(GT) GOAN IRON ORE EXPORTS TOUCH A NEW HIGH: The iron ore exports from Goa have touched an all time high, in terms of quantity, during the financial year 2003-2004, to 30.7 million tonne, a net increase of over 50 per cent of the total iron ore exported from the country amounting to 60 million tonne. A Goa Mineral Ore Exporters Association source pointed out that the rise in iron ore exports was mainly due to the increase in demand from China.India is the third largest exporter of iron ore after Australia and Brazil, who together constitute almost 70 per cent of the total iron ore exports in the global market. (NT) IFFI ROW LANDS IN COURT: The Nitoll Jinn Trust and the Goa Su-Raj Party have gone to court challenging the Goa (Issue of Single Point Clearances for International Film Festival) Ordinance 2004 passed in April this year as well as the developmental works done in relation to IFFI. (H) NOTHING HANKY-PANKY, CLAIMS GOVT: The State government has strongly defended the ordinance issued last month for speedy clearance of IFFI projects and has also asserted that necessary rules and regulations are being adhered to while executing the festival-related projects. (H) 'ENSURE SAFETY AT CONSTRUCTION SITES': The Goa Can (Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network) has urged the district collector, South, to ensure that the government departments or agencies undertake safety measure at construction sites. A delegation of Goan Can, led by its co-ordinator Roland Martins, called on the Collector, JB Singh, on Thursday morning and underlined the need to follow safety measures. (H) MANDREKAR PUTS MAPUSA PI IN TIGHT SPOT: Mapusa PI Sammy Tavares was summoned to the police headquarters yesterday and given a dressing down after Agriculture Minister Dayanand Mandrekar lodged a complaint that the PI abused him on 2 May at the station. It is also learnt that a high-level inquiry has been ordered by the Deputy Inspector General of Police. (GT) WORK ON MUNGUL BRIDGE HALTED: All work on the Mungul bridge-linking Margao to Colva-came to a complete halt on Thursday morning after consumer rights activists demanded forthwith stoppage of construction activity. The activists attached to 'Goa Can' and Betalbatim Civic and Consumer Forum maintained that undertaking bridge work on the eve of monsoons would cause tremendous disruption and dislocation of life for the residents of the localities of Mungul, Pedda-Benaulim, Colva, Seraulim, Betalbatim, Majorda and Murda since the bridge connects them to Margao. (H) POLICE TRAP RANGE FOREST OFFICER: Anti-Corruption Bureau sleuths recently raided a Range Forest Officer attached to the Goa Forest Development Corporation at Ponda. A police team raided the house of RFO Mohan Gaonkar and recovered auction sale papers, permissions to cut trees, receipt books, a salary register and bank documents. The police also recovered Forest department rubber stamps, property sale deeds and court documents. (GT) SC STAYS HC ORDER: The Supreme Court yesterday stayed the order of the Bombay High Court at Goa quashing the appointment of 31 police sub-inspectors. The brochure's Konkani language could not be read properly and the activists feel that this was an insult meted out to Konkani language. (Edit in GT) REBELLION OF THE AVC GAONCARS: The uprising in Assolna coincided with Adil Shah's invasion of Salcete where his troops destroyed several churches and put to death a number of Christians. However, superior Portuguese weapons crushed both the rebellion and the invasion. As soon as Adil Shah freshly concluded peace, trouble erupted in Cuncolim. The villagers, whose hopes were blighted by the failure of Adil Shah to retake Salcete and save them from the religious persecution and tyranny of the Jesuit Missionaries, took matters into their own hands. Mandava's project title is 'Comparative assessment and evaluation of clinical legal aid practiced in United States' and will study the role of alternate dispute resolution as an effective tool for dispute settlement. Ermelinda has been awarded a two-month Fulbright fellowship for the Environmental Information Systems/Reporting. Her project is titled 'Ecological Sanitation for Urban Areas'.
