GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 08 January 2004 PRESIDENT KALAM'S GOA TOUR: President of India APJ Kalam will arrive in Goa on 12 January at about 5 pm and is likely to address the Indo-US workshop on S&T to counter terrorism, at Taj Exotica-Benaulim at 7 pm. On 13 January, the President will visit the Sanjay School for Handicapped at Porvorim at 10 am where he will visit hold an interaction for about 10 minutes with 12 selected students. The school presently has 385 handicapped students, which perhaps is the largest such school in Asia. (GT)
MILD TREMORS ROCK CANACONA: Mild tremors rocked the Canacona taluka, on the afternoon of January 7, sending shock waves among the residents. However, there was no report of any loss of life and damage to property. The Meteorological Observatory in Panaji has recorded low intensity tremor, around 80 kms away from Panaji, at 4.07 pm. (NT) GOANETTERS' GATHERING: A group of GoaNetters gathered at the Kala Academy campus yesterday evening, exchanging news, views, etc. Naturally all eyes were on young Herman Carneiro, the soft-spoken originator of Goanet. Herman recalled some of the names of the Goanet veterans like Marlon Menezes. Fred explained a bit of how the mailing lists work and the type of net-research done by Eddie Fernandes of Goan Voice-UK. Cecil presented fragrant flowers to Herman as well as to Rene. The "Goa Day man" celebrated his birthday (75th?) yesterday. He cut the delicious cake and the Netters sang "Happy Birthday" to him. (GoaNOW) MPT BREAKS ORE-HANDLING RECORD: Mormugao Port Trust's Mechanical Ore Handling Plan has surpassed its own record during the calendar year 2003. A total of 11.47 million MT of iron ore was loaded by the shipping section, surpassing the previous record of 11.7 million MT in the year 2002. A record quantity of 11.40 million MT was unloaded by the receiving system, as against its own earlier record of 10.45 million MT in the year 2002. In another milestone, the receiving section unloaded the highest quantity of 14.18 lakh tons during the month of December 2003. On 5 January, 2004, a quantity of 1,36,800 MT was loaded on board "MV Dahlia", surpassing the earlier highest of 1,36,700 MT on "MV Capsia" on 15 November 2001. (GT) LEGISLATION FOR SEZS: The government, on January 7, cleared a major Central legislation to provide duty-free environment, single-window clearance and more tax incentives to Special Economic Zones (SEZs) to make exports the engine of economic growth. As many as 23 SEZs have been approved so far, of which eight are functional, while three more--at Indore, Jaipur and Kolkata--will become operational soon. (NT) WATER PURIFICATION PLANTS: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, said that the State has achieved about 80 per cent success in solving the shortage of drinking water problem and the government also proposes to set up mini-water purification plants at different places where there are good water resources. (NT) INTERNATIONAL KITE FESTIVAL: For the second year on the trot the International Kite Festival will begin in Goa on January 16. This year the very colourful beach-event will be a three-day affair at the Miramar Beach, with kite makers and experts from the USA, France, Holland, Austria, South Africa and Australia participating along with Indian kite enthusiasts. The organizers, Nomad Travels, have tied up with the Corporation of the City of Panaji and the Goa Tourism. The beach will also come alive with the sound of various bands. FONTAINHAS FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS: The second Fontainhas Festival of the Arts, organised by the Goa Heritage Action Group, will be inaugurated at Fontainhas-Mala in Panjim on January 10 near the Phoenix fountain. The grand festival, which will last till January 17, will be "an art lover's delight", with residents of Fontainhas-Mala opening up their heritage homes for artists to display their creative work. In the Masters' Retrospective, great Indian masters like Meera Devidayal, Rekha Rodwittye, Dr Sarayu Doshi, Prafulla Dahandukar, Jehangir Sabaval and Reena Saini Kallat, will talk about their artistic journeys. There will be world cuisine at street cafes and live performances in the charming heritage locale of Goa. TO ATTRACT TOURISTS: Two major events-the Fontainhas Festival of the Arts and the Goa Kite Carnival, being organised in Panjim this month--are likely to find a place in Goa's calendar of events and festivals, disclosed Director of Tourism Mr N Suryanarayana at a press conference in Panjim on January 7. The two events, which are being held for the second consecutive year have evoked an overwhelming response and are now being looked at as platforms for attracting tourists to Goa. (H) 5 FOREIGNERS DIE IN ARAMBOL IN FOUR WEEKS: According to Pernem Police, one Nigel Wills, a 50-year-old British national, was found dead in the Arambol market, taking the death toll of foreigners in four weeks to five unnatural deaths reported at the Arambol police station. On December 10, a 23-year-old French national was found dead; on December 8, a 38-year-old Italian Martin Karlo was found dead in a rented house of Gabriel Fernandes; on December 16 one Austrian national Rindth Adnriya was found dead in a rented house. One more Italian national was found in a serious condition and latter succumbed to the injuries. (H) IFFI 2004 MULTIPLEX WORK BEGINS: Just three main heritage structures on the extensive five-acre Goa Medical College complex at Campal will be retained as work begins tomorrow on razing of the newer structures for the construction of a multiplex for the IFFI 2004. The neo-classical and Gothic style building (b 1927) which housed the oldest medical institution in Asia, the Marquinezes Palace built in 17-2 and another vintage building, which accommodates the offices of Food and Drugs Administration will be spared, reliable sources stated. (GT) STAFF SHORTAGE HITS MUSEUM: It's meant to be a state- of-the-art museum, but the State of the staff is adversely affecting the upkeep and expansion of the Goa State Museum's plans. A visit to the Centre during the on-going museum week, has revealed that the short-staff is a major bottleneck at present. (H) GOA OUT OF STAMP PAPER SCAM: Even far-flung West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh have felt the tremors of the 'stamp-quake'. Yet Goa, which is so tantalizingly close to Maharashtra, which is the epicenter of the multi-crore fake stamp-paper scandal, has gone virtually unscathed by it, at least up until this date, due to compactness of this State's vending chain, and the relatively miniscule size of the market, as also the untainted reputation of the State's vending agents. (H) "TIBET DAY" AT XAVIER'S COLLEGE: St Xavier's College in Mapusa will celebrate a "Tibet Day" at the college campus at 12 noon on 10 January, to raise awareness about Tibet and also as a part of the college Ruby Jubilee celebrations this year. The "Day" will include an exhibition of Tibetan artifacts, books, music and costumes. The Tibetan students will speak on Tibetan issues and will present a cultural programme of their music and dance. A food stall will serve authentic Tibetan food. YOUNG WRITERS' MEET: Sahitya Akademi in collaboration with the Konkani Akademi and Institute Menezes Braganza, has organised on January 13 and 14 'young writers meet'. Around 22 young writers from all over India from different languages have been invited for the meet. The inaugural programme will be open to the writers in Goa who are interested in attending the same. (H) HANDICRAFTS EXHIBITION IN MAPUSA; "Aparant Maand 2004", Goa's biggest handicraft, art and cultural exposition, organised by the Goa Handicrafts Rural and Small Scale Industries Development Corporation, will be held at Bodgeshwar Devasthan grounds, Mapusa, from January 23 to 30.
