GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 24 Aug 2003 HEPATITIS UNDER CONTROL: Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, yesterday claimed the State's health ministry has come to grips with the 'Hepatitis E' outbreak, and pegged the figure of those diagnosed with the disease in public as well as private hospitals at 230. Eleven new cases were reported on Friday-Saturday, Mr Parrikar told journalists at a news conference, adding that as many as 163 of those infected were from Panjim and the balance 67 from elsewhere. The chief minister also said that currently, 66 'Hepatitis E' patients were undergoing treatment, while the balance 164 have already been cured and discharged. Mr Parrikar, while admitting laxity on the part of "someone" in the health department, claimed that the government is now working overtime in tackling the situation. (H)

(WE-GT) ZP PANEL CONFIRMS MISAPPROPRIATION IN CHIMBEL: A committee of the North Goa Zilla Parishad has found substance in the charges of misappropriation of funds pertaining to some Rs 11.56-lakh worth of works carried out in the Chimbel-Merces constituency. The report submitted by the five-member committee at a meeting of the zilla panchayat yesterday, has found payments made for works that had already been carried out by other agencies. The investigation launched by the committee pertained to four works in Chimbel-Merces constituency of the zilla panchayat which is represented by its chairman, Anil Hoble. (H) TRUCK RAMS INTO SHOPS: Two persons were seriously injured and five received minor injuries while three shops and two motorcycles were damaged when a loaded truck rammed into these roadside shops at Kundaim slope yesterday morning. (WE-GT) IFFI TEAM VISITS CAMPAL: Suspense rolls on over the site to be selected in Goa for the International Film Festival of India as the key advisory group of the IFFI now has to choose between one of the three sites shortlisted. Interestingly, Campal which was not included in the previous trip of the IFFI team, was visited and inspected yesterday with keen interest by the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ravi Shankar Prasad and a delegation of prominent personalities from the film industry. The officials visited Velsao and Sinquerim-Aguada before proceeding to Campal. At Campal, the central team visited Kala Academy and was briefed by Chairman of the Academy Pratapsing Rane on the infrastructure and other facilities available there. (H) PARENTS GHERAO ENGINEER: An irate mob comprising of parents and members of PTA from a government primary school gheraoed PWD Assistant Engineer Shastri and ADEI Toraskar over the threat posed to about 400 students studying in an old and dilapidated school building. Instead of it being maintained as historical site today it is being used for parking, establishments have encroached upon it and it is used by labourers to spend the night in disregard to the sanctity of the place. (WE-GT) NON-GOAN COMPANY TAKES 30 LOCALS FOR A JOY RIDE: 30 Goan entrepreneurs have been allegedly taken for a ride, in yet another cheating case by a non-Goan company. The Goan entrepreneurs, some of whom are from Vasco, were lured by high returns in Bobbins or small plastic items manufacturing business. They were ostensibly assured by the company Jai Durga Enterprises of high returns and total buy back of the finished product. They were lured into purchasing machinery costing between Rs 29,000 and Rs 90,000 for various categories of machinery and the company, which had its office in the capital city, also assured to supply them the raw materials at a nominal charge. (H) PROBE INTO MODIFICATION OF HOME SCIENCE QUESTION PAPER: The Goa University h as ordered an inquiry into the modification of the April 2003 Home Science question paper, allegedly carried out by the Principal Daisy John, the report of which will be submitted within a week. The University has also taken a decision to relieve Professor Joe D'Souza of his duties as Head of the Microbiology Department, appointing the Dean of Life Sciences, Professor D J Bhatt, in his stead on an adhoc basis. (H) DOCTORS SUFFERING FROM STRESS: The participants at the seminar on "Lifestyle for Doctors" organised by GK Salelkar Memorial Foundation, expressed concern over the increasing cases of doctors falling prey to the work-related stress. Noted surgeon, Dr GS Kulkarni, delivering the inaugural lecture, said that inspite of high income, many doctors are not happy and are under great mental strain, which in turn leads them towards psychosomatic disorders. (NT) JOB-CUM-TRAINING AVENUES SOON: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has said the government would come out with new schemes in a month's time which would provide employment-cum-training avenues for the unemployed. Underlining the need to recognise dignity of labour, the Chief Minister, however, lamented that traditional occupations tend to be neglected by the younger generation. "This attitude might be due to the very attitude of looking down upon certain areas or on account of lack of training facilities", he said, adding the new schemes would effectively take care of these areas. He pointed out that respect for dignity of labour would take the State to new heights in the march towards economic progress. (H) HELD FOR ASSAULT: The Colva police arrested one Jose Noronha from Per-Seraulim, for causing injury and obstruction. The police said that Ms Reshmi Noronha lodged a complaint alleging that she was obstructed while walking and was threatened by the alleged accused. (NT) SIOLIM FESTIVAL OF PLANTS, FLOWERS: The 12th annual Festival of Plants of Flowers took off with a colourful "kotti fugddi" dance by students at the SFX High School in Siolim. The festival was inaugurated by Dayanand Mandrekar, the Minister for Agriculture, who also released a booklet on the Coconut, this year's theme. The large audience was entertained by a thrilling fancy dress competition of students, who displayed colourful outfits made from various parts of the coconut tree, particularly the leaves. "Coco Delight", the food competition, was a fantastic layout of several tempting coconut dishes. The vast school hall has hundreds of potted plants on display, besides coconut craft items, including those of Vijaydatta Lotlikar. There are selling plants, garden implements, coir items, etc. (GoaNOW) FOUR NABBED FOR ANIMAL SLAUGHTER: Officials of the department of Animal Husbandry and the police swooped down in Maina-Curtorim on Saturday evening and nabbed four persons while in the process of slaughtering animals illegally. While one animal was already found slaughtered and was in the process of being dressed, another was found tied nearby awaiting slaughter. Those nabbed in the raid includes Vinayak Bepari, Jakir Bepari, Inus Bepari and Sattar Bepari. (H) POMP, GAIETY MARK DIVAR BONDERAM: Pomp and gaiety marked the celebration of Divar Bonderam, organised by Piedade Youth Association in Divar on August 23. In the inter-group float contest organised on the occasion, Vittozem bagged the first prize, while Primeiro and Romantic bagged the second and third prizes respectively. In all, six groups participated in the pageantry, but the sixth group did not take part in the contest. Earlier, at the crack of dawn on Saturday, members of Piedade Youth Association went around the village playing the traditional 'Alvorad' to herald the ushering of the annual Bonderam. "Genuine problems and demands, if any, will be addressed and solved, but teachers should not disturb the academic career of the students," Parrikar said.
