Goa will welcome tourists from yet another Central European country with the arrival of 101 Hungarian travel agents today (Jan 18) morning. Aeroviva, Hungary's fourth largest travel company, is flying in its top agents to explore Goa for themselves. Aeroviva's Director of Sales and Marketing, Andras Foldvari said, "It is absolutely vital for these people to see what Goa has to offer. Goa is a relatively unknown destination. It offers a fantastic blend of cultures and can serve as an example for Europe specially places like Yugoslavia where there are ethnic clashes." (WE-GT)
PROTECTING GOA'S CULTURE: The need of the hour is not to raise a battle for the 'survival of Konkani', but to make the language reader-friendly and develop the right kind of mindset for its growth. Saying so, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar inaugurated the 9th Goa Yuva Mahotsav at Savoi-Verem yesterday (Jan 17). Present on the occasion included the president of the Konkani Bhasha Academy Pundalik Naik, working president Pradeep Kakodkar, vice-president Bhiku Bomi Naik, Savoi-Verem sarpanch Snehal Bhonsale and secretary Rajdeep Naik. Parrikar urged the people to be proud as Goans and focus on protecting the state's rich culture and heritage. (WE-GT) 'WORK TO HELP GOAN YOUTH': CM Parrikar yesterday appealed to the Goa Konkani Academi to take the lead in preparing a comprehensive plan for the development of Goan youth. He was speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of the two-day 9th Goa Yuga Mahotsav at Sateribhat, Volvoi. Parrikar said that the enthusiasm and the creative mind shown by the youth during the Mahotsav needs to be tapped and channelised by giving a proper direction to the youth force.He said his government has decided to be selective while inviting investment and that only those investors who are willing to provide employment to the locals would be preferred. (H) 'MARATHI IS TAUGHT IN KONKANI': Speaking at the 25th Gomantak Marathi Sahitya Sammelan, Biku Pai Angle, a staunch Marathi protagonist and educationist, felt that reaching of Marathi in the primary schools has been degraded because teachers teach Marathi in Konkani. Manohar Hirba Sardessai, a former Director or Department of Education, after felicitating Mr Angle, suggested that leading Konkani writers should be invited attend Marathi sammelans which will further help bridge the gap between the two language activists. (H) DAZZLING KITE CARNIVAL: Kites like birds and kites like fish, kites like pastry rolls, teddy bear, dragon-fly and kites like, well, just kites. Colourful kites in all shapes and sizes glided across the Miramar skyline as the second three-day International Goa Kite Carnival got underway at Panaji on January 17 afternoon. A full-day kite-flying on Sunday will culminate with a musical concert where renowned Goan percussionist, Bondo will jam up with other musicians. Mr Ajay Prakash, chief executive of Nomad Travels and Nomad Heritage Trust, the main organizers, said that there were around 18 participants this year from India and abroad. Also present was India's famed Babu Khan from Jaipur, flying 250 kites on a single line. However, things are beginning to change with the sudden pace of activity towards this end. The Mormugao Municipal Council with its own community development society has begun a novel exercise wherein self-help groups of women are being engaged to handle garbage in a scientific manner. (NT) BAHRAIN PM ARRIVES: The Primed Minister of Bahrain, Shaikh Khalifa Bin Salman Al Khalifa, arrived in Goa by special aircraft on a three-day visit to Goa on January 17. The Prime Minister has been accompanied by his ministerial colleagues and senior officials. He is scheduled to leave the State on January 19. "I booze, drink, but I do not drink the blood of the poor people," he said, adding, instead of questioning my business, these elements should ask how the government was spending Rs.9,000 crore paid by his company in the form of taxes. (WE-GT) DOG TAX YET TO FIND FAVOUR: The implementation of the dog tax for domesticated pets in the Capital City seems to be staggering as even after three months, the tax proposal which was introduced with the hope of curbing the increasing stray dog population in Panjim, has very few takers. Only 36 dogs have been registered till date. The tax structure provides for payment of a lifetime dog tax of Rs.100 for a sterilized dog and Rs.1000 for a non-sterilised dog. (H) KASHMIRIS' BID TO BLOCK CALANGUTE BUS SHADE: A handful of boisterous Kashmiri traders held at ransom an official of the Calangute panchayat and its contractor for well over an hour and blocked them from erecting a bus-stop shade in the village. She reportedly picked up a quarrel with her daughter-in-law and in a fit of anger consumed insecticides. (H) POWER PROJECT AT VAGATOR: Minister for Non-Conventional Energy Sources, Dayanand Mandrekar, laid the foundation stone for 5 KW SPV+Wind Hybrid Non-Conventional Energy Project at Vagator on January 16. Estimated at Rs.16.80 lakh, the project, when completed, will illuminate the entire area of tourism department near the Vagator beach.
