[Goanet] The right of Christians in India to prostelize
I agree with Gilbert. There should not be any bans on conversions in India or anywhere. Religion (as Gilbert correctly described with his example of Christianity in France), like any business, is all about spin and marketing. It does not have to be based on facts, but is focused on making the customer feel good. Whether Jesus was god, human, illegitmate, married etc does not matter. The fact is that the Christian church has been able to maintain a large base of very happy customers over the millenia. In fact the church has been so successful, there are so many versions of it today, each with its own brand of christianity and Jesus Christ. The catholic church for its part, is fundamentally a very successful 2000 year old business, and is a testament to the vision of its founder father (no pun intended) and its CEOs that followed Jesus. Amen. The Govt's banning of the rights of Christians in India to prostelize is equivalent to it restricting the rights of private enterprises to function in a free market economy. Such polices may be acceptable in theorcratic states such as Iran, Israel or Saudi Arabia, but we cannot accept it in a secular India. However, even secular America is not immune to the government stacking the deck, as evidenced by President Bush's Faith Based Initiatives, where around 90% of its funding has been utilized on christian organizations in America. Still, this does not compare to the bans being considered by the Indian government. Marlon --- Gilbert Lawrence [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: PS: On a related point. [Goanet] I'm back!!!
Hi Cornel, I have not seen the movie Da Vinci Code and I do not plan to do so. I have seen several programs on the two books on my favorite TV station - the History Channel. Today I saw something on the Travel channel - in Southern France, UK or Mid East. As a student of History and travel, I love to learn something new. Yet something hyped like the Da Vinci Story (at least from the TV series on the novel) turns me off. So right now, I am only amazed by all this hullabaloo about this fictional account, which the authors of both books admit at the outset as being fictional. Another fact that humors me is that we ignore the Bible written by known authors - the apostles' account. Yet we add much weight to the Judas Gospel and other documents where we do not know who was the author and when was it written. Obviously a few hundred years after Christ there was much differences in Jesus' Followers with different geographical areas / sects of the following having different interpretations. I guess this depended on the archbishop and his bias. The last TV program said that the concept of Jesus being married and having a wife (believed by the Egyptian sect called the Gnostic), mirrored the Egyptian view of god Osiris and his wife Isis. So it would appear that this Egyptian sect tried to make Jesus acceptable to the local population by portraying Jesus in a manner of the known entity - the Egyptian God Osiris. Perhaps as a reincarnation Osiris? This is not different from Paul presenting Jesus' teaching as an evolution of Jewish faith as Paul's main audience were, like him, Jews scattered across Greco-Roman territories in Asia Minor, Greece and Italy. And this is no different in the way Europeans view Jesus as a white person and African's view him as black. We all know in the Middle Ages, and perhaps even now, the common way churches raised funds and built bigger churches was by having local saints, relics, pilgrimages, and creating other exciting stories like their church has the Holy Grail. That was the likely start of the story of the discovered documents started by the priest in Southern France in the late 1500's. He found the Templar documents in the little chapel that was crumbling. Neat way to get people to come to France and his church to make offerings. The French word Sangraal first appeared in a poem in France in the Middle Ages. This is 1200 years after Christ. Kind Regards, GL PS: On a related point. You are for availability of the book Da Vinci Code in India (which I agree). But you are for banning the distribution of the Bible (evangelization) in India. RE: [Goanet] TIMOR LESTE
Fred, I agree with the opinion of Damien Kingsbury. Unmet expectations: You see this in a lot of postcolonial countries, Damien Kingsbury, an Australian academic and expert on Indonesia and East Timor. Lots of people believe once their colonial masters are gone everything will get better. Well, often that isn't the case. You see, the problem in East Timor is lack of an Administrative Machine good enough to carry out the work planned by the government. The truth is that there is no Administrative infrastructure in East Timor yet. The country is only 4 years old. It has got a legitimate democratically elected government but lacks the remaining necessary administrative infrastructure to rebuild it. There are not enough engineers, not enough architects, not enough doctors. People's expectations are huge, but the government is unable to deliver because there is no infrastructure. The Australian PM and the wife of the President Xanana