RE: [Goanet] Interview with Dr. Filomena Sarawati Giese
Hello George and Fred, Thanks for the letting me know about the interview with Dr. Filomena Giese. I was happy to read about her new perspectives on Goa in the light of her travels through North India. I was happy to know of the roles her parents played in developing her Goan Identity. However, I was surprised that Filomena made no mention of her sister Ligia Brito who like her has been a dynamic force for Goan causes in the San Francisco Bay Area. May their tribe increase. May Blessed Joseph Vaz continue to bless Goan causes, especially his canonization! Fr. Ariosto Coelho www.SpiritualDirection.org Fred, thanks for your interview with Dr. Filomena Sarawati Giese. Whatever the case may be, permit me to offer my two cents in this discussion. I would count myself among the 65 millions or so who have read or heard this fictional novel. I have heard it on an audeo CD as I drove around the San Francisco Bay Area in 2005 and found it intriguing! Father Jonathan Morris says Trapdoors always lead down. Water seldom goes up. Like Augustine of Hippo we make attempts to empty the ocean into our own little wells or in the words of Albert Schweitzer Men searching for the historical Jesus look into a deep well, see a reflection of themselves, and call it Lord. None of us has all the knowledge, but we make attempts to tap into that consciousness [trap or tool?] which leads the seeker to experience personally This is Infinite and That is Intimate (Brihadāranyaka Upanishad 5.1.1). My reflections flow from the history of the evolution of consciousness [change unfloding/enfolding - evolution or involution as described by Sri Aurobindu, Theillard de Chardin and others]: A- Jesus of Nazareth, Paul of Tarsus and many others were instrumental in creating a new AWAKENING, which gave rise to Christ with its ethos, culture and civilization. B- The new consciousness as evidenced by the popularity [65 million strong] of the Da Vinci Code, in my opinion, seeks to BALANCE history with the contemporary research, needs and values beyond the accepted/limited Christ of History and Faith - a quest. C- Let us hope that this quest CENTERS on the best within each conscious human being and religious/spiritual culture in the ever shrinking global village, rises beyond insecurity, greed and selfishness and reaches out with greater love to a Civilization with a Heart [Bede Griffiths 1906-1994] towards a Planetary Ecology of Compassion [Gospel of Matthew 25/40], the Golden Rule advocated by most religious and spiritual traditions, D- That once again we may take DELIGHT in and sing with both the heavenly angels and down-to- earth shepherds. This is my wish and prayer Glory to God in Heaven and Peace on Earth to People of Good Will [Lk 2/14]. This is my vision of and mission for the Contemporary Church -Community of Believrs! I agree with a very humble soul, Mahatma Gandhi [1869-1948] who wrote We must be the change we want to see in the world. This change is what I strive for. It is my constant struggle as I seek to Awaken, Balance and Center Delight in the best within every individual and group where the soul glows and grows gracefully with gratitude. Let us be united in supporting one another in this Wonder-filled Adventure of Faith as it unfolds and enfolds in history and eternity! I hope this has helped. Let me know. God bless, Father Ariosto www.SpiritualDirection.org From Foxnews: Fact and Fiction: 'The Da Vinci Code' by Father Jonathan Morris Have you seen the double trapdoor through which Da Vinci critics are falling headfirst? It's hard to miss. Both flaps are adorned with tantalizing signs. The first says, Burn the book, it's the devil. The second laughs mockingly or innocently, Relax, it is just fiction, after all. Trapdoors always lead down. Here's looking up: A little knowledge is dangerous, Mr. Brown, for religion and for life. But a lot of knowledge (and a little humility) makes wise men; men and woman who see God not only in scientific gaps, but in their ability to grasp, if only in part, the grandeur of creation, including themselves. I hope this has helped. Let me know. God bless, Father Jonathan -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. ## # If Goanet stops reaching you, contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # Want to check the archives? http://www.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet/# # Please keep your discussion/tone polite, to reflect respect to others # ## Hello, Let me wish you a very happy feast of St. Francis Xavier. When the history of the world and of institutions, societies, communities, families and individuals is finally written, the dominant theme will be the degree to which people have lived not by their socialized conscience but by their divine conscience writes Stephen Covey in 'The 8th Habit' (2004). This holiday and Christmas season is yet another wonderful opportunity for us to focus on our DIVINE CONSCIENCE and consciousness. A 2005 calendar I received from the Salesians of Don Bosco in Mumbai reminds me that they celebrate 99 YEARS of Salesian presence and activity in India (1906-2005). I, too, would like to thank God for the various sons of St. John Bosco (1815-1888) who have been a part of my life since 1960, when I was led by my parents