertwined with
spirituality and talks about paganism and the like.

Which made me wonder: was the CBCI aware, or does it have any control,
about the ads being put on its page by Google adsense? If so, does it
necessarily approve of them? Or does it just see this as earning a few
cents (while promoting something which doesn't quite fit in its
worldview). FN

PS: It's possible that I'm wrong about this being the news site of
the CBCI, but that's what it says.

PPS: On a similar issue, religious magazines like The Examiner in
Mumbai have played a major role -- even if unwittingly -- in helping
Goans to destroy Goa (i.e. by building and selling and speculating in
ugly and huge, unsustainable building blocks of giant concrete along
the once-scenic coast). Don't religious organisations also have some
kind of ethical duty in terms of what they promote?

Generally, Goanetters have an informal get-together in Goa at the end of
the year. How about one this year too? Could we meet on December 22
(Thursday) since it's not too close to the Xmas break and yet close
enough to ensure that most seasonal Goanetters visiting would be in Goa
already? How about the Mandovi Riviera, where we meet usually, as venue?
Those visiting Goa, do let us know.

Two Goan visiting Priests in Kuwait.

Fr. Jerry Fernandes from Guirim and Fr. Domnick Alvares from Sangolda are
currently visiting Kuwait. They belong to the Society of Pilar - Goa. They
are in Kuwait on the invitation of Tony Correia. All three of them once
were close colleaues and friends at Monte de Guirim School. Tony Correia is
a member of Goan Overseas Association and former president of Kuwait Indian
Foot-ball Federation working for National Bank of Kuwait. In Goa, he is
from Nagoa, Arpora, Bardez. Tony Corriea yesterday celebrated his wedding
anniversary in Kuwait and to mark this occasion he invited both his priest
friends to Kuwait.

Fr. Jerry Fernandes is currently doing missionary work in Megalaya in North
India amongst the tribal people in a very difficult situation. Society of
Pilar has recently established Megalaya as one of the latest missionary
spots where Fr. Fernandes is doing his work. Fr. Domnick Alvares is
currently director of Pre-Novices and Professor of Scriptures at Pilar
Seminary in Goa. They are both first time visiting a country outside India
and they will be in Kuwait as guests of Tony Correia till 18th of this
month. Fr. Alvares is the brother of Tiatrist Rosy Alvares and he sings
also very well. Having all the facial features of his sister, Fr. Alvares
resembles in his voice exactly like his well known sister and this was
noticed today, Friday at Pearl Marzouk Ball Room during the social organised
by Goan Overseas Association. Along with Fr. Jerry Fernandes, Fr. Domnick
Alvares rendered a beautiful Mando with Dulpods and both of them entertained
the gathering very sweetly though for a short period. While singing they
both played their musical instrumwents too, Fr. Alvares Guitar while Fr.
Fernandes Organ. They are both musicians as well as very good singers.
Besides and most of all they are great promoters of Konkani language.

While welcoming them to Kuwait during their stay in Kuwait, I wish them all
the best.

A. Veronica Fernandes,
Kuwait.

Goanet Reader: POLITICS GENESIS OF MOPA (Valmiki Faleiro)

By Valmiki Faleiro
valmikif at gmail.com
-

An extra-curricular activity, that is how a senior minister in the Rane
Cabinet describes the current Mopa imbroglio.

Addressing a press conference on the feast day of Goencho Saib, the honourable
Luizinho Faleiro, Minister for Industries and Education, who swears his heart
bleeds for Goa, blithely dismissed Mopa: he was so busy with his portfolios,
he said, that he had no time for such extra-curricular activity. Extra-
curricular like Mopa, indeed, the sword of Damocles that imperils thousands of
Goenkars across Goa, economically dependent on tourism.

One could excuse Luizinho's flippancy because when cornered, like a kid caught
stealing sugar, he is wont to open his mouth to put his best foot in. It is
one thing to claim credit where none is due, quite another to wash one's his
hands off an act committed while in the seat of the Chief Minister. Luizinho
claimed he had nothing to do with the Mopa decision, while his peers --
rather, adversaries -- allege that Mopa materialized when Luizinho was CM.

