GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 21 Sep 2003 WIFE KILLS HUBBY: A housewife allegedly picked up a knife and in a fit of anger allegedly stabbed her alcoholic husband as he was eating his meals at Aquem Alto in Margao on September 20. The husband, Anthony Alex Menino Rodrigues, a 45-year-old mechanic, and his wife Olga, who is a sister of Tourism Minister, Francisco X Pacheco, were residing at Aquem. According to reports, there were regular fights between the couple. The 40-year-old woman has been arrested by the Margao police for allegedly murdering her husband and also for an attempt on the life of her mother-in-law, Anarita. (WE-GT)
BARGE SEIZED: A transhipper "MV Orissa" belonging to a mining company was detained by the Customs authorities at Britona on Friday night, after they intercepted a barge carrying contraband goods worth Rs.20 lakh from the said vessel. The goods were unloaded from the transhipper which had recently returned from a journey to China. These were transferred to a barge "Gloria" and were meant to be unloaded at Sirsaim. (WE-GT) STATE PLANS THREE-DAY MEET: In a bid to up the quality of tourists, both local as well as foreign, Goa will host a three-day Goa Tourism Meet from October 6. Developing backwaters and possibly setting up golf courses, GCCI president Nitin Kunkolienkar said, could be the thrust areas to up Goa's infrastructure and consequently the quality of tourists that visit the State. Goa hosts some 1.5 million tourists annually, and almost three-lakh of these are international tourists. But, the hospitality industry has for years now been lamenting the 'economy class' tourists that have been flocking to this essentially beach-tourism destination. In a letter to the bank president, Mr Jim Wolfensohn, the group urged the World Bank to champion an international convention for the protection of migrants that recently entered into the work force. "The blasting of gelatine kills not only large fish, but small fish as well. The large fish is collected by the killers after the blasts, while the small fish is just killed and abandoned," complained a fisherman.