to Liceu Dom Bosco in Pangim, Goa. As I look forward to 2006 I would like to thank God for my grand uncle FR. ARIOSTO XAVIER COELHO (1861-1923) who was God's instrument in welcoming the first Salesians to India in 1906, to establish their first orphanage and, eventually, take over the Sacred Heart Parish in Tanjore in 1915. The story of the growth of the Salesians in India over these hundred years is phenomenal and bears witness to lives lived in consonance with the divine conscience. If you want to read more about this Goan connection, please go to http://www.spiritualdirection.org/Newsletter-Glow04Winter.htm and read the short story entitled TANJORE, THEIR FINAL DESTINATION. Vivian and I wish you JOY during this season and a new awakening of your divine conscience throughout the New Year. RE: [Goanet]BRIEfnCOUNTERS: It's all on at the Don Bosco Oratory, Panjim
Hello Fred and George, Fred, I would have mised your reference to me had it not been for George who broguht it to my attention. George, I was a Salesian of Don Bosco for 25 years from 1967 upto 1994 when I decided to be an incardinated Catholic Priest with the White Robed Monks of St. Benedict. I am not a Benedictine. I'm not sure why Fred is asking for my opinion. It is true that I was in some way responsible for Salesian activities in Goa as the only Councilor to the Salesian Provincial of Bombay from 1982 upto 1988, held the Power of Attorney on behalf of Pia Sociedade Salesiana de Sao Joao Bosco in Goa and was in-charge of all Court cases, starting with the Supreme Court in New Delhi in October 1981. As I recall those years I can say that the direction of Salesian acitivities was for the education of the poorer section of society. Eventually the social situation of these kids improved and these moved up socially and economically. They, then, wanted their children to have a similar or better education. During my recent meetings and conversations with the Salesians in Mumbai and Goa, I was told that the Salesians are reassessing their educational activities and pastoral presences to answer the needs of the communities where they find themselves. Hence, one might witness a variety of activities where the Salesians can provide pioneering leadership. As directly responsible for the development of the Don Bosco Agro-Educational Complex in Sulcorna from 1978-87, I envisaged and harnessed the energies of the Salesians and others to 1. reach out to the poor farmers at the Farm and in the surrounding vilages regardless of their faith traditions, 2. have a seed-bank and other agricultural facilities in order to better their crops, 3. conduct TRYSEM courses to help rural youth obtain employment and better salaries; 4. start a Farm High School to improve the lot of their children, and 5. establish a mini hospital to improve their health. My visit to Sulcorna and surrounding villages makes me proud to say that the Salesians at the Complex are still involved with the poor and the young. It is to be noted that not all the Salesian institutions and works should be directly dedicated to the poorest of the poor. It is a question of balancing the needs of the society and church where they find themselves. In Goa, the Salesians have a number of activities which, I think, reflect their mission to preach the gospel to the poor and the young and the passion of Don Bosco give me souls and take away the rest. May their tribe increase as they struggle to establish the KONKAN Province. This is just my opinion. I hope someone with more direct experience is able to give you the real and most current picture. You may contact Fr. Romulo Noronha or Fr. George Quadros [EMAIL PROTECTED]. I wonder whether you'd be interested in my latest Oil Paintings http://www.spiritualdirection.org/Publication-2004.htm and Newsletter http://www.spiritualdirection.org/Newsletter-Glow.htm. They seem to be working to use the resources they have to the optimum, and thus reaching out to many more whom they otherwise could have worked with. Their centre at Loutolim, targeted entirely for drop-outs, could be very useful to many in today's Goa. If only more could see this as a useful option. Correct me if I'm wrong, Ariosto. Or does one just notice such things when one's kids are in that age-group? In this case, *such things* refers to a program that could be of interest to many in middle-class Goa. It was a pleasant surprise to see the Don Bosco grounds in Panjim teeming with life on Tuesday. They've started what they call their great mega event. It's a mix of the best in education, sports, music, spirituality and extra-curricular activities. It is open to all, regardless of which school you're studing in or what's your religious background. This summer holidays, Don Bosco's will offer training in Basic English for primary students (the ban-English bigotedness at this level of schooling makes such an attempt useful), tutions for Std X students prior to going in for one of the most stressful exams in their lives, and public-speaking for high-schoolers. There will also be seminars: on teenagers' problems and how to face them, a leadership course, and even *how to make the best of your brains*. With all the untapped talent here in Goa, we could do with a lot of that! For higher secondary
RE: [Goanet]Do we need a Patriarch of the Indies?