Interestingly, Luizinho's interface with the press came a day after Jitendra
Deshprabhu, the Pernem MLA, disclosed that the decision to locate Goa's
civilian airport at Mopa was taken during Luizinho's tenure. More curiously,
Luizinho met the press with Deshprabhu in tow, and claimed the diametric
opposite. It should be granted that Deshprabhu speaks the truth, even if not
the whole truth. So how did Deshprabhu wriggle out of obvious embarrassment?

The previous day, Deshprabhu told the press that Luizinho had brought the
airport to Mopa. Now, in his presence, Luizinho was denying having done that.
Deshprabhu must have kept a straight face when he let off his repartee, I
compliment Mr. Faleiro for saving the airport from going to Maharashtra!

And thereby hangs a tale. Of sordid politics and rank opportunism. Which led
to that hare-brained and entirely ridiculous decision of bringing a totally
unwarranted second airport to tiny Goa, and that too, at Goa's grave peril, on
the doorstep of Maharashtra. Let's briefly peek into its genesis...

In the early '90s, Manmohan Singh, the brilliant Union Finance Minister,
embarked on an ambitious Economic Liberalization Policy aimed at catapulting
a sluggish India into an Asian Tiger economy. To shore up infrastructure
necessary for spurring growth, an Open Skies policy was unveiled. The prime
export air gateway, Mumbai airport, was congested and a committee was
appointed to study remedial steps. The committee recommended that an
international airport be set up midway between Mumbai and Goa, as a measure to
decongest Mumbai.

One national level politico, rated, at the time he occupied the chair, as
India's wealthiest Chief Minister, had invested heavily in beach lands of
Maharashtra's South Konkan coast, just north of Goa. Industrialists and
India's five-star hotel chains (it is rumoured, even some multi-national
ones), had similarly cornered large tracts of land in the region. The place
waited to the opened, an international airport nearby was just the need of the
hour. But *midway between Mumbai and Goa* meant the airport would be located
in south Raigarh -- or at best north Ratnagiri -- districts, a good five hours
away by road from the beaches of Sindhudurg.

One local level politico saw opportunity. His godfather at that point of time
sat in the Chief Minister's chair. Give a politician an opportunity to spend
big money -- from the public exchequer, not his own! -- and he will sell his
soul. I do not need to tell the reader why. That is why gigantic projects are
always welcome -- higher the budget, more the salivation. Mopa, with it's huge
budget, was a heaven send. Goan politicos went for it, hammer and thongs.

Wheels moved and out flew a proposal -- from Goa to Delhi -- that the airport
meant to decongest Mumbai, be located, of all places, at Mopa, Goa! Such a
preposterous proposal may not have found favour in Delhi. Sindhudurga lobbies
were activated. Even more deviously, strings were pulled in the Ministry of
Defence, to get the Navy back the proposal.

The proposal was convenient to all the stakeholders: the politicos in Delhi
and Goa, the industrialists and the hotel lobby that had invested in land in
south coastal Maharashtra and even the Navy -- which would have a prime chunk
of Goa's real estate all to itself at Dabolim, once Mopa came up.

Hello Goanetters

We have many Goans working for this magnificent shipping company, and when
one sees the pictures of these ships one wishes to go on a voyage round the
world on them. I have not seen them in person, but only in pictures and yes
it's a dream to sail on the ship.

[Goanet] Goanet Reader: Fontainhas Follies (V. M. de Malar)

Fontainhas Follies

by V. M. de Malar

Modern life is full of absurdities. Even so, the raucous
complaints aimed at the pleasant Fontainhas Festival of the
Arts stand out as pointless, uninformed and particularly
stupid. It's entirely right that they have been dismissed
immediately, and the threats completely ignored; the entire
civilized world celebrates complex history and nuanced
cultural legacy. Why should we Goans be held hostage by the
lunatic fringe?

