GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 17 Sep 2003 GOVT CONSTITUTES GEDC: Goa Education Development Corporation has been constituted by the government with the ordinance constituting it being issued by Governor Kidar Nath Sahani on 8 September. The first Education Estate will be set up by this Corporation at Dhargal, in Pernem, on 300 acres of land in close vicinity of the proposed four-lane highway and the Mopa airport. It will develop educational areas selected by the government, promote schemes for preparation of graduates for knowledge-based society, develop educational testing facilities, training materials, e-learning software, promote information technology at all levels, implement scheme for the benefit of students such as financial support, counseling and hold educational conferences and workshops. A CHARGESHEET was filed yesterday against former minister and Congressman from Taleigao, Somnath Zuwarkar, and seven others in connection with the Goa state Co-operative bank scam. (H) The completion of CRUCIAL FORMALITIES pertaining to the proposed Mopa airport have almost come to a standstill with the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation responding in a lukewarm manner to the project. While on one hand the land acquisition process for Mopa airport is underway rapidly, on the other hand the State government is groping in the dark over the future of this project. (GT) GOVT EYES WATERWAYS: The State government has commenced exploring the possibility of introducing inland waterways as an additional and cheaper means of passenger transportation within the state of Goa. An important route on the list is the Panjim-Vasco route while another is Panjim-Sanquelim. The old route from Dona Paula to Harbour has been struck out in view of the inconvenience cause to commuters. (H) YOUTH ARRESTED FOR RAPE: The Maina-Curtorim police have arrested an 18-year-old youth on charges of raping a 17-year-old girl from a village near Margao. (GT) HELD FOR DRUG TRAFFICKING: Police in Margao have arrested Madan Mohan Mohonko (31), a native of Orissa, under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, for possessing three kilogrammes of cannabis worth Rs.1.5 lakh. (GT) TILAMOL RESIDENT COMMITS SUICIDE: Alex Carvalho, a 25-year-old man from Tilamol-Quepem, committed suicide by hanging himself to the rafter of his house on September 16. Carvalho, hailing from the labour class, is believed to have committed suicide due to unemployment. (H) LAWYERS EATING INTO FOUNDATION OF JUDICIARY: The Panjim Bench of the Bombay High Court has observed that it is most unfortunate that the rock bottom of the foundation of the judiciary is being eaten slowly by the white ants like the lawyers against whom their own clients have made serious complaints and who have been finally punished for their misdeeds. This observation was made in the judgement or Ranjit Satardekar (advocate) v/s Rucmini Narvekar and others. In the judgement, the court has taken a very serious view of illegalities committed by lawyers and advocates in general. (H) CONG OPPOSES HOSTING IFFI: The Congress Legislative party yesterday strongly opposed the hosting of the International Film Festival in Goa in December next year and government's willingness for a joint venture for the sky bus project at the cost of the State exchequer, which is in doldrums. A petite church in the South facing Dabolim, a lighthouse on the West and a fresh water spring which provides water to the resident population, are some of the major landmarks. However, most of the islanders, quite adventurous and football loving, generally live in Vasco if not in Cortalim, Siridao and elsewhere. He will receive the award on 23 October at the Mapusa Municipal Hall. Keeping in mind the aim of bringing the Roman script Konkani writers together, he established the Konknni Kendr in 1970. He transliterated Konkani books which were in Roman script into Devnagri. He was successful in persuading Hindus to write Konkani in the Roman script. (GT) SAROJINI NAIDU PRIZE FOR JOAQUIM FERNANDES OF NT: In the highest national award ever received by a Goan journalist, Joaquim Fernandes, a staff reporter for The Navhind Times, has won the 2003 Sarojini Naidu Prize for best reporting on women in panchayati raj. The prize consists of Rs.2 lakh cash and a citation. The prize would be awarded to him at a special function on October 2 in New Delhi. The Hunger Project, which gives the award, said the cash prize of Rs.2 lakh is given to the journalist to "enable him to continue work on this issue".