Gusmao blame the government and say that the ET Government is bad. I personally think that the government is doing what they can however they cannot do it on their own. What can a government do without a proper administrative infrastructure? Of course the solution for the problem is a longer co-operation between ET and the west. It is obvious that they need help and they are not getting enough. And now, to answer your tricky question Fred, I believe that it is more likely that they have learned their violence from the more recent colonial power of Indonesia than with the former Portuguese colonial power... And also a small comment about Martinho's email: Dear Martinho, this is no return of favour from the Australian. Don't even think about that. If Australia did not have any profit in the oil of East Timor, they would have not got involved so strongly as they currently are. Trust me, if it was not for the oil of East Timor (whose main beneficiary is Australia), the East Timorese would have been left completely alone to fall into civil war. Let us not have any illusions about this. Return of favour, yeah, right. East Timor saved by the oil of East Timor Gap. Nothing else! [Goanet] 5th of October
Gabe, Pardon me if I got this wrong but did you on Goanet, several weeks ago, refer to a shop called 5th of October in Margao which sold Portuguese wines in the 1950s? Well, as a youngster, I did know that shop. I think it was call Cinq de Otubro (in my poor Portuguese) but I clearly recall that, the 'manager' of the shop was Caetano Francisco (Rodrigues?), from Colva. I remember that he was an absolute dandy, wearing really smart linen suits despite the heat, beautiful shoes and he always had a cane and hat when going to and from the shop. I also recall him selling to my dad, supposedly the best red and white Portuguese wine in stock. This I did imbibe in at every opportunity when there were guests at home. Sadly, I can't recall whether white was better than red, as consumption on my part, was obviously done clandestinely and always in a great hurry. But I do remember very clearly, the ambience of that charming specialist shop, its exact location and the ancient buses running past it on a dusty red road. HISTORY HOUR XAVIER CENTRE OF HISTORICAL RESEARCH Cordially invites you to a documentary film In Search of Abbe Faria: The Hypnotic Vision of a Goan Pioneer at XAVIER CENTRE OF HISTORICAL RESEARCH B.B. Borkar Road Alto Porvorim Thursday, 1st June 2006 5.30 pm Tel: 2417772 ; 2414971 This documentary film was put together by Isabel S.R. Vas and Cecil Pinto to pay tribute to a great Goan. The year 2006 marks the 250th birth anniversary of Jose Custodio Faria, a remarkable son of Goa who is widely regarded as the Father of Hypnotism. The documentary introduces the viewer to some of the history and achievements of the Abbe. It is the fruit of a fascinating, if at times frustrating, search. Researchers and enthusiasts, documents and monuments have found place on this road map. Isabel and Cecil hope it will beckon other creative minds to further celebrate the pioneering hypnotist. The screening of this documentary film will be preceded by a brief talk titled Do we remember the Goan diaspora? by Dr. Celsa Pinto, Director of Education, Government of Goa; noted historian, researcher and author. _ Do not post admin requests to the list. [Goanet] The Da Costa Code
The Da Costa Code Review of a controversial Goan book By Cecil Pinto Disclaimer: The column below is a work of pure fiction. Children, religious fundamentalists, and the belligerent South Goa Tourist Taxi Drivers should not read this column, as their myopic minds cannot see beyond the ends of their noses. If a humour column can change your faith, then you are immature and did not have a strong faith anyway. This week we review the book The Da Costa Code by Cecil 'Damn Brown' Pinto. This controversial new book has as its central character, a researcher, and historical erotica writer, Jose Lourenco. Awakened in the dead of the night by a cryptic SMS, Jose starts his rusting Ind-Suzuki motorcycle and comes to the old Secretariat in Panjim to find the dead body of an elderly male British charter tourist. Initially Jose thinks the tourist might have died of sheer boredom, as there's not much night life in Panjim, and that day just happened to be a Dry Day. On closer observation, he finds the odd positioning of the body, and the strange cymbals around it, suggest that the tourist might have been an epileptic percussionist. About to head back home Jose bumps into Sophie, the buxom niece of the dead tourist who was heading south searching for a rave party. Sophie is a gifted cryptologist but doesn't have a clue about the difference between Progressive Trance and Goa House, and like most females is geographically challenged. Together Jose and Sophie try making sense of the elusive clues left around by her uncle. From a priceless painting by Francis Newton Souza to Subodh Kerkar's re-installation at Campal, they stumble across secret societies, pseudo-celebrity society parties, comatose drunks and stray dogs killed by speeding vehicles. What was the secret that Sophie's uncle died guarding? Do elderly