A crowning absurdity in the complaints is that this
wholly Goan family event is somehow about the
colonials who were soundly expelled from Indian
soil four decades ago. It's a monumentally idiotic
claim; the artists who're proudly displaying
hundreds of works this week are all talented
locals, the heritage district is distinctly and
inarguably local, this festival is part of a steady
  and distinct cultural renaissance that's
  identifiably a pan-Indian trend, particularly
influenced by the popular Kala Ghoda arts festival
  in nearby Mumbai.

It's also a worldwide phenomenon. Visitors to Paris always
love Montmartre, where an old plaza has been converted for
use by local artists; it's a wonderful open-air atmosphere
with paintings on display in a classic setting.

There is much the same thing in various parts of our country;
in Mahabalipuram, where you can check out age-old sculptures
and wander in and out of displays of brand-new versions, and
Hauz Khas, where art galleries are liberally sprinkled in
among the centuries-old structures of a bygone Delhi.

Heritage architecture is simply a natural partner for the
fine arts; it works very well at this Fontainhas festival.

There are over 40 Goan artists displaying their work, some
interesting and several quite outstanding; it's an
eye-opening experience to wander that fairy-tale neighborhood
with paintings and sculptures juxtaposed with well lit,
beautifully tended, old buildings. Everything hangs together
very well, it adds up to a real regional triumph for our
wonderfully intricate national culture.

Look at the history of the district, which sprang up only in
the beginning of the 19th century, long after the
colonialists had lost their economic steam and extremist
zeal. Fontainhas is a distinctively Goan development, it was
built by a newly self-confident local middle class in a
uniquely Goan style that emerged after centuries of profound
cultural interchange.

Fancifully interpreted European-style facades carry all kinds
of Indian embellishments, and the living spaces within are
delightful evidence of ongoing dialogue between East and
West, between ceremonious requirements and family customs.
This Fontainhas architecture is a priceless element of our
shared heritage; it's irreplaceable testimony of an intense
cultural mingling, and superb expression of native Konkani
ingenuity.

In fact, the claims made by the small group that opposes this
festival of Goan creativity are so moronic that we're forced
to assume that there's some other game afoot. No sane element
in our society could reasonably contend that there is
something Portuguese about a Goan arts festival, organized
and presented by Goans, showcasing the works of more than
forty Goan artists, in that uniquely hybrid Goan heritage
district of Fontainhas, a solid four decades after the
colonialists were booted out.

No sane person could watch the bharatanatyam performance
under cloudy Indian skies this past Monday in Fontainhas, or
observe the happy children getting henna on their hands, or
wander past that amazingly cute little wishing-well guarded
by cheeky plaster poultry, and protest that any or all of
this is a bad thing or somehow alien from our soil.

The carping that's emerged from that unhappy
minority is particularly ill conceived because of
where India finds itself right now. Our country is
surging unstoppably; it is finally taking its
rightful place in the leadership of the community
of nations. We've never had more worldwide interest
in India, in our culture and values and art, and
Goa rides a crest of that wave as our country's
  most prized tourism marketplace.

With all that, why are we paying any attention at all to this
nonsense? What is Portugal in the world, when compared with
India? Are these complainers so weak and feeble-minded that
they can feel threatened by an entirely

England may have to settle for exotic experience
By Simon Briggs in Lahore
(Filed: 09/12/2005)

Squad details
India Tour details

There was a revealing moment on the Today BBC Radio programme last week when
David Graveney, the chairman of selectors, was asked why he thought England
would be able to turn their tour around by beating Pakistan at one-day
cricket.

After an almost imperceptible hesitation Graveney replied: Because of the
players we've got out there. As replies go, this was a little flimsy, but
probably the best option he had available. Certainly he did well to steer
away from England's record.

