GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 28 Sep 2003 OFFICIALS, PUBLIC CLASH OVER ROAD ACCIDENTS: Officialdom parried criticism over its weak role in curtailing the number of deaths on Goan roads and hit back at the public, reminding them of their contribution to deaths and indiscipline behind the wheel. At an open forum on 'Accidents Scenario', organised jointly by the Rotary Club of Panaji and Goa People's Forum yesterday, the officials present received an earful from various speakers on the rampant corruption, inefficiency, mismanagement, faulty system for issuing driving licences, lack of vision and planning in making the roads motorist-friendly. The Director of Transport, Daulatrao Hawaldar, gracefully admitted that his department may be corrupt, inefficient and lack application of mind, but the society was also responsible for festering corruption. CM DEFENDS 'WHITE PAPER': Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar yesterday stoutly defended the 'white paper' he released on EDC and dismissed charges made by GPCC chief Luizinho Faleiro and Congress spokesman, Jitendra Deshprabhu, that it contained lies. (H) A FILM EVENT: Plans are afoot to build a multiplex centre around the old GMC heritage building and to improve the infrastructure in Panaji as a part of the State government's preparation for hosting the International Film Festival in India in Goa next year. Initially, Goa plans to make use of available infrastructure and not pump in more money for creating new infrastructure. (Umesh Mhambre in NT) PARRIKAR EXHORTS GOANS TO PRODUCE MORE KONKANI FILMS: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, said if fullness is to be achieved it is possible only in the form of art. "We should not rest merely on our past laurels, but work to create more artistes in the future. If we can produce more Konkani films, then we would go on par with the celebrities of the International Film festival," said the Chief Minister. He was addressing the gathering after inaugurating the Konknni Sangeet and Natak Akademi in Panaji yesterday. (NT) UNIFORM CIVIL CODE: Union Law Minister Arun Jaitley has informed Eduardo Faleiro, Rajya Sabha member from Goa, that Uniform Civil Code was not on the agenda of the present government. Referring to the special mention made by Faleiro in the Rajya Sabha, the Union Minister stated that regarding personal laws, the policy of the government was generally to enter into consultations with the religious communities concerned. This pertained to reforms involving their personal laws. The bill proposes to seek assistance from the government for accident victims in terms of medical, employment, reservation of posts, incentives to employees, recruiting victims handicapped due to accidents and various schemes for disabled persons. On Saturday, a bag containing cash of Rs.1.37 lakh and Demand Drafts worth Rs.8.50 lakh, totaling Rs.9.87 lakh, disappeared mysteriously while it was in the process of being delivered at the Margao post office by the postal van.
