Re: [Goanet]Mangloreans Catholics are Goans?

2003-08-30 Thread WILSON SOARES
Hello,
I just like to budge in here as I always wondered, are
Manglorians really Goans. Heard different stories of
there being a huge fire in Goa so some families took
off to Mangalore and settled there etc.etc. Now my
question is, wherever Goans go they will always make
sure they will call themselves say Pakistani Goans,
Bombay Goans, Kuwait Goans etc. did anyone hear
Mangloreans saying that? It does not really matter at
times but I hate to see them fluctuating between Goans
and Mangloreans whenever they choose to. Be proud of
what you are and stay put.
Wilson

[Goanet]Mangloreans Catholics are Goans?

If that is the case, unrelated to Ashley Tellis, are Catholic
Mangloreans to be classified as non-Goans or are they one of the early
Goan Diaspora? There is much evidence that the Roman Catholic community
in Mangalore started with the immigration of six Goan families to that
part of Konkan.]

Would appreciate if Gilbert Lawrence could give me some references for
further research on this topic of the 'six Goan families'. My studies show
that many Goan Hindu families did migrate to Mangalore because of religious
persecution by the Portuguese. But no mention is made of Catholic families
migrating.

To the best of my knowledge the Manglorean Catholics have no Goan origins.
They were converted by Portuguese (and other) evangelists in the Konkan. As
were the 'East Indians' who were locals (Hindus) who were working for The
East India Company at the time they were converted to the Catholic faith.

I could be wrong.