Discounting the pushovers Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, it is 14 years since
England won a one-day series on opposition soil. That historical curiosity
was a 3-0 win over New Zealand, just as both teams were gearing up for the
1992 World Cup in Australia. The players England had that year really were
something to shout about. From Gooch to Hick to Botham to the young
DeFreitas, they made up probably the best one-day side this country has
produced.

To be fair to Graveney, this year's mob have their merits too. Now that the
piratical Kevin Pietersen has joined the middle order, they have the
potential to scupper some big ships in the Caribbean in the World Cup next
spring. Yet for the immediate challenge of this five-match series against
Pakistan, starting in Lahore tomorrow, they look a little short on
firepower.

On top of the burden of history and the knowledge they will not be seeded in
next year's ICC Champions Trophy in India if they lose, England will be
battling with an injury list that has deprived them of four first-choice
players, including their captain.

Noises from within the camp after the losing Test series suggest a
frustrated state of mind, exacerbated by blanket security and hotel fever.
All of which strikes a direct contrast with Pakistan, a team revelling in
their new-found potency.

This series may come to be seen as no more than a learning experience for
England, and an exotic one at that. When they last played one-dayers in
Pakistan five years ago, the first match was disrupted by dew, the second by
swarms of flying insects (which Andrew Flintoff remembers as being as big as
his hand), and the third by clouds of tear gas.

The only survivors from that tour are Flintoff, the likely BBC sports
personality of the year on Sunday, and Marcus Trescothick, captain in
Michael Vaughan's absence.

• The England and Wales Cricket Board have announced the final itinerary of

changes. They have significantly eased England's travelling schedule,
confirming that both teams will travel by direct flights from venue to
venue, he said.

Asians in New Zealand

Wairua Consulting, Waitakere City, Aotearoa/New Zealand

Sel-description: Asians are a growing population in New Zealand. By
2016 they are expected to make up 9% of New Zealand's and 20% of the
Auckland Region's total population. There is debate about the utility
of such a term, which is strategic on one hand and disguises
difference on the other. This page has links to 'Asian' websites both
in New Zealand and the rest of the world. 'Asian' is a term that has
differing definitions depending on the geographical context in which it
is used. Here it defines a category under which Indians are subsumed
but more commonly in New Zealand it is used in reference to those of
South East Asian and Chinese origin.

BLOOD AND NEMESIS: AN IMAGINATIVE STORY OF GOA'S TURBULENT TIME

A review by Cornel DaCosta

On beginning to read this novel by a Goan author and set in
Goa, my memory was drawn to a period between August and
December 1961 that I spent in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya,
whilst temporarily away from my hometown of Mombasa. I had
stayed at a relatively new up-market YMCA, made new friends,
including fellow Goans, others from the Indian sub-continent,
and a few Brits, Germans, Dutch and Danes.

One was a particularly jovial young Portuguese gentleman.
Television was not yet available to us, but in the main, BBC
radio kept us informed about news around the world.

On the morning of December 19, 1961, on radio, I
heard the dramatic news that, after 461 years, the
Portuguese rulers had been ousted from Goa by the
Indian armed forces. I recall being quite elated by
this news. I had always opposed colonialism in
principle and felt happy over the removal of the
colonial yoke in my ancestral homeland of Goa.

Over breakfast that morning, it became clear that most of my
new friends were rather excited and seemingly pleased with
the news. However, the Portuguese gentleman in our midst wept
inconsolably. When he calmed down, he explained that it was
not so much the news about the Indian occupation of Goa
that really upset him. He felt that this would have occurred
sooner or later, because of the obduracy of the Portuguese
Prime Minister Salazar. Rather, it was the manifestation of
joy in me and fellow Goans, that morning that upset him
greatly.

How, he asked, still in tears, could you, my Portuguese
brothers celebrate the Indian takeover of Goa? He was pained
even more when I told him, as gently as I could, that as a
Goan, I was never pro-Portuguese as he had perhaps imagined
but an Indian at heart.