British charter tourists come here to die, or to have their teeth and eyes seen to as the rates are much cheaper? Will the ancient truth be lost forever? Will Jose get to score with Sophie before the night is over? What exactly does a cryptologist do? Study graveyards? In putting together a preposterous tale of intrigue and historical inaccuracies the author has managed to raise questions best left unasked. Was there really an underground passage connecting the Adil Shahi Palace with the harem that now houses the Accounts Department? What is the symbolism of cucumbers and spoons at the Telaulim feast? Why is nobody investigating the Art College Rape that never was? Will mud houses last longer than RCC structures? Why is the Government ignoring the 250th Birth Anniversary of the great Goan Abbe Faria, the Father of Hypnotism? Why are there no bars in Warkhand village in Pernem? Are there really tunnels under the Pomburpa church leading to the river? Is the statue of the deity at the Paroda temple really carved out of a meteorite? While traversing talukas on his sputtering Ind-Suzuki motorcycle, in search of the answers to these bewildering questions, Jose and Sophie realise that everything leads to the Goan Holy Grail of 'laavnecho' caju. This is the purest form of Caju Feni, where during the distillation process no metal is used. Even the pipe leading from one tank to another is made of clay. The laavnecho caju is supposed to have mythic qualities as a medicine, and an aphrodisiac, and was much sought after by Sir Richard Burton of Kama Sutra fame. Legend has it that only one woman in Siolim still makes laavnecho Caju in the proper way. Back to the questions that lead to Goa's Holy Grail. Why was Santa Monica Convent connected to the St. Augustine Monastery by a secret tunnel? Was Dayanand Bandodkar fairer than others? How come the term Saraswat Brahmin came into use only recently? Why was Father Eusebio murdered? Were crocodiles introduced into the Mandovi River by the Adil Shah as a defense, or to stop slaves from escaping? Why don't they make Caju Feni in Brazil where the caju plant originates? Are there really mass graves around Old Goa, of the thousands of Muslims massacred by Afonso de Albuquerque in November of 1510? Why is the number of layers in a traditional bebinca exactly the same as the number of 'pod-de' in a traditional tiatr? Who sculpted the erotic figures at the base of the temple in Toldem, Sanguem? Interestingly the author, Cecil Pinto, claims that he was not inspired by the infamous book The Da Vinci Code and only named it The Da Costa Code to placate his wife (originally a Da Costa) to stop nagging him for while. She feels he should concentrate on making a proper living instead of spending precious time writing humour columns and searching for the perfect Caju Feni. Disclaimer: In retrospect the column above is a work of impure fiction. Calling it 'pure' fiction would be an insult to great literature and writers. Those who found the column above detrimental to the profession of their faith are requested to burn copies of

[Goanet] Mixed response to 'The Da Vinci Code'
Mixed response to 'The Da Vinci Code' Indo-Asian News Service New Delhi, May 26 (IANS) After days of will it, won't it, The Da Vinci Code finally opened here Friday but to a mixed response, with some cinemas reporting a phenomenal response while others saying it was getting off to a slow start. While tickets were there for the asking in the MMX cineplex in Noida on the outskirts of the city, in south Delhi's PVR Saket, for instance, you can't get to see the movie till Monday - except for the eager beaver moviegoer who queued up outside the window first thing in the morning. Sourav Verma, vice president of PVR cinemas that runs a chain of multiplexes across the city as well as in Gurgaon and Noida, said the response was overwhelming. We opened out booking counter Thursday evening and the response is phenomenal. People are going for advance booking even for the next two days, Verma told IANS. It was a different story across town. We sold only 18 tickets for our first show of the day and there are not many advance bookings. The hall has a seating capacity of 269, said a ticket seller at MMX theatre, Noida. We are not sure about the future of the film. Something can only be said after a week, he added about the Tom Hanks starrer based on the bestseller by Dan Brown. Officials in west Delhi's Fun Cinema said response to the movie was not that great with just over 20 percent booking for the first show. In a 312 capacity hall, only 64 tickets have been sold for the first show. We are running five shows a day of 'The Da Vinci Code' and hope that it will attract more audience in the next shows, said Shailendra, deputy manager at Fun cinema's box office. Shipra Jam multiplex in the satellite town of Ghaziabad had recorded 40 percent sales. We have sold 40 percent of our capacity for the first show and tickets are available for our next shows, said Sunil Anand, marketing head of the multiplex. The film, which promotes the theory that Jesus married Mary Magdalene and started a bloodline, evoked a furore amongst a section of Christian leaders who demanded that it