(GT) SEIZE IFFI DEVELOPMENT FILES, VIGILANCE DEPT URGED: The Nitoll Jinn Trust has asked the Vigilance department to seize all relevant files and investigate into the propriety of estimates and procedures adopted by the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation vis-a-vis the tender issued for construction of festival theatres in Panjim. (H) BOY'S DEATH: NGOS FOR THOROUGH PROBE: Four NGOs have demanded an inquiry into the death of the 10-year-old 'street child' at Margao and that those responsible be brought to book. In a joint press release, the Positive People, Childline-Goa, Children's Rights in Goa and Anyay Rahit Zindai (ARZ) stated that they were mortified to read of the dastardly treatment of the young 10-year-old 'street child' Suresh Durgappa Gollar, who was killed on 31 March after the traffic police stalked him, supposedly to keep him in Apna Ghar, the state-owned home for children. (GT) SHUKLA PROMISES COMPENSATION, DEFENDS COP: South Goa Superintendent of Police, ID Shukla said the death of Suresh Durgappa alias Rocky, Kalia, was tragic and the police would try to compensate his family. Suresh was crushed to death under the wheels of a garbage truck on Tuesday morning while trying to escape the police. (GT) HEMA MALINI TO CANVASS FOR BJP IN GOA: The electioneering of the BJP for the Lok Sabha polls in the State would be formally launched on April 6, which is the Foundation Day of the party. "Two public meetings, one at Azad Maidan, in Panaji, and another at Vasco would be held on April 6, and addressed by Mr Naik and Mr Angle, as well as the chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar," state BJP president, Mr Rajendra Arlekar, informed at press conference, adding that the noted Hindi film actress, Hema Malini, would be present for both the meetings. (H) SPINSTER JUMPS TO DEATH: A 60-year-old spinster from Nirmalanagar in Xeldem-Quepem committed suicide by jumping into the Seraulim canal at Xeldem. The woman, Nirmala Sawant, was mentally unsound and had previously made a futile bid to commit suicide. (H) RAIA SARPANCH ELECTED: Afra Gomes in the new sarpanch of Raia village. In the elections held on Tuesday, Afra was declared elected unopposed. Her candidature was proposed by former sarpanch, Esmeralda Gomes, and seconded by Philipina Gaonkar. (H) NEW LOOK FOR VASCO NEXT YEAR: The year 2005 may see Vasco undergo a drastic change-in terms of aesthetics, hygiene and development-if the current Mormugao Municipal Council chairperson, Milton Barreto, has his way.The plan calls for a complete makeover for the city including changing the face of Baina, installing gardens and green spaces in the city and other beautification projects. Perhaps the most challenging will be the Baina Project. Speaking to Gomantak Times Barreto said, "We plan to spend about Rs.1.5 crore to beautify Baina which is one of the most beautiful-and accessible-beaches in the state. We have drawn up plans to build a promenade, amphiteatre, sun decks and a community centre." With the four-lane road project almost completed by the Border Roads Organisation and the International Cruise Terminal planned in two years, MMC has an easier task at hand. "No other beach in Goa is so close to rail terminus, airport and sea port," he noted. "This city (Vasco) is the gateway to Goa." The French nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is the command ship of Task Force 473, led by Rear Admiral Jacques Mazars, that will participate in Exercise Varuna with the Indian Navy scheduled to start on 9 April.The British warship, "HMS Gloucester", which has been in port since lat week, is part of Task Force 473 and is a vital part of the group's air defense system.