Viva, Teotonio. I second your interpretation of *desceu e habitou entre nós*! I'm confident that the new Bishop Neri shares this view. Moima ani Xanti. I would be most happy if the new Archbishop would drop the title of patriarch and the reference to his residence and place of work as *Paço Patriarcal*. If St. Catherine could cease to be the patronness of the Archdiocese (she marked the day of the conquest of Goa by Afonso de Albuquerque on a 25th November) and be replaced by Bl. Joseph Vaz, why not drop a colonial title that was granted by Vatican as a diplomatic sop at a time when it decided to create the independent hierarchy of India in 1886? Also when the Cardinalate was granted to Bombay archbishop against the strong feelings voiced by the then Patriarch of Goa, D. José da Costa Nunes (who even retired on these grounds and was kept contented with a largely ornamental post of vice-camerlengo at the Vatican), Goa archdiocese of the Portuguese Padroado was pacified with a Golden Rose as a mark of recognition of its historical services to the Church! The designation *Paco Patriarcal* should be retained, but not as Archbishop s residence and office! At a time when the decision for creating Rachol Art Museum was being considered, I had suggested that the present Patriarchal palace would be a good site for it! The Museum did not last in Rachol, and fortunately is more visited at its present location at Santa Monica. The efforts and initiative of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation were not in vain. The *Paco Patriarcal * could retain its name as an historical monument and house the archives of the archdiocese. Would it not be much more convenient for priests (and lay faithful) coming from distant parishes to meet the Patriarch and other functionaries down in the city, rather than having to climb the hill or pay for motorbike rickshawas or other means of conveyance? Instituto Piedade in the heart of the city of Panjim already belongs to the archidiocese (though the Government was claiming its ownership some years back) and could be re-structured to suit the needs of the Archbishop and his administrative services. Symbolically, we could then say that the Patriarch *desceu e habitou entre nós*! It could set a living example of Incarnation that we Catholics believe in! Otherwise, we could have just another post-colonial avatar! ## # Send submissions for Goanet to [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # PLEASE remember to stay on-topic (related to Goa), and avoid top-posts # # More details on Goanet at http://joingoanet.shorturl.com/ # # Please keep your discussion/tone polite, to reflect respect to others # ##

RE: [Goanet]Sr.Amabel,A.C. passes away.