On continuing with Ben Antao's recently-released novel 'Blood
and Nemesis', it further struck me that, despite visiting Goa
several times from my subsequent abode in England, I had not
followed the political changes in Goa too closely over the
years. Instead, I was strongly drawn to study the abomination
of caste practice among significant numbers of Catholic
Goans, and also, to explore the effects of mass tourism on
the paradise that is Goa.

The novel, however, captured my attention to the dramatic
events leading to the incorporation of Goa into the republic
of India and the roles of many individuals there who were
for, or against, the expulsion of the Portuguese from the
territory of Goa.

We thus get a vivid account of many antagonisms and
actions centred mainly in Goa, over a relatively
short historical period, up to, and soon after
December 1961. The Indian military action is
presented in considerable detail and the many
characters involved are very real in terms of the
  actual events of the time.

In this very absorbing story, we note the ever-vigilant
police presence represented by Jovino Colaco and his
immediate boss Gaspar Dias. Both are determined to suppress
any Goan anti-Portuguese sentiments and political activity
sympathetic to Indian nationalism.

They take it upon themselves, on behalf of the authoritarian
Portuguese administration, to bait freedom fighters, capture
them, physically abuse them and then incarcerate them in the
infamous Aguada jail in Goa. Their particular quarry from May
1955 was a fellow Goan, Santan Barreto. They kept a close eye
on him and on his friends who usually spent their leisure
time at Bombay Cafe in the town centre of Margao in south Goa.

This cat and mouse strategy is captured brilliantly in the
novel. It depicts Jovino, the policeman invariably on his
motorbike, as a power-hungry individual, with a weakness for
drink, gambling and prostitutes.

He is determined to amass wealth corruptly and to gain
promotion at work, having been told by his superiors that his
advancement would depend on his success in capturing Goan
freedom fighters who operated clandestinely.

In contrast, Santan, fired by a powerful desire to rid Goa of
the Portuguese presence becomes increasingly elusive but very
active in the subversive underground political network. He
surreptitiously outsmarts and frustrates Jovino for a long
time. He also gets emboldened by minor skirmishes against the
police, and with fellow conspirators, manages to attack
isolated police posts to obtain firearms and ammunition.
However, his luck

I just thougth of mentioning this guy's shop -Music House.

When I told him that I wanted to buy about a doz VCDs of same type for free
distribution
he was so generous to offer me 20% discount. In all I bought 12+26 VCDs from
him and he
offered me 10 to 20% discount on all others too, even on those which were not
marketed by
him.

When asked the same at my regular shops at Panaji, one said no discount as
there is
hardly any margin and the other said 5% discount. Where as, today I found,
margin per VCD
is upto Rs.50.

Should you wish to buy any VCDs in GOA please go to this guy's shop and mention
my name
'Joe' and take Rs.10 off per VCD or buying in bulk then Rs.20+ off per VCD. If
you do go
there and you did not get the discount then pl let me know. Or write to me
before going
there. This offer may be valid for limited period only. But pl write me.

The discount which I got will offcourse, pass on to all VCD lovers for whom I
bought
these 26 VCDs so far. (likely to buy at least 15 more by tomorrow morning)

At present, the Centre has a similar model of services in the north easter
region where Alliance Air operates in different centres. As per the model,
states will need to pay Indian Airlines for operating within the states. The
potential for intra-state service, industry analysts said was huge given the
increasing earning capacity of class B C cities.

But Goa with all its hang ups, external and internal, is sure to miss the
flight unless the cobwebs are cleared soon.

I have just seen the DVD -Aleesha at VP SINARIS
 Panaji.
Infact, its VCD DVD released same time but there
is no demand for DVDs in
 GOA or India
as most bollywood movies etc are sold on VCDs hence
 less publicity.

Aleesha, will be the first Konkani DVD so far.
There may be others which may have released abroad.

DVDs are always more expensive than VCDs

In this case, it is Rs.299, where as the same on VCD
 is Rs.199