be banned. Following this, Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi had put its release on hold, even though the Censor Board had cleared it. It was earlier scheduled for release May 19. India is the only country in the world where the film is being released with a disclaimer at the beginning and at the end. The Ron Howard movie has opened to a worldwide weekend box office taking of $224 million, making it the second biggest worldwide opening for any film, a statement from the distributors Sony said. Star Wars Episode III opened to $253 million globally one year ago. The Da Vinci Code opened on 12,000 screens internationally, the statement said. -- -- Frederick 'FN' Noronha | Yahoomessenger: fredericknoronha http://fn.goa-india.org | [EMAIL PROTECTED] Independent Journalist | +91(832)2409490 Cell 9822122436 -- Photographs from Goa: http://www.flickr.com/photos/fn-goa/popular-views/ _ Do not post admin requests to the list. [Goanet] TIMOR LESTE
Hi Martinho, Here's another perspective on what's happening in another former Portuguese colony. Without intending to bait our Lusostalgic friends, could one ask whether there was something specific about Portuguese colonialism that left behind strongly polarised, violent, almost-futureless societies when compared to others (apart from French colonialism too, to a degree ... where we also saw violent implosions like the Portuguese case?). FN http://www.forbes.com/work/feeds/ap/2006/05/26/ap2776496.html From: Anthony and Nolette de Souza Subject: TIMOR LESTE It's no big deal that Australia has sent troops to reestablish order in Timor Leste for, during the Second World War, the Timorese saved hundreds or Aussies fighting the Japanese. Australia is merely returning the favour. A small contingent of camouflage-clad U.S. Marines landed in Dili to protect the American Embassy, and Indonesia closed its land border with East Timor as the spiraling conflict drew in police, machete-wielding youths and residents frustrated by poverty and unemployment. In a sign of the depth of hatred dividing the Indian Ocean nation, a mob torched the house of a government minister, killing five children and an adult whose charred bodies were found Friday. The bloodshed that started after the March firing of 600 disgruntled soldiers - nearly half the 1,400-member army - is the most serious crisis East Timor has faced since it broke from Indonesian rule in 1999. The impoverished nation received millions of dollars in international aid over the last seven years, much of it focused on building up the military. After staging deadly riots last month, the sacked troops fled the seaside capital, set up positions in the surrounding hills and threatened guerrilla war if they were not reinstated. Sporadic gunfire and explosions, some near the presidential compound, were heard throughout the day Friday in Dili and from rebel positions on city outskirts. The clashes killed a civilian and a soldier, said Antonio Caleres, director of Dili's main hospital, bringing the death toll to 23 in the past four days. Machete-wielding youths were seen stopping a bus outside the capital Friday, asking passengers where they were from before letting them go. On Thursday, a crowd stormed a Dili neighborhood, where they smashed windows and used gasoline to burn houses, including the residence of Home Affairs Minister Rogerio Lobato. Lobato was not inside but six of his relatives were killed, including two young children and three teenagers, Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri said. I ran away when I saw them coming, neighbor Victor Do Dantos, 20, said of the attackers, declining to speculate on who they were. It was unclear whether the minister's home was deliberately targeted. Hundreds of heavily armed Australian troops patrolled the streets on foot or in armored personnel carriers Friday, backed up by Black Hawk helicopters. More Australians are expected to arrive in the coming days for a total 1,300. New Zealand, Malaysia and Portugal - East Timor's former colonial power - have pledged or sent smaller numbers of troops. Thousands of people have abandoned their homes, many seeking refuge inside the United Nations compound in Dili. I'm afraid and saddened. Australian troops are arriving here because we cannot solve own problems, said Julio Dos Reis, a 34-year-old prison guard standing by a roadside with his 2-year-old daughter. Our leaders don't have the ability to resolve this. East Timor's government asked for international help this week, but tensions grew Thursday when army soldiers attacked the national police headquarters, accusing officers of allying themselves with the renegade former troops. U.N. police and military advisers negotiated a cease-fire under which police were to surrender weapons and leave the building. As unarmed police were escorted out, soldiers opened fire. An injured policewoman screamed for help as U.N. officers and ambulances arrived at a street strewn with bodies and wounded in blood-soaked uniforms. At least 10 people were killed and 26 wounded, including two U.N. advisers, said U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric and a hospital director. The renegade soldiers were