Hello Friends, I met Sr. Amabel in 1978 at the Mother House of the Apostolic Carmel at Jayaqnagar in Bangalore. As a newly ordained Salesian Priest I was completing my Pastoral Training at Kristu Jyuoti college in Bangalore and had just been assigned to work with and for the little, the lowly and the lost in Sulcorna, Goa. I was interested in Mother Teresa's option for the poorest of the poor as well as Sr. Amabel's work for Anawim: The Poor of Yahweh. It goes without saying that she impressed me. As we continued to share about our common calling to follow the Lord, I realized that we had other commonalities, too. We both hailed from Aquem Baixo near Navelim-Margao. Our families were friends and related with much affection. In fact, her brother Luis was our Family Doctor and had treated me on a number of occasions. I would like to pay my respects to this great soul! May her tribe increase. I'm confident that she will continue to draw many more blessings on her religious family as well as on Goa. My thoughts and prayers go to her sister Maria Rita and other members of her family who are grieving this loss. RE: [Goanet]Goa's Patron Saint:From SFX to Bl..Jose Vaz
Mogall Ixttamno, It is a long time since I've engaged in a GoaNet discussion. Along with my parents and many other faithful in Goa I've prayed incessantly for the canonizaton of Fr. Jose Vaz. My studies at the Vatican revealed to me that the Roman Catholic process of canonization is a very complex one. It may or may not have much to do with holiness, wholeness or sanctity. There are studies to show that politics plays a big role in the making of saints. There are more Italian, Spanish and French saints in certain historical periods than from any other geographical area. Other studies throw light on the economic factors. Much money is needed to beatify or canonize an individual who either has to come from a rich family or have a religious society that can afford to pay for the costs. One of the reasons for saint making in contemorary society is to provide models of holiness. Someone once remarked, and with some truth, that if Francis Xavier lived in our day, he probably would not be a candidate for beatification and canonization. This is not to suggest that the Goencho Saib doesn't merit veneration; he was indeed a heroic personality and continues to bring people closer to God! At this stage in my life, it doesn't really matter to me personally if Joseph Vaz Naik is canonized or not. However, as a Goan, I feel that Blessed Joseph Vaz Naik, whose image is to be found in the new cathedral of Los Angeles in California, is worthy of international recogniton and veneration as suggested by Filomena Saraswati Giese in her writings. I agree with those who suggest that there are more saints than those canonized by the Roman Catholic Church. I would like to conclude with the following story. A Muslim fakir dies and is brought to St. Peter. After examining his life, St. Peter tells him to enter heaven and proceed to Room 109. He also warns him to walk softly and quietly as he passes by Room 8. Next, a Hindu sadhu comes to the Pearly Gates. St. Peter finds him an honest and a charitable man, tells him to enter heaven and proceed to Room 99. He also warns him to walk softly and quietly as he passes by Room 8. Then, a Buddhist monk is brought to St. Peter. He, too, is found heavenworthy. St. Peter tells him to enter heaven and proceed to Room 79. He also warns him to walk softly and quietly as he passes by Room 8. Finally, a Baptist minister comes to St. Peter, who tells him, too, to enter heaven and proceed to Room 59. He also warns him to walk softly and quietly as he passes by Room 8. Curious, he dares to ask St. Peter Why Room 8? Oh, replies St. Peter, that's where the Roman Catholics are, and they think that they are the only ones in heaven. Mog asoom di ani vaddom di. [Goanet]Happy Independence Day
Hello, May I wish all Indians a very Happy Independence Day and all Catholics a very Happy Feast of the Assumption. Though Mary's Assumption to heaven is a theological assumption, I would like to share a thought that I read regularly at the PowerGym in Redwood City CA. It reads I know of no more encouraging fact than the ability of man to elevate his life by conscious effort. May we rise to our highest potential. May I avail of this auspicious day to introduce the updated website and may I also request your input for realizing Moima Ashram in Goa http://www.spiritualdirection.org/MA0.htm. Thanks. RE: [Goanet] Ariosto... remembered in Muskaorem
Dear Dominic, You have a wonderful way of capturing the spirit present in you. Your way with words and with canvas often transcend the way of a man of the cloth. Ariosto Coelho http://www.spiritualdirection.org/Glo03Summer.htm Today, a quarter century has slipped by since we last met. A current meeting, however, is neither mandated nor exigent in order to reassess or re-validate Ariosto's compassionate predisposition. Some people change over time, others change the times they live in, and Fred's post reminds us that good deeds come from the resources of goodwill and have a perpetual tendency to reincarnate in the wavelength of memory and gratitude.
