GCA CONDEMNS PENDSE REPORT: The Goa Cricket Association managing committee
yesterday said the Justice Pendse Commission report was a 'political report'
and accused the government of plotting to appoint an administrator to take
control of the GCA. The Association also accused the one-man commission of
not substantiating the claims made in the report. (GT)

PRIVATE TEAM TO BUILD GOA'S IFFI COMPLEX: A private consortium will be
floated to put together the estimated investment of Rs.100 crore needed to
build a permanent set up for the International Film Festival of India in
Goa, IIFI Director Neelam Kapoor said in Thiruvananthapuram on December 17.
Kapoor said that a complex with at least five state-of-the-art theatres,
projection facilities, conference rooms and a permanent office for the IFFI
would have to be built in Goa. (H)

MINE CLOSURE PLEA: Bombay High Court at Goa disposed off a writ petition
filed by a mining firm challenging the State government's order regarding
stoppage of all mining operations in Neturlim wild-life sanctuary recently.

OCEANARIUM PROJECT FALLS FLAT: There's a new twist to the oceanrium complex
project at Miramar as the State government, after exactly seven long years,
has decided to terminate the lease agreement with Goa Oceanarium Pvt Ltd and
has taken back the possession of the land from the lessee. The mega
oceanarium complex project which was proposed to be set up next to the Goa
Science Centre at Miramar had been entrusted to a consortium of Australian
and Indian companies, in a lease agreement signed in 1996. The lessee was
unable to undertake the project for financial reasons and was granted an
extension of time to complete the same. (H)

NEW SCHEME FOR PANCHAYATS: The State government has decided to formulate a
new scheme "Goa Gram Samrudhi Yojana" to supplement the present Central
scheme-Sampoorna Gramin Rozjar Yogana to all 190 village panchayats in the

DABOLIM: UNLIMITED PASSENGERS, LIMITED FLIGHTS: Nearly eight lakh passengers
pass through Goa's Dabolim airport each year. But the restrictions imposed
by the Indian Navy mean that only limited slots are available for civilian
flights landing and taking off from there. Incidentally, Dabolim is soon to
be allowed to receive an "unlimited number of flights" from 10 ASEAN
(South-East Asian countries, besides Sri Lanka. This was indicated by Union
Minister of State Rajiv Pratap Rudy on December 16, in reply to a written
question raised in the Parliament by Rajya Sabha MP Eduardo Faleiro. (H)

POSTAL HISTORY OF PORTUGUESE INDIA: Shortages prompted Portuguese
authorities in India to bisect stamps and recirculate them. Letters were
often sent in three covers in separate ships fearing pirates' attacks. And
letters were rarely undelivered during their rule. These interesting details
can be found in a book on "Postal History of Portuguese India", authored by
Umesh Kakkeri. The book was released at the hands of Dr Sergio Mascarenhas
de Almeida, Delegate of Fundacao Oriente in India on December 17. (GT)

ELECTIONS, AHOY? Taking a casual look at the flood of promises gushing out
from official lips, one would have though that our politicians are preparing
for an election. Not just a parliamentary election-in which Goa has two
inconsequential Lok Sabha seats. But a closely-fought, match-fixed,
every-vote-counts assembly election. Is Goa really heading for another
mid-term election?...To be fair, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has ruled
out that there were any moves to dissolve the Goa assembly to have assembly

YOUTH FALL VICTIM TO JOB RACKET: In yet another overseas recruitment racket,
some 72 youth are alleged to have been cheated of nearly Rs.50 lakh by a
firm, Auttoman Shipping Management, which operated an office at Manguirish
Building in Panjim. Panjim police have booked a case of cheating against a
Kerala native, George Thomas, who is said to be a director of the firm. (H)

AFTER KALAM HEARS MERCY PLEA: For almost five years, Olaf Wuemlig (42) had
only the walls of his cell at Aguada to stare at. Today the German breathes
fresh air, thanks entirely to the success of the mercy petition filed on his
behalf by his consular officials before President APJ Kalam. (H)

KONKANI COURSE IN KANNADA SCRIPT: Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr will conduct
a Kannada Script course from 5017 January at Alto Porvorim. This intensive
course intends to equip Konkani speakers to read and write Konkani in the

FOREIGN NATIONAL FOUND DEAD: Pernem police said the body of Austrian Rindth
Andriyas was found in the rented room, belonging to one Luis Rodrigues of

SECRETARIAT TO BE SHIFTED BY MAY: Goa's Secretariat-the seat of power-is to
be moved from Adil Shah Palace to the new Secretariat complex, facing the
legislative assembly complex in Porvorim by May end next year, it was
tentatively decided at a high-level meeting on December 17. (H)

HOUSE BURGLED: Burglars, taking advantage of the absence of a family, broke
into a city house and made off with gold ornaments worth Rs.55,000. Alzira
Mendes complained to the police that while she was away tending to her sick
husband in the hospital, unknown culprits broke into their home. (GT)

PENHA-DE-FRANCE IN RACE FOR NATIONAL AWARD: The village panchayat of
Penha-de-Franca is one of the panchayats in Bardez taluka which is marching
ahead towards progress and development. (NT)

'PUNISH THOSE GUILTY': At a time when countrymen were eagerly awaiting
Indian cricket team to force world leaders Australia to bite the dust on
their own soil at Adelaide, Goans were cursing those villains of 6 April
2001 one-day international fixture, who had only heaped ignominy on the
State through their dark deeds. Incidentally, the ODI was between India and

fifth year in succession on December 20 and 21, by the Rotary Club of Vasco.

RURAL BAZAAR: Rural Bazaar, an exhibition cum sale, aimed at promoting and
marketing of the products made by individual swarozgaris (self-help groups),
was inaugurated at the hands of Urban Development Minister, Mr Digambar
Kamat, at the proposed Ravindra Bhavan Site, Fatorda, Margao, for the first
time. The Bazaar, which has seventy-two stalls exhibiting handicrafts, batik
items, crochets items, bags, confectionaries, sweets, agricultural products,
etc, will conclude on December 21. (NT)

CHATTISGARH BANS COW SLAUGHTER: The BJP government in Chhattisgarh, headed
by Raman Singh, banned cow slaughter in the State and decided to give
respite to the farmers by writing of their soft loans. Singh said besides
banning cow slaughter the government has also decided to set up new
"gaushalas" in the State and strengthen the existing ones as promised in
their election manifesto. (PTI report in GT)

GIANTS' CONVENTION AT COLVA: Giants International will be holding their 29th
convention at Colva from 20 to 21 December. Giants International is an
India-based service organisation founded in 1972. Its acronym is Generosity,

ARUNA'S HAND BEHIND "OBVIOUS": When Irish boy band Westlife's video
 "Obvious" is released in February 2004, most people will not know that
there was an Indian hand in its production. Delhi-native Goaphile film maker
Aruna Har Prasad Jhala, the Indian producer for the video, was instrumental
in choosing Goa as a location for the video. She said, "I started my film
career with a film that was shot in Goa called Sea Wolves". Goa is high on
Jhala's priorities: she plans to open a branch office here once her new home
in Assagao is completed. (GT)

REGE'S EXHIBITION ON INDO-PORTUGUESE FUSION: "Urban Metamorphosis in Margao"
, an exhibition by architect Ashish Rege based on the fusion of Indian and
Portuguese ideas and the subsequent metamorphosis which took place at the
level of the town and traditional precincts, especially the Margao houses,
during the Portuguese era, will be inaugurated by Power Minister, Mr
Digambar Kamat, at Barreto Miranda Hall, Borda-Margao, on December 18. (NT)